I don’t use photographs; everything’s based on what I’ve seen. Lindsay Crooks was an iconic fine artist based in Brighton, Dunedin. He was known for his bright, colourful paintings of happy beach scenes (NZ) and people enjoying typical New Zealand outdoor activities like surfing, fishing, and gardening. Around Dunedin and nationally, Lindsay was known as an ‘artist of the people.’ The following are excerpts taken from poet David Eggleton’s introduction to the book Venus on a Beach Towel (Longacre Press, 2003) about Lindsay and his art: A teacher of life drawing for twenty years, Lindsay Crooks' main subject as an artist is the human figure. His people are buoyant, jolly, life-affirming figures - their chunky body shapes worked into careful compositions which celebrate ordinary things, ordinary pleasures and the everyday world. Lindsay Crooks paints life as a kind of incessant activity. His paintings are full of movement. Figures walk with a rolling sailor's gait, or they dance, flex, stride, saunter, or they hurtle along on bicycles, dive down to seabeds and engage in frenetic beach activities… He explores the human comedy of domestic life and invests the small objects of daily life with both simple magic and comic dignity… He notices things: steam from a kettle, a cat curled up, a vase of flowers, the way snow fluoresces, the ocean view through an open door. Perhaps the primal site for Crook's studies of the figure is the beachscape… In a typical beach painting […] we will see children running towards the water, which will be alive with surfers and swimmers. Family groups will be picnicking. Teenagers gambol and frolic. The figures are solid, anchored, grounded. They grow out of the spaces they inhabit, indeed, they may be almost submerged in their surroundings: semi-transparent, camouflaged. And there is, as always, the signature knack for balanced colours and shapes—of sand tones and sea tones, of boardriders and sandsitters. Things happen in a blaze of light. Lindsay sadly passed away in 2005 after an 8-month battle with cancer. He is sorely missed. Lindsay was represented by Art by the Sea Gallery for over five years and we developed a close relationship with him. We have a list of Lindsay’s works that have come from personal art collections and that we are selling on behalf of our clients. These include signed original pastels, smaller framed original oils, and art prints on canvas and paper. A percentage of all profits will be returned to the beneficiaries of Lindsay's estate. She works either in phosphor bronze or cast bronze using the lost wax method. The phosphor bronze technique is a unique art form only known by a few. In this method, Lucy welds strips of bronze together, building the piece up from one side to the other to create one-off pieces. Lucy creates ecological art or protest art (artivism) concerned with environmental issues, particularly climate change (as we see in her travelling polar bears). While her subject matter is global and political, Lucy's work remains fervently empathetic in its creation and intent. Lucy graduated with a BA (Hons) degree from Bath Academy of Art, UK (1987), and settled in New Zealand in 1998. Her work has appeared in solo exhibitions and collective shows such as Sculpture on the Gulf Waiheke Island and Sculpture On the Shore Auckland. In 2009, Lucy won the Peoples’ Choice Award for a meercat piece entitled ‘Special forces on patrol.’ Lucy was selected as a finalist for the Small Sculpture Art exhibition at Waiheke Island Gallery in 2013. She also won The McConnell Family Supreme Award for Big Man at Sculpture in the Gardens 2011/12 and has work displayed at Brick Bay Vineyard Matakana and Auckland Botanical Gardens. The Big Man sculpture of a polar bear in a hoody (life-size, one-off bronze) is now on permanent public display outside Lower Hutt City Hospital.

The exhibition was sponsored by Milford Shopping Centre and curated by Art by the Sea. Free guided tours of the trail were offered by Art by the Sea staff in small groups every 15 minutes for the duration of the show. Pōwhiri The event opened with a pōwhiri hosted by artist Ngahiwi Walker (Ngāti Porou). He acknowledged the kaupapa of the event: to fundraise and raise awareness for the I Am Hope foundation. Pou by Ngahiwi Walker (left) Walker's five pou show a kaumatua, a kuia, male and female leaders, and mokopuna. It takes a huge amount of courage to dig deep and express oneself creatively." In Aotearoa New Zealand we remain in a mental health crisis, with increasing numbers only representing reported cases. The Key to Life Trust and I Am Hope promote positive attitudinal societal change in schools and communities up and down the country, funding private care and counselling for young people stuck-in-the-mud on waiting lists. The staff and owners of Art by the Sea Gallery, and the artists whose mahi toi were exhibited in this show, were proud to offer their valuable work and time to support this important cause. Te Koha October 2017 This exhibition was held in support of the Key to Life Charitable Trust and their I Am Hope campaign, raising awareness and funds for youth mental health and suicide prevention. We are hugely grateful to the artists and poets who contributed their incredible mahi to this event and cause. She is a wood carver and a sculptor working with stone carving, steel, corten steel, and cast bronze (NZ). She does her own welding for her faceted steel artwork and outdoor garden sculptures (NZ). Originally from Taranaki, Anna is now based in Benin in Africa but returns regularly to create her New Zealand sculptures. Anna has a BFA in sculpture from the University of Canterbury. In her modern sculptures, she works with themes of the female form in relation to strength and fragility, balance, identity, and symmetry. Her more abstract and minimalised forms conceal complex ideas about feminine roles and the projection of the inner self through the outer form. Anna’s works are autobiographical, using the female figure to communicate her experiences. Of her 2023 exhibition, she said: This exhibition explores the two sides of my reality from the static works portraying myself in the present form conjuring hard, but delicate lines to the light hearted, tender works which refer to memories and dream states produced from a distortion of reality and transient, personal thoughts that revisit the playful mischief and mystery of childhood. Anna is a regular participant in sculpture symposia and sculpture park exhibitions both locally and abroad. Anna has participated in (and won prizes in) international symposia in Qatar, Montenegro, Cyprus, Australia, Denmark, Romania, Albania, Macedonia, Egypt, Turkey, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Korea, and Costa Rica, among others. Many of her symposium pieces have been installed as public art sculptures following the event. In New Zealand, Anna was awarded first prize for her work at sculpture symposia in Rotorua (2014), Whangarei (2012), and the Coromandel (2008). She has been exhibited on multiple occasions at Sculpture Onshore (Devonport), Sculpture on the Peninsula (Banks Peninsula), Art in a Garden (Canterbury), and Shapeshifter at the Dowse (Lower Hutt). She has twice been a finalist in the prestigious Wallace Art Awards (2016 and 2018). Anna was a trustee on the board of Eco Artists New Zealand, a charitable trust that uses funds from the sales of art to help environmental projects, specifically focusing on native New Zealand species and their ecosystems. On her views about the relationship between humans and environments, Anna said: …the figure represents myself in varying states of tension and emotion but the new elements are recognising the structure, the strength, and with that the weakness of the communities we are connected to. Anna has completed many commissions of indoor and outdoor sculpture and is available for more.

In his pop art, Christian has the unique ability to capture memory in a way that is both nostalgic and joyful. His style is at times subtle, comical, and personal, compared with other pop art that may be more cliched or appropriative. Meanwhile, his landscape paintings evoke feelings of joy and freedom, celebrating Aotearoa New Zealand's incredible surfing beaches. Speaking to his love of the great outdoors, Christian’s surfing and contemporary beach painting comes from his own experiences exploring Aotearoa’s coast lines in the North and South Islands. His abstract modern art paintings and sculptures are inspired by his childhood memories, film and music media of different decades, and festivals and famous people from the past. Christian's artwork touches the nostalgia nerve within a wide variety of ages, inviting us to remember the golden years in all their glory. I like to be creative in as many ways as possible. Whatever it is to get across my idea and explore what I am doing. I make sculptures. I do large installations in the landscape. I use photography, paint, screen printing, have a rock band, I make videos and film. This is the way I want to continue. I pride myself in doing different things. Christian has a diploma in design (Visual Communications) from Unitec in Auckland. He worked as a designer directing ads, magazines, and logos for several years before leaving that work to follow his dream and become a full-time artist. For a conceptual artwork, Christian begins with idea and composition. He then searches for hours for the type of images that will support this composition. Mostly they are a mix of images taken from online and his own drawings. He then uses a coarse screen (like the old fashioned newspaper screen of 60 dots per inch) to transpose the image over his painting technique. This process is reminiscent of comic book artworks from the 60's and 70's. Actual painting starts in the beginning and is applied throughout the entire process. The final piece of pop art contains layers upon layers of painting, design, and screen printing, often with some oil pastel stick as the final layer. Christian continues to be remembered for some of his more daring artistic endeavours. This includes his “Toetoe” installation series placed in several iconic Auckland locations, including in Auckland City Harbour (with the tide coming in!). Today, alongside his contemporary art followers, collectors, and investors, Christian has a small fanbase as a result of his feature film, This Papier Mache Boulder is Actually Really Heavy (2016), for which he won a number of international film festival awards. Christian has been represented by Art by the Sea Gallery since 2006. He is a prolific artist and has had many, highly successful exhibitions in our gallery. He has also appeared in public exhibitions and sculpture symposiums across the country. Christian has produced art on commission and continues to be available for such work. His work is held in many private collections, including the Wallace Trust which has over 40 of his pieces. Art for me is a passion. Sometimes pure instinct, sometimes quite structured, but usually it’s a fairly organic process. It makes me feel good to express myself. And it’s great to be able to share that with others. Thank you for the love. See inside Christian's studio >

Mary specialises in limited edition NZ fine prints and original paintings of birds and flowers. She is especially passionate about native NZ bird art and NZ flora and botanicals, as evidenced in her etchings of kōwhai flowers, NZ rata, nīkau palms, little ruru, kererū (NZ woodpigeon), and tūi, to name a few. Mary’s fine art prints (NZ) and original paintings draw inspiration and subject matter from New Zealand's urban and bush life, from unique flora and native birds to cityscapes, beach and seascapes, and pristine wildernesses. Her style can be described as rich, meticulous, rhythmic, and celebratory, while always grounded in realism. Mary’s etchings are a time-consuming and manual process following a traditional method of hand drawing on Zinc plates—acid etching followed by aqua-tinting or hand-colouring. Clients especially appreciate the individual hand-colouring watercolour art, meaning that each print has its own, unique quality. Today, Mary’s original nature painting is also gaining popularity, loved for their illustrative style and the luminous quality she draws from the paint. Formerly a teacher, Mary has worked as a fulltime, professional artist since 1983. The major part of her time is devoted to her etchings and original paintings. She has also been known to write and illustrate books. Her book Old Blue: The Rarest Bird in the World (Ashton Scholastic, 1993) documented the story of DOC conservationists saving the Chatham Islands robin from the brink of extinction to great reviews, winning the AIM non-fiction award in 1994. Mary lives in a wilderness of exceptional beauty with lush bush and rugged coastlines. Her wildlife art is created in a studio surrounded by native forest and regularly travels throughout New Zealand seeking subject matter for her work. Mary’s work is held in private collections in New Zealand and internationally.

Brendan Adams 2023 30th Anniversary Group Show 2022 Bio I trained as a painter but it was colour and all the possibilities of form and texture that attracted me to ceramics, and I am still stuck in the mud! One of the great things about clay is that there never seems to be an end to what you can do with it. As someone who likes to muck around with lots of ideas, clay has been the perfect partner in crime. I really do feel I have only just started. Brendan Adams is a pottery artist and ceramic designer who has amassed a large following of clientele drawn to his creative and highly innovative sculpture and ceramic wall art (NZ). He is known for his brightly coloured slipcast ceramics, originally using Crown Lynn clay. More recently, his contemporary abstract and figurative designs have seen him include other materials such as steel, brass, aluminium, and wood. While many of his pieces are decorative, some also serve a function, as we see in his ceramic art bird feeders, candle holders, smartphone speakers, and working radios. Brendan has been making a living from clay since 1987. He and his wife Kathryn set up a ceramic shop selling affordable original art in Kingsland, which they ran for ten years. In 2013, they opened Front Room Gallery where they exhibited their own work and featured other New Zealand potters. Together, they now run Brendan Adams Designs from their home studio in Auckland. Brendan has a diploma in Fine Arts from Otago Polytechnic, where he majored in painting. He has taught at Auckland's Unitec and the Auckland Studio Potter Society (Auckland Potters). His work has been exhibited throughout the country in major competitions and exhibitions where he has won several awards, and is represented in the Auckland Museum, James Wallace Trust, and regional collections. Brendan’s domestic ware is well recognised for its pacific colours, easy kiwi attitude, and inventiveness. See inside Brendan's studio >

Find NZ art, abstract art NZ, and affordable original art at Art by the Sea Gallery. Catherine Manchester Abstract Oil Painter Catherine Mansfield is a trained fine artist specialising in abstract and figurative work. From Wellington, Catherine thinks of her paintings as “landscapes of the mind” and often includes elements of the sea in them. More > 2020 Price $1,680.00 Figures from the Anthro Scene Price $1,850.00 Figuring the Multiverse Price $1,850.00 Bio Catherine Manchester is a mid-career abstract and figurative artist from Wellington, New Zealand. She holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Diploma of Fine Arts. Her paintings often have elements of the sea; she thinks of them as “landscapes of the mind.” Her current and ongoing body of abstract art (NZ) is inspired by a wild and windy Wellington night when her TV began producing pixelated images. The wild distortions of the images and changing bands of colour were my weird gift from the wind to the wire. I ran to get my cell phone and captured some of the fast changing images. I printed them off and for the next year or so I stayed with them, imagining how I would paint them. Catherine grew up in a coastal settlement of Eastbourne in Lower Hutt. Her early memories are of beaches in Auckland. As a teenager, she wrote her hopes and dreams into poems. When she was 19, the death of a friend plunged her into sorrow and her work is often about working her way towards the light and giving a permanence to those early dreams of love. I am interested in where we come from and the places we love and inhabit. When I turned 65, I wanted to know about my ancestors so I sent off a DNA sample and was surprised and delighted to find I was 51 percent Celtic and 41 percent Scandinavian, and with Italian, Spanish, and Greek for the rest. My ancestors lived by the sea in Cornwall, and some came from Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The Scandinavians are seafaring people. One of my early dreams was ancient artefacts being washed up on Days Bay beach. They looked Roman! Catherine is a writer and poet, as well as an artist. She spent 15 months in Auckland in Laingholm, a seaside settlement near Titirangi. It was a perfect place to paint, work on films and to start a novel in between covid lockdowns. Catherine has work in both private and public collections throughout New Zealand. Public collections include the Christchurch Law Society and Timaru's Aigantighe Art Gallery. In 2025, one of her works was published in The Orion Powerhouse Gallery Akaroa: A Half Century of the Arts by Marie Connolly. She was a finalist in the 2006 Adam Portraiture Award, the Greater Wellington regional art award in 2018, and the Whirinaki Whare Taonga Wellington Arts Review.
