Read the story of Art by the Sea and take a virtual walk through our Auckland art gallery. We exhibit fine and affordable original art and limited edition prints by NZ artists. Find Auckland art museums in New Zealand. About Us Making connections through art Kia Ora Koutou e nga Manuhiri. Nau mai, haere mai, haere mai. Hello and welcome to our gallery of established and emerging artists from Aotearoa New Zealand. Art by the Sea virtual tour Our Story Art by the Sea was established in 1991 in the historic Duders building on the waterfront of the seaside suburb, Devonport to showcase New Zealand art and artists. We would like to acknowledge the hard mahi of Bronwyn Davies who ran the Devonport art gallery for its first ten years in business and established its integral connection with the Devonport community. The current owners, Mike and Linda Geers, purchased the business in 2001 and built it up to the reputable Auckland art gallery it is today. Following the move to Takapuna in 2021, Art by the Sea has established strong ties to the Takapuna and Milford communities. We are honoured by the support and welcome we have received. We could (and may!) write a book with the stories that have travelled through or begun at Art by the Sea. Mike and Linda Geers interviewed by Mandy Jakich, Creative Connections Podcasts , Episode 188 (full interview below) There have been floods (in 2001 and during the infamous Auckland Floods 2023). There was the drunk driver who crashed their car through the front window. There have been practical jokes, such as the time we placed a giant sandstone kina on the beach by the ferry on April Fools’ Day, or a few years later when we precariously climbed the Edwards Parade clock tower to balance presents on top at Christmas. And there have been incredible community events—charity fundraisers for Amnesty International, War Child, the Key to Life Trust. On these nights, the gallery came alive as we witnessed poets and artists joining together in creative expression about human rights, children affected by war and conflict, and mental health awareness. The stories will continue... Today, Art by the Sea stands as a respected Auckland art gallery showcasing a wide variety of fine and affordable original art and limited edition prints from across Aotearoa New Zealand. We are proud to have a sister gallery, Art by the River , in Whanganui. Art by the Sea is a business but it is also a communal space that draws in residents and travellers alike seeking a little time-out and inspiration away from the chaos of today. We are kaitiaki (guardians) of this space. And this space provides manaakitanga (respect, support, and hospitality) to all who visit it. Hei kona mai. Kirsty’s summer bush and coastal scenes showcase New Zealand’s incredible native trees and flora, including nikau palms, harakeke flowers (NZ flax), cabbage trees, toetoe, kawakawa, kōwhai, and blossoming pōhutukawa. Her paintings feature tui and pīwakawaka (fantail), with korimako (bellbirds) and kōtare (NZ kingfisher) also making an appearance. When I lost my wonderful dad the birds began to feature in my artwork. Birds even sounded louder to me. I bought a charm for a bracelet of a pīwakawaka and would often run the back feathers though my fingers as I thought of him. As I paint each bird I want them to look as though they are thinking something. Watching something. Communicating with each other. A snapshot of them in thought. When I lost my beautiful mum, once again the birds sounded louder. For over 20 years Kirsty has been a successful artist capturing the intensity of colour and light found in New Zealand’s unique native bush and coastal scenes. She began her career in advertising and now cherishes the peace of the canvas and her subject matter. When I start a painting and the first layers are coming together there's a piece of me that knows how it will look completed, and there will be a part of it that surprises me. Sometimes, in the middle of the process, I have to stop and wait a while to gather my thoughts and get back on track. So I stop. That painting needs a rest. Kirsty’s appeal and recognition as one of New Zealand's foremost landscape artists has been celebrated in national art publications such as Art News and Asian Art News. She also features in the New Zealand Favourite Artists book (2010) edited by Denis Robinson. Her range and experience in different techniques such as acrylic painting, watercolour, and etching has increased her popularity amongst collectors. Her Art by the Sea exhibitions consistently sell well and her growth in popularity is a testament to the timeless quality and detail of her NZ landscape paintings. Nestled in their settings, my birds give me a lot of peace. They are company. When a show is all put together and the birds are lined up in their bush and foliage settings I almost feel as if I can hear them. They are windows to a green restful place. With all the chaos surrounding us, advertising hammering us, political uncertainty, climate madness, I want my paintings to communicate peace. To slow us down. To literally stop and breathe.

His style is diverse, ranging from early metal collages of boats and sailing life to classic plein-air paintings of NZ to modern downtown city scenes. More recently, Graham has enjoyed painting beautiful and wildly colourful flower gardens, often with a white villa stark against the sky in the background. I have the whole world in my garden, a place for reflecting on life and nature. Graham has been carrying his paint box around since he was about eight years old. He paints in both oil and acrylic, depending on the artwork. In his early quirky conceptual collages, he was known to upcycle metal and found objects. New Zealand art critic, T. J. McNamara, has described Graham's NZ landscape art as "filled with light and full of charm and joy in water, clouds and sky.” I have had a lifetime of conceptual art, but I find that now I have returned to the beginning. My paintings are a synthesis of sketchbook drawings and memory, expressing the visual poetry that resonates within the bounds of my past and present. To express that tranquillity in my own language and to acknowledge how beauty can be in the common world around us and let my paintings be a refuge from the everyday tribulations, and to celebrate nature is my raison d’etre. Starting his career as an advertising art director and illustrator, Graham worked for many international agencies. He won many awards in this role, working on iconic NZ brands like Air NZ, Edmonds, Hubbard cereals, Cuisine Magazine, Belly-Gully, and more. Up until his retirement, painting was Graham’s escape from the commercial world. Now, he is able to devote more time to his passion.

Julie’s abstract modern art paintings are representational, using colour and texture to reimagine the structural landforms and branching deciduous trees found in the Waikato plains and the coastal Coromandel Peninsula. Many of her works include native NZ bird art, including depictions of the tīeke (saddleback), kōtuku (white heron), and pīwakawaka (fantail). Alongside texture and colour, there is a stunning depth of layers in Julie's work. Sometimes the birds appear in striking and realistic detail, while at other times they are more abstract, worked into the landscape. She loves metal leaf and these are often featured in her work, or hidden under layers creating luminosity. As a wildlife artist, Julie tells us that she constantly finds herself seeking out birds in her garden, listening for their calls, and noticing them wherever she travels. The changing colours of the seasons are also a fascination, and her palette often changes with them. Julie is self-taught, developing her skill and technique through hours of practice and exploration. Julie paints intuitively, allowing her work to evolve organically as she turns “mistakes” into discoveries. Her process begins with “play” or creative exploration, searching for inspiration. Her studio contains various works in progress, as she adds layers of paint, ink, pastel, collage and various mediums until forms emerge. Julie says that she never stops learning or looking for new sources of inspiration while always maintaining her own sense of style and uniqueness. Her work is held in private collections across New Zealand and abroad.

Jules Kesby is a fine artist and oil painter known for her incredibly detailed and realistic wildlife art and nature painting. Jules is originally from Zimbabwe, now based in Auckland, and is especially known for her incredible oil paintings of African animals. Painting exclusively in oils, Jules is a mid-career artist and is self-taught. She paints with an almost photographic clarity combined with a painter’s understanding of glowing light, brush strokes, and atmospheric abstract backgrounds and wide landscape vistas. I have always had a fascination with the natural world. Detail is important and it gives me a view into the rhythm of nature, so that I can build a relationship with the subject and get a glimpse into their character. It takes time to get to know them which is why oil paints suit my process. The goal is to be more than merely a representation, and this takes gradual layers of paint. With a gentle coaxing, a conversation is begun, a story begins to unfold. Jules has lived in New Zealand for over 15 years. She is passionate about wildlife conservation and this love and care for nature comes through in her work. Her paintings are rated highly by national and international wildlife and nature photographers. Jules is available for commission work.

He is married to Sherie Kemp and they have three sons. He was born in Ōtautahi Christchurch and moved to the Bay of Plenty when he was two. His iwi (tribal connections) are Ngāi Tahu, Ngāpuhi, and Te Arawa (Ngāti Mākino). Every time I start carving an old bit of wood I am always reminded of the tree it once was, and how it lived for centuries before it became the piece of wood I'm carving. As l start carving more into the piece I get a sense l am being directed with my chisels from the grains and natural flows of the wood. As the pieces evolve into form, I feel like they are old ancient relics from another time and l get to take the layer of overgrowth from them to reveal an old life force that once lived in Te Waonui O Tanemahuta (our ancient forest). A time forgotten . . . Joe is self-taught and works primarily in wood as his chosen medium. He enjoys the “secrets and surprises” that New Zealand native trees have within them. Joe’s standing and wall sculptures (NZ), or wall masks, depict human forms and faces emerging out of the wood. He has said that he feels the human form connects him with his ancestral history, bringing new meaning and purpose to the finished work. I sense a connection with Tane Mahuta (the life force of the tree) as I'm working with the wood, so it is quite a special feeling. I also carve a variety of stone, where again there is a connection with Papatuanuku (Earth Mother). I look to bring out the Wairua (essence) in each piece, starting from where the material originated and using any special features and grains in the stone and wood. Joe has over 20 years’ experience as a sculptor. He has participated in sculpture symposiums around the country, most notably at the Lake House Wood Sculpture Live symposium where he won first prize in 2012 and 2013. His work has evolved into the style and form we see today, drawing together traditional Māori carving with contemporary styles and cross-cultural influences (as we see in the Viking-like helmets on some pieces), allowing him to form his own, unique brand of contemporary Māori art. Joe's Māori wood carving is strong in wairua (spirit). They have a presence. We feel they protect our gallery space and offer something to our local community - we often speak with customers who tell us they believe the sculptures drew them into our store. [Today], I have a deeper understanding and respect for my work and the mediums I use which helps me connect to the wairua within. My work depicts new beginnings in a new world, with presence of Kaitiakitanga (Guardianship), Amorangi (Leadership), Mana (prestige, self-worth), kaha (strength), hope, and purpose.

She is known for her encaustic art NZ, where oil pigments are mixed with hot, liquid wax and painted onto canvas for brilliant and vibrant colour. Her work mainly focuses on representations of people, including paintings of dancers and modern portraits. …faces, gestures, clothing and possessions all have a story to tell, revealing aspects of the person within the shell. To freeze and transfer a moment. To capture a person’s life. Giving a visual representation is not a summary of that person’s life, and definitely not all there is to tell. It is not possible to read an individual’s life in one image because we are made up of layers and we are complicated. I'm searching for the blueprint, the mark of the maker, the beginning of what we become. Jayne has been inspired by other figurative artists such as Vanessa Beecroft, Rineka Dijkstra, and Marlene Dumas. She is interested in humanity, character, anonymity, and what creates these questions or concerns within us. Contemplating the story of Adam and Eve in one exhibition, she noted that you don’t have to be religious to appreciate the themes in the story, especially the shame associated with nudity. When do we sense our nakedness? When do we stand on that edge which tilts us from being happy in our own skin? When do we become aware of how different we are? I think it is getting younger, that edge, our own tree of knowledge, the internet constantly informing us how we should look, what to wear and who to be. Born in the UK, Jayne immigrated to New Zealand with her parents and settled first in Henderson before moving to Helensville and now Kaipara. Her formal training was conducted at Hungry Creek Art and Craft School for a year before going fulltime at Ruthorford College to attain a certificate in Visual Arts. Jayne went on to teach art at the Get Creatives Suburban Titirangi program. Jayne’s paintings are collected for their vibrant colour and striking presentation. She has work in the UK, Europe, and the USA as well as nationally in New Zealand.

Her landscapes, skyscapes, and urban scenes capture passing moments that have struck her while out travelling or hiking—a small red barn in a hay field, a complex cloud formation, bright red tomatoes spilling out of a wooden crate, a perfectly still and reflective lake. Landscapes have continually changing aspects and I enjoy working with the fluid motion this engenders. The sky plays an important role in the landscapes I paint, its vastness and expressiveness is a constant source of inspiration. Holly began painting at an early age and attended several years of portrait painting workshops and untutored still life painting sessions. She works mainly in strongly pigmented oils, enjoying the depth of colour, vibrancy, and texture offered by this medium. Her work has been further enhanced by attending courses at an Atelier in Edinburgh where she refined her skills in classical and traditional realistic oil painting and returned to New Zealand with a stunning selection of paintings of Europe. My main inspirations for painting are light, colour and atmosphere. I aim to use these elements as a means of creating an integral connection with the subject. Growing up in New Zealand surrounded by natural beauty, has inspired in Holly a passion for expressing sky and light on the canvas. The sky takes on a special significance and its vast and ever-changing nature is an inspiring subject matter for Holly’s work. New Zealand landscapes continue to influence her alongside the Scottish and European historical architecture and scenery that has brought to light new creative possibilities. Whether the moody atmosphere of a misty sound, or a Parisian windowsill with fluttering gauze curtain, Holly’s paintings open a door into a different time and place, one that may speak to us in its familiarity, or offer an imaginative escape.
