Read the story of Art by the Sea and take a virtual walk through our Auckland art gallery. We exhibit fine and affordable original art and limited edition prints by NZ artists. Find Auckland art museums in New Zealand. About Us Making connections through art Kia Ora Koutou e nga Manuhiri. Nau mai, haere mai, haere mai. Hello and welcome to our gallery of established and emerging artists from Aotearoa New Zealand. Art by the Sea virtual tour Today, Art by the Sea stands as a respected Auckland art gallery showcasing a wide variety of fine and affordable original art and limited edition prints from across Aotearoa New Zealand. We are proud to have a sister gallery, Art by the River , in Whanganui. Art by the Sea is a business but it is also a communal space that draws in residents and travellers alike seeking a little time-out and inspiration away from the chaos of today. We are kaitiaki (guardians) of this space. And this space provides manaakitanga (respect, support, and hospitality) to all who visit it. Hei kona mai. We look forward to welcoming you into our gallery. Linda and Mike Geers Our Story Art by the Sea was established in 1991 in the historic Duders building on the waterfront of the seaside suburb, Devonport to showcase New Zealand art and artists. We would like to acknowledge the hard mahi of Bronwyn Davies who ran the Devonport art gallery for its first ten years in business and established its integral connection with the Devonport community. The current owners, Mike and Linda Geers, purchased the business in 2001 and built it up to the reputable Auckland art gallery it is today. Following the move to Takapuna in 2021, Art by the Sea has established strong ties to the Takapuna and Milford communities. We are honoured by the support and welcome we have received. We could (and may!) write a book with the stories that have travelled through or begun at Art by the Sea. There have been floods (in 2001 and during the infamous Auckland Floods 2023). There was the drunk driver who crashed their car through the front window. There have been practical jokes, such as the time we placed a giant sandstone kina on the beach by the ferry on April Fools’ Day, or a few years later when we precariously climbed the Edwards Parade clock tower to balance presents on top at Christmas. And there have been incredible community events—charity fundraisers for Amnesty International, War Child, the Key to Life Trust. On these nights, the gallery came alive as we witnessed poets and artists joining together in creative expression about human rights, children affected by war and conflict, and mental health awareness. The stories will continue...

Ngahiwi Walker Māori Pou Wood Carver Ngāti Porou, East Coast (Tai Rāwhiti) Ngahiwi Walker is a Māori wood carver from Te Araroa (Gisbourne Region), now based in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. His iwi (tribe) are Ngāti Porou in Tai Rāwhiti (the East Coast) of Aotearoa New Zealand’s Te Ika-a-Māui (North Island). Originally from Te Araroa in the Gisbourne Region, Ngahiwi is now based in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. Ngahiwi works mostly with macrocarpa and occasionally NZ tōtara. He hand-carves each piece, creating a charcoal effect with a blow torch and finishing with a bristled brush. Every pou tells a story in the Māori wood carving and the moko (tattoo), some tales and memories passed down by elders, others speaking to the mana (spiritual energy/standing) of men and women and their position within the iwi (tribe) and hapu (community). Ngahiwi began carving in 2003 to help someone he knew who had undergone a traumatic experience. He wanted to do something for them so he carved a pou. The family was taken away by it and very grateful. My first carvings were gifts for family members whose lives had been affected in some way by death or birth. Since then, I have been carving stories that I remember from way back. Ngahiwi’s contemporary Māori art is in high demand, often carved on commission. Pieces that do come into the gallery are gratefully received as they contribute much to the wairua (spirit) of our space but they are rarely with us long.

He works in cast bronze and hand-crafted ceramic, and has taught many classes and workshops on these mediums. I have been enthralled in the act of creation for many years now . . . [My bronze sculptures] have a textural quality that is so much a part of working with cast metals, and they show the physicality that is required to produce a finished work . . . they challenge the viewer to look, contemplate, and bring their own aesthetic sense of form and texture to the work. Bill’s earlier weird and wonderful New Zealand contemporary art featured chevron shapes in many forms, interactive wall pieces with travelling marbles, and alien or underwater imaginary creatures with spines and pods. Today, his vessels and wall plaques depict NZ seascapes and landscapes with diving gannets, soaring tūī, and swimming hammerhead sharks. His large bronze ocean scenes with historic sailing ships and waka have appeared in exhibitions and prompted several commissions. Some of Bill’s commissions include: a giant “Pelagic Chevron” public sculpture at the corner of Tangihua Street and Quay Street in Auckland City; a large, bronze interpretation of Captain Cook’s sextant; a bronze entranceway for the Wairakia Golf Course; a copper and ceramic fountain for the entrance to the Lake House Art Centre; bronze plaques for the Sir Edmund Hillary Ice Axe memorabilia case; and a sculpture of renowned art benefactor Lady Becroft’s hands.

Brendan Adams 2023 30th Anniversary Group Show 2022 Bio I trained as a painter but it was colour and all the possibilities of form and texture that attracted me to ceramics, and I am still stuck in the mud! One of the great things about clay is that there never seems to be an end to what you can do with it. As someone who likes to muck around with lots of ideas, clay has been the perfect partner in crime. I really do feel I have only just started. Brendan Adams is a pottery artist and ceramic designer who has amassed a large following of clientele drawn to his creative and highly innovative sculpture and ceramic wall art (NZ). He is known for his brightly coloured slipcast ceramics, originally using Crown Lynn clay. More recently, his contemporary abstract and figurative designs have seen him include other materials such as steel, brass, aluminium, and wood. While many of his pieces are decorative, some also serve a function, as we see in his ceramic art bird feeders, candle holders, smartphone speakers, and working radios. Brendan has been making a living from clay since 1987. He and his wife Kathryn set up a ceramic shop selling affordable original art in Kingsland, which they ran for ten years. In 2013, they opened Front Room Gallery where they exhibited their own work and featured other New Zealand potters. Together, they now run Brendan Adams Designs from their home studio in Auckland. Brendan has a diploma in Fine Arts from Otago Polytechnic, where he majored in painting. He has taught at Auckland's Unitec and the Auckland Studio Potter Society (Auckland Potters). His work has been exhibited throughout the country in major competitions and exhibitions where he has won several awards, and is represented in the Auckland Museum, James Wallace Trust, and regional collections. Brendan’s domestic ware is well recognised for its pacific colours, easy kiwi attitude, and inventiveness. See inside Brendan's studio >

Similar to dot painting or pointillism, Tallulah’s multi-layered mark making art presents imaginative gardens and vibrant spaces, showing us new details every time we look at them. Gazing at one painting, we might find purple seedpods, cherry blossom trees, NZ harakeke (flax), rising sunflowers, or a Van Gogh-like starry night. Another might show us floating icebergs and circling moons, while yet another offers a coconut tree before a rioting desert horizon. This is New Zealand landscape art that defies landscape conventions. I would describe my working style as expressionist maximalism/surrealism. I create work that is extravagantly detailed, inclusive, eclectic and often unashamedly beautiful. In the moment of painting, Tallulah is dedicated to her craft. Her work is intuitive and spontaneous, each piece growing from one corner to spread across the canvas or board. Inspiration comes from her own experiences, news gathered during her walks, and snippets from everyday life. Tallulah rarely involves reference images; instead, she transposes the psychological complexity of her interior world into lush and layered compositions. Her paintings might tell us something about the human condition, or about our place in the madness of contemporary life. I’m interested in movement and rhythm. I want to create works that vibrate. I set about doing this by juxtaposing unlikely colours, and the repetitive use of patterns and marks. I embrace the pleasure of process for its own sake, inviting the viewer to engage with the mark-making and to follow the myriad paths into the work to discover their own interpretation of how and what they see. There is a strongly recognisable yet ever-transient voice in Tallulah’s abstract landscape art. Natural motifs and patterned elements recur throughout: snake-like trees, floating moons, distorted reflections in bodies of water, and stippled night skies. Abstract and representational impulses co-exist in unorthodox harmony. There is a nuanced vulnerability to her work, an emotional charge or sensitivity, and intricate detail that is at once controlled, expressive, and experimental. I need to create intently, slowly and methodically. But also randomly, unplanned and irrationally. It’s as though several parts of me take turns creating, each part taking control when needed. To be loose and free, rigid and meticulous, considered and analysing or playful and experimental. Tallulah’s expressive art paintings of NZ are held in a number of private collections. She has been a finalist in the prestigious Parkin Drawing Award, the Miles Art Award, the Tasman Art Award, and the Cleveland Art Award.

His long exposure and movement fine art photography capture the emotional atmosphere of landscapes, as experienced in the moment. There is poetry in Michel’s expression of art, a language that he is also beginning to express in words. A moment in indecisive movement. In between the chaos of tones and shades, an invisible flare forms from a different time and space. A moment of true stillness as the light bounces and is emblazoned across the movement. Maybe we should just ignore all that we have become accustomed to, blinded by an obvious life, stubbornly try to understand. The incandescence that is expressed through the soul of one’s self does not need to make sense. Michel Perrin was born in 1972 in Annemass, France. He spent his childhood there, close to the Swiss border. His deep interest and fascination with photography was cultivated during his teenage years. As a young man, this passion was further developed when he moved to New Zealand and was struck by the abundance of natural and wild beauty this and has to offer. The tones that resonate like a cacophony of emotions in constant motion, I narrate with shades and colours the time that passes. Reminds me of the lingering movement of a light that escapes time, a bright swirling vortex, the elements fighting each other in perfect harmony. As a professional photographer working in the commercial sector, Michel’s work has been featured in numerous NZ magazines. He has worked with a diverse range of New Zealand companies showcasing their company profiles and products. He entered the NZIPP Iris photographic competition for the first time in 2007, entering a mixture of landscape photography and portraiture. All eight of his submissions were placed and he received three silver and five bronze places. Michel’s photographic art is held in private collections across the country and he continues to work professionally as a portrait photographer.

In his pop art, Christian has the unique ability to capture memory in a way that is both nostalgic and joyful. His style is at times subtle, comical, and personal, compared with other pop art that may be more cliched or appropriative. Meanwhile, his landscape paintings evoke feelings of joy and freedom, celebrating Aotearoa New Zealand's incredible surfing beaches. Speaking to his love of the great outdoors, Christian’s surfing and contemporary beach painting comes from his own experiences exploring Aotearoa’s coast lines in the North and South Islands. His abstract modern art paintings and sculptures are inspired by his childhood memories, film and music media of different decades, and festivals and famous people from the past. Christian's artwork touches the nostalgia nerve within a wide variety of ages, inviting us to remember the golden years in all their glory. I like to be creative in as many ways as possible. Whatever it is to get across my idea and explore what I am doing. I make sculptures. I do large installations in the landscape. I use photography, paint, screen printing, have a rock band, I make videos and film. This is the way I want to continue. I pride myself in doing different things. Christian has a diploma in design (Visual Communications) from Unitec in Auckland. He worked as a designer directing ads, magazines, and logos for several years before leaving that work to follow his dream and become a full-time artist. For a conceptual artwork, Christian begins with idea and composition. He then searches for hours for the type of images that will support this composition. Mostly they are a mix of images taken from online and his own drawings. He then uses a coarse screen (like the old fashioned newspaper screen of 60 dots per inch) to transpose the image over his painting technique. This process is reminiscent of comic book artworks from the 60's and 70's. Actual painting starts in the beginning and is applied throughout the entire process. The final piece of pop art contains layers upon layers of painting, design, and screen printing, often with some oil pastel stick as the final layer. Christian continues to be remembered for some of his more daring artistic endeavours. This includes his “Toetoe” installation series placed in several iconic Auckland locations, including in Auckland City Harbour (with the tide coming in!). Today, alongside his contemporary art followers, collectors, and investors, Christian has a small fanbase as a result of his feature film, This Papier Mache Boulder is Actually Really Heavy (2016), for which he won a number of international film festival awards. Christian has been represented by Art by the Sea Gallery since 2006. He is a prolific artist and has had many, highly successful exhibitions in our gallery. He has also appeared in public exhibitions and sculpture symposiums across the country. Christian has produced art on commission and continues to be available for such work. His work is held in many private collections, including the Wallace Trust which has over 40 of his pieces. Art for me is a passion. Sometimes pure instinct, sometimes quite structured, but usually it’s a fairly organic process. It makes me feel good to express myself. And it’s great to be able to share that with others. Thank you for the love. See inside Christian's studio >

His figurative work ranges from vibrant paintings of women in circus and steampunk dress to sunny beach and garden scenes to softly painted nudes. He has won awards for his fine art portrait painting and been commissioned by a number of well-known organisations. Of his circus paintings, Paul said: These paintings reflect our two worlds, the exterior and interior, the seen and unseen. The effects of our surroundings on our inner essence. Paul is drawn by the inherent strength he finds in people while quietly observing their face and form. He favours a loose brush style with the work evolving on the canvas as he paints, and as he deepens his understanding of the subject. Character imperfections appeal to him and he balances his attempts to capture the essence of poses in the human figure with an interest in the life experienced by the individual person. Paul paints intuitively, through perception, and only uses photographs as a reference tool. Influenced by the American artist Alex Kanevsky, Paul’s figurative work is often given movement and atmosphere through his use of abstract backgrounds. Paul also paints the occasional captivating New Zealand landscape and still life. His interest in landscapes focuses on the extended vistas and rolling hills of the North Island, capturing the NZ summer with a finely tuned sense of light and atmosphere. His intimate still life renditions exploit the contrasting qualities of surface and light reflection, their detail and composition speaking to his senior experience in the craft. Paul has enjoyed a career as an exhibiting painter, professional illustrator and tertiary lecturer in Auckland for more than forty years. In the seventies and early eighties he had an extensive career in illustration, working in several of the top Auckland advertising agencies. He tutored part-time at a number of tertiary institutions, including Whitecliff College of Art, for over twenty years. He has said that teaching life drawing, fashion, and figure studies encouraged him to constantly perfect his own technique. Paul has completed a variety of significant private commissions including oil portraits of all of the America's Cup Skippers, and a series of three portraits for Kings College in Auckland. He has been a finalist in the Adam Portraiture Awards no fewer than six times and, in 2004, he was commissioned to design and illustrate six stamps and two first day cover motifs for the Christmas Stamps for NZ Post. Now retired from teaching, Paul is painting full time. His portrait art painting is collected both nationally and internationally.
