More > New 2026 Living Interior Price $5,000.00 Retro Interior - Dunedin Price $5,800.00 Tropical Interior Out of stock Bio Raymond Jennings is a New Zealand artist currently based in Hamilton. His colourful paintings of NZ house interiors offer us glimpses into New Zealand home and bach lifestyles with native bird life and NZ landscape scenes often appearing through the windows. His still life painting (or "shelf life") suggests warmly nostalgic domestic scenes. My paintings and drawings are a positive expression of our world in form and colour, motion and character, radiance, and depth, with the energies of universal inspiration. Raymond’s contemporary oil painting carries a dynamic energy. His virtuoso colour arrangements, light and dark contrast, and strong sense of form and movement combine to offer inviting and lively house interiors. In his work, there is adept attention to spatial dynamics and dimensions coupled with a sense of stylised homeliness. Each room is laid out to draw us in – indeed, we feel as if we could almost step into them. Born in New Zealand, Raymond has been an artist most of his life. He began painting and exhibiting at the age of twelve. Two years later, his work featured in a nationwide Society of Arts touring exhibition. He also painted a 20m mural inside Kamo High School library, Whangārei, and became a working member of the Northland Society of Arts at the age of fourteen. Raymond studied at Elam School of Fine Arts, Auckland University, graduating in 1975. A theatrical childhood, with both parents acting and producing plays, my father also being an eccentric physics teacher, and a family friend being a prominent architect, all introduced me to creative expression. Then, being introduced to oil painting on canvas at age twelve, with exhibitions and sales of work soon after confirmed my direction as an artist. Raymond has exhibited in solo and group shows in New Zealand, the USA, and Singapore. He has been a finalist and prize winner in New Zealand arts competitions since 1977, including the Parklane Art Award and Auction (Auckland Museum), the James Wallace Art Awards (Auckland), the Duxton Art Awards (Wellington), the Molly Morpeth Canday Art Awards (Whakatāne), and the Waitakere Trust Art Awards (Auckland). He was a Parkin Drawing Award finalist in 2024 with his pen and ink drawing, Christo’s New York Studio – 1985. Raymond has completed many commissions for private and corporate clients and continues to be available for this work.

Jules Kesby is a fine artist and oil painter known for her incredibly detailed and realistic wildlife art and nature painting. Jules is originally from Zimbabwe, now based in Auckland, and is especially known for her incredible oil paintings of African animals. Painting exclusively in oils, Jules is a mid-career artist and is self-taught. She paints with an almost photographic clarity combined with a painter’s understanding of glowing light, brush strokes, and atmospheric abstract backgrounds and wide landscape vistas. I have always had a fascination with the natural world. Detail is important and it gives me a view into the rhythm of nature, so that I can build a relationship with the subject and get a glimpse into their character. It takes time to get to know them which is why oil paints suit my process. The goal is to be more than merely a representation, and this takes gradual layers of paint. With a gentle coaxing, a conversation is begun, a story begins to unfold. Jules has lived in New Zealand for over 15 years. She is passionate about wildlife conservation and this love and care for nature comes through in her work. Her paintings are rated highly by national and international wildlife and nature photographers. Jules is available for commission work.

She is known for her encaustic art NZ, where oil pigments are mixed with hot, liquid wax and painted onto canvas for brilliant and vibrant colour. Her work mainly focuses on representations of people, including paintings of dancers and modern portraits. …faces, gestures, clothing and possessions all have a story to tell, revealing aspects of the person within the shell. To freeze and transfer a moment. To capture a person’s life. Giving a visual representation is not a summary of that person’s life, and definitely not all there is to tell. It is not possible to read an individual’s life in one image because we are made up of layers and we are complicated. I'm searching for the blueprint, the mark of the maker, the beginning of what we become. Jayne has been inspired by other figurative artists such as Vanessa Beecroft, Rineka Dijkstra, and Marlene Dumas. She is interested in humanity, character, anonymity, and what creates these questions or concerns within us. Contemplating the story of Adam and Eve in one exhibition, she noted that you don’t have to be religious to appreciate the themes in the story, especially the shame associated with nudity. When do we sense our nakedness? When do we stand on that edge which tilts us from being happy in our own skin? When do we become aware of how different we are? I think it is getting younger, that edge, our own tree of knowledge, the internet constantly informing us how we should look, what to wear and who to be. Born in the UK, Jayne immigrated to New Zealand with her parents and settled first in Henderson before moving to Helensville and now Kaipara. Her formal training was conducted at Hungry Creek Art and Craft School for a year before going fulltime at Ruthorford College to attain a certificate in Visual Arts. Jayne went on to teach art at the Get Creatives Suburban Titirangi program. Jayne’s paintings are collected for their vibrant colour and striking presentation. She has work in the UK, Europe, and the USA as well as nationally in New Zealand.

Out of stock Exhibitions 30th Anniversary Group Show 2022 Bio Merle Bishop is a contemporary New Zealand artist inspired by the humour and happiness of dogs (especially when they’re at the beach!). By nature, in every sense of the word, dogs are colourful. As Merle explains, her signature pieces (happy dogs art, dog runs in, runs out, runs across the image) portray the energetic, continual ritual of not only dogs but of life: “dogs are fun and know how to remain happy!” I see ordinary things and ideas emerging and developing in my mind, a never ending flow…they are just thoughts, fun-loving imaginings that eventually find their place on the paper, initially for my own pleasure but fanned by the recent discovery that these scribblings also bring pleasure to others. Merle is strongly influenced by her graphic design background. Her first running dogs were mono-prints, a series created in 1990 called, “dog, fog, jog…” These prints were made as a temporary alternative to etching. Soon, she began painting fish swimming alongside the dogs. This soon developed into dogs swimming with fish, the fish became flying fish, and, before long, the dogs were flying too. Along with her colourful wall art and pastel painting, Merle has also created sensory sculpture, including a bronze sculpture nz dog with its body parts labelled in braille. I find each day on the beach as I walk my own dog, so much happiness. This continues to motivate me as I try to capture some of this craziness in my work, so when a little joy is required at home it may be found on the wall preserved in pastel, etching, or bronze.

Her fine art photography captures pockets of beauty in the everyday world: the texture of nīkau berries falling like beads down a trunk; bright citrine hibiscus flowers in a bed of blue/green leaves; or jewelled water pooling in coloured patches over a mossy forest floor. I have always been a visual creature, drawn to beautiful colour palettes and the awe-inspiring compositions created by mother nature and by artisans alike. Natalie worked for many years in a demanding career while also raising a young family. Then, in 2012, her husband Guy bought her a camera for Christmas. “I love seeing the world through your eyes,” he said, and immediately everything changed for her. From that day, she had a tool to capture and construct a world view that she hadn’t realised existed. It ignited a wellspring of self-expression, and a love affair with nature. I’m drawn to the untamed and unrelenting beauty served up by nature every day for everyone who chooses to pause long enough to connect with it. Natalie’s photographic art has been described as “a celebration of the often overlooked” but she likes to think of it like a trail of breadcrumbs, leading us back to treasure that which we have long since forgotten to see, to acknowledge, or to pay tribute to. As a botanical photographer, Natalie captures the texture as well as the vivid beauty of the flower. Each piece of her work is a microcosm of nature’s wonder: a vignette of the majesty that exists under our very noses... just waiting for us to claim it. Her art is also a subtle statement in activism. By composing and presenting each ‘unremarkable’ serving of nature, I hope to elevate the reverence and respect that our beautiful world deserves… Art is cheap, but nature is priceless. As Natalie has explained, photographing nature is a mirror for her; it is a truth and a vehicle to process, recall, and reframe the beliefs and experiences that shape her life. A camera her constant companion, Natalie is inspired by art's capacity to soothe the soul, and to change the way we see the world.

While oil portraiture is the main avenue for his art, David also occasionally presents highly detailed still life painting for sale at Art by the Sea. In these paintings, David chooses simple, often unnoticed, items from everyday life. David is a self-taught oil painter and draughtsman. In his approach to fine art portrait painting, he views the whole picture first as a construction of abstract qualities—colour, shape, tone—on the picture plane in order to communicate an overall sense, rather than to focus on a single subject or object. He uses representation to draw the viewer into the poetic world of the painting. In creating this believable world, he encourages us to look beyond the objective, towards the subjective inner workings of the mind. David has spent much of his time studying traditional painting, from the renaissance to the early 20th century, and this knowledge underpins his work. He has worked as a painting and drawing tutor, and he has work in the Wallace Art Collection. He has been selected to exhibit in the Adam Portrait Awards three times and has been a finalist twice, including with his Portrait of Esther Deans. Pictured left is his self-portrait.

Julie’s abstract modern art paintings are representational, using colour and texture to reimagine the structural landforms and branching deciduous trees found in the Waikato plains and the coastal Coromandel Peninsula. Many of her works include native NZ bird art, including depictions of the tīeke (saddleback), kōtuku (white heron), and pīwakawaka (fantail). Alongside texture and colour, there is a stunning depth of layers in Julie's work. Sometimes the birds appear in striking and realistic detail, while at other times they are more abstract, worked into the landscape. She loves metal leaf and these are often featured in her work, or hidden under layers creating luminosity. As a wildlife artist, Julie tells us that she constantly finds herself seeking out birds in her garden, listening for their calls, and noticing them wherever she travels. The changing colours of the seasons are also a fascination, and her palette often changes with them. Julie is self-taught, developing her skill and technique through hours of practice and exploration. Julie paints intuitively, allowing her work to evolve organically as she turns “mistakes” into discoveries. Her process begins with “play” or creative exploration, searching for inspiration. Her studio contains various works in progress, as she adds layers of paint, ink, pastel, collage and various mediums until forms emerge. Julie says that she never stops learning or looking for new sources of inspiration while always maintaining her own sense of style and uniqueness. Her work is held in private collections across New Zealand and abroad.

Drawing on upcycled materials, vintage wallpapers, religious iconography, and collectibles, Lee-Ann’s work has a nostalgic and haunting quality. She is known for her bird, still life, and nature painted silverware. My ideas are always evolving as I grow older and life changes. I used the cup motif repeatedly in my work to represents domesticity, nurturing, and memories. Lee-Ann developed her artistic style over many years juggling her practice with raising four children. She describes her art from this period as working through ongoing themes of identity in relation to motherhood and domesticity. She has been influenced by Sally Mankus’s mixed media and recycled object art, Sylvia Siddell’s “anxious household” still lifes, and Jacqueline Fahey’s portraits of domestic family relations. She especially appreciates Tony Fomison who uses a monochrome palette of thinly applied paint wiped back to expose light; Lee-Ann thinks of this as a metaphor for “wiping clean layers of grim.” Inspired by 17th Century Dutch Vanitas painting, Lee-Ann’s current vintage wall art combines religious icons, wallpaper patterns, and symbolic childhood collectibles with New Zealand native flora and fauna. Some of her most recent work is about her late mother. Her china cabinet was full of treasures she had collected throughout her life, all having her special memories attached to them. Sadly, when I go to the recycle centres and garage sales I see hundreds of these same treasures that have been discarded. I collect and use these treasures in my art, breathing new life into these once loved objects.I think about the memories that might have been attached to each object. I use oil paint on recycled metal trays, doilies, table clothes, tea towels, cupboards, etc. Lee-Ann was born in 1966 and grew up in Marlborough. She has lived in Nelson ever since leaving school. She holds a Visual Arts diploma and degree from Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology. Her work is held in private collections across New Zealand. Lee-Ann is available for commissions.

Craig’s NZ bird art and his large wildlife landscapes are inspired less by photographs and more by observation and research. Influenced by his background in graphic design, Craig looks for colour and detail in his subjects, while also noting down unique subtleties in their behaviour. I have observed tūī in their natural environment for years. It’s their personality, they almost have an arrogance about them as if they know they have adjusted better than most other native birds to the urban environment. Travelling to remote locations around New Zealand, Craig will sit and study his subjects for hours. It is here, without distraction, that Craig gains insight into certain bird habits and their particular or unusual postures. Māori mythology and New Zealand history have also been influential in Craig’s NZ art, as he shares his learning about the role of our native birds in founding stories and in the sophisticated structure of Māori beliefs and customs. While he observes bird interaction in their natural habitats, Craig is also interested in the way birds engage with man-made objects in urban environments. This shed at Stanley Point wharf, Devonport is the most amazing colour, and the lighting effects the colour generates are beautiful. When the lighting is right on a clear, still day, the angles of the tin create rich dark and light hues of the base colour... I started reading the signage one day as I admired the lettering skills of a profession I was once involved in. The beautiful brush control on the serif font is a skill long-forgotten, and the aging of the sign and the rust creeping into the fixtures adds to the time and history of the shed. Also, the message the sign portrays—the choice of wording goes back to a time when certain language was acceptable… I wonder what the colour of the shed was back then. The modern sign has almost been produced to clash with maximum impact. So what is so dangerous that you can’t dive from this shed? …I have used two species of birds to almost thumb their noses at the authority behind the signage… The terns’ balletic skills, skimming the surface of the bay, and their precise diving skills are a majestic sight. The Kingfishers, ever vigilant, notice any movement in the tidal zone. They pounce on any unsuspecting crustacean moving from cover… Craig’s painting process always begins with sketching and a colour study, to see if all the elements he has in mind will work together. The blocking in of the composition begins with broad brush strokes to fill the canvas and create a base for the painting. The vision is then built up using finer and finer brushes to achieve high detail. By the end of the painting, Craig will be using a tiny brush (almost a pencil) to note fine detail on a blade of grass or the glint in a bird’s eye. Craig developed his understanding of colour and his skills in realism, precision, and detail during his 25-year career in graphic design, where he specialised in illustration and packaging. his passion for birds began at a much younger age when he raised and rescued nestlings; sparrows that had fallen from a nest, blackbirds, thrushes, and many other species spent time in his parents’ hot water cupboard. He moved on to raise and breed budgies for many years and began to draw birds as a child. Craig’s strong interest in New Zealand’s great outdoor spaces grew through his love of surfing, which took him all over the country. Today, his travelling and his love of birds are expressed through his art. Craig Platt has regular exhibitions at Art by the Sea Gallery. His work, particularly his tui painting, is held in private collections across the country.

He is drawn to details and textures, relishing the moments when he becomes engrossed in a subject and can envision the finished photograph. Largely self-taught, Jonathan’s style is influenced by Ansel Adams and the American West Coast movement of the middle 1900’s. Jonathan studied engineering science at Oxford University and enjoyed success at its photographic society. After losing both his parents to cancer, Jonathan emigrated to New Zealand where he met and fell in love with his now wife Julie. It was Julie who encouraged Jonathan to pursue his passion for photography. In Jonathan’s black and white photography process, the initial camera exposure is followed by what he terms an interpretation stage . Originally done in the darkroom, he now manages this on his computer with a stylus (tablet pen). He adjusts overall brightnesses, colours, and contrasts with a slow and subtle build-up of effect (called dodging and burning), taking hours or days on each photograph. This is the part of the process he loves the most. Before 2022, Jonathan's camera of choice was a Large Format Field View Camera made by the British firm Gandolfi. Resembling the plate cameras from history, this camera is made largely from wood and has a bellows. Every time he removed the camera from his backpack, Jonathan would marvel at its beauty. He would crouch under a dark cloth to focus and set up the shot. Exposures could take an hour or more. Jonathan was once asked by a young boy if he had a proper camera hidden inside, or was the outside just for show? In late 2022, in a big change, he began using two old digital cameras, one by Fujifilm and the other Leica. Whilst retaining his philosophy of making every shot count, the newer cameras offered freedom and spontaneity. Jonathan continues to create fine art photography, now with a contemporary approach in his attention to details and textures. He has a collection of photographic art at Art by the Sea Gallery and his work is found in private collections nationwide.
