Original Māori carving inspired by the hōkioi (NZ haast eagle), an extinct bird known as the largest eagle to ever roam the land. There are many terrifying stories handed down by Māori about this bird. The hōkio's main prey was the also extinct moa bird, once NZ's largest flightless bird (up to 3m tall). Swamp kauri with whale bone eyes. Maori carving at Art by the Sea Gallery.
