Māori wood carving showing the head of a hōkioi (NZ haast eagle) in swamp kauri with (gifted) whale bone eyes and a steel stand. The hōkioi is an extinct NZ native bird, the largest eagle to ever roam the land. There are many terrifying stories handed down by Māori about this bird. The hōkio's main prey was the also extinct moa bird, once NZ's largest flightless bird (up to 3m tall). Contemporary maori art at Art by the Sea Gallery.
