Jules Kesby is a fine artist and oil painter known for her incredibly detailed and realistic wildlife art and nature painting. Jules is originally from Zimbabwe, now based in Auckland, and is especially known for her incredible oil paintings of African animals. Painting exclusively in oils, Jules is a mid-career artist and is self-taught. She paints with an almost photographic clarity combined with a painter’s understanding of glowing light, brush strokes, and atmospheric abstract backgrounds and wide landscape vistas. I have always had a fascination with the natural world. Detail is important and it gives me a view into the rhythm of nature, so that I can build a relationship with the subject and get a glimpse into their character. It takes time to get to know them which is why oil paints suit my process. The goal is to be more than merely a representation, and this takes gradual layers of paint. With a gentle coaxing, a conversation is begun, a story begins to unfold. Jules has lived in New Zealand for over 15 years. She is passionate about wildlife conservation and this love and care for nature comes through in her work. Her paintings are rated highly by national and international wildlife and nature photographers. Jules is available for commission work.

Drawing on upcycled materials, vintage wallpapers, religious iconography, and collectibles, Lee-Ann’s work has a nostalgic and haunting quality. She is known for her bird, still life, and nature painted silverware. My ideas are always evolving as I grow older and life changes. I used the cup motif repeatedly in my work to represents domesticity, nurturing, and memories. Lee-Ann developed her artistic style over many years juggling her practice with raising four children. She describes her art from this period as working through ongoing themes of identity in relation to motherhood and domesticity. She has been influenced by Sally Mankus’s mixed media and recycled object art, Sylvia Siddell’s “anxious household” still lifes, and Jacqueline Fahey’s portraits of domestic family relations. She especially appreciates Tony Fomison who uses a monochrome palette of thinly applied paint wiped back to expose light; Lee-Ann thinks of this as a metaphor for “wiping clean layers of grim.” Inspired by 17th Century Dutch Vanitas painting, Lee-Ann’s current vintage wall art combines religious icons, wallpaper patterns, and symbolic childhood collectibles with New Zealand native flora and fauna. Some of her most recent work is about her late mother. Her china cabinet was full of treasures she had collected throughout her life, all having her special memories attached to them. Sadly, when I go to the recycle centres and garage sales I see hundreds of these same treasures that have been discarded. I collect and use these treasures in my art, breathing new life into these once loved objects.I think about the memories that might have been attached to each object. I use oil paint on recycled metal trays, doilies, table clothes, tea towels, cupboards, etc. Lee-Ann was born in 1966 and grew up in Marlborough. She has lived in Nelson ever since leaving school. She holds a Visual Arts diploma and degree from Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology. Her work is held in private collections across New Zealand. Lee-Ann is available for commissions.

She is known for her encaustic art NZ, where oil pigments are mixed with hot, liquid wax and painted onto canvas for brilliant and vibrant colour. Her work mainly focuses on representations of people, including paintings of dancers and modern portraits. …faces, gestures, clothing and possessions all have a story to tell, revealing aspects of the person within the shell. To freeze and transfer a moment. To capture a person’s life. Giving a visual representation is not a summary of that person’s life, and definitely not all there is to tell. It is not possible to read an individual’s life in one image because we are made up of layers and we are complicated. I'm searching for the blueprint, the mark of the maker, the beginning of what we become. Jayne has been inspired by other figurative artists such as Vanessa Beecroft, Rineka Dijkstra, and Marlene Dumas. She is interested in humanity, character, anonymity, and what creates these questions or concerns within us. Contemplating the story of Adam and Eve in one exhibition, she noted that you don’t have to be religious to appreciate the themes in the story, especially the shame associated with nudity. When do we sense our nakedness? When do we stand on that edge which tilts us from being happy in our own skin? When do we become aware of how different we are? I think it is getting younger, that edge, our own tree of knowledge, the internet constantly informing us how we should look, what to wear and who to be. Born in the UK, Jayne immigrated to New Zealand with her parents and settled first in Henderson before moving to Helensville and now Kaipara. Her formal training was conducted at Hungry Creek Art and Craft School for a year before going fulltime at Ruthorford College to attain a certificate in Visual Arts. Jayne went on to teach art at the Get Creatives Suburban Titirangi program. Jayne’s paintings are collected for their vibrant colour and striking presentation. She has work in the UK, Europe, and the USA as well as nationally in New Zealand.

Julie’s abstract modern art paintings are representational, using colour and texture to reimagine the structural landforms and branching deciduous trees found in the Waikato plains and the coastal Coromandel Peninsula. Many of her works include native NZ bird art, including depictions of the tīeke (saddleback), kōtuku (white heron), and pīwakawaka (fantail). Alongside texture and colour, there is a stunning depth of layers in Julie's work. Sometimes the birds appear in striking and realistic detail, while at other times they are more abstract, worked into the landscape. She loves metal leaf and these are often featured in her work, or hidden under layers creating luminosity. As a wildlife artist, Julie tells us that she constantly finds herself seeking out birds in her garden, listening for their calls, and noticing them wherever she travels. The changing colours of the seasons are also a fascination, and her palette often changes with them. Julie is self-taught, developing her skill and technique through hours of practice and exploration. Julie paints intuitively, allowing her work to evolve organically as she turns “mistakes” into discoveries. Her process begins with “play” or creative exploration, searching for inspiration. Her studio contains various works in progress, as she adds layers of paint, ink, pastel, collage and various mediums until forms emerge. Julie says that she never stops learning or looking for new sources of inspiration while always maintaining her own sense of style and uniqueness. Her work is held in private collections across New Zealand and abroad.

Alysn Midgelow-Marsden is a contemporary fine artist from Auckland with a northern European heritage. Her sculptures (tabletop and wall-mounted) are intricate mixed-media combinations of textiles, metal or found plastics, gilding, canvas, gesso, verdigris, and stitching. Alysn’s work is inspired by her curiosity with the human psyche. She is driven by her background in science, her continuing interest in the natural environment, and her attention to the social stereotypes associated with textiles and stitching. She combines her environmental interests with a fascination for the traditions of different cultures and times, finding connections in shared human experience. My practice delivers an invitation to create pleasurably intimate connections to personal experiences through subconscious, visceral, and emotive interactions. Marked visually by a complex, lyrical fluidity, the sculptural works articulate connections, responses, fragility, and strength. Alysn’s complex mixed media textile art presents forms and figures whose meaning are largely open to the viewer’s interpretation. Themes emerge slowly in her gentle yet obsessive mazes of stitching or crochet as she exploits the boundaries of the surfaces and creates subtle combinations of colour and material. Alysn has received awards for her work at national and international exhibitions, including the Mandurah Wearable Art show in Australia (for a work entitled ‘What Lies Beneath’); the Wall Brooches II exhibition in Australia (for ‘Taniwha’); and Nelson’s Changing Threads show in New Zealand (for “The Spaces Between VII”).

One of the great things about clay is that there never seems to be an end to what you can do with it. As someone who likes to muck around with lots of ideas, clay has been the perfect partner in crime. I really do feel I have only just started. Brendan Adams is a pottery artist and ceramic designer who has amassed a large following of clientele drawn to his creative and highly innovative sculpture and ceramic wall art (NZ). He is known for his brightly coloured slipcast ceramics, originally using Crown Lynn clay. More recently, his contemporary abstract and figurative designs have seen him include other materials such as steel, brass, aluminium, and wood. While many of his pieces are decorative, some also serve a function, as we see in his ceramic art bird feeders, candle holders, smartphone speakers, and working radios. Brendan has been making a living from clay since 1987. He and his wife Kathryn set up a ceramic shop selling affordable original art in Kingsland, which they ran for ten years. In 2013, they opened Front Room Gallery where they exhibited their own work and featured other New Zealand potters. Together, they now run Brendan Adams Designs from their home studio in Auckland. Brendan has a diploma in Fine Arts from Otago Polytechnic, where he majored in painting. He has taught at Auckland's Unitec and the Auckland Studio Potter Society (Auckland Potters). His work has been exhibited throughout the country in major competitions and exhibitions where he has won several awards, and is represented in the Auckland Museum, James Wallace Trust, and regional collections. She is a wood carver and a sculptor working with stone carving, steel, corten steel, and cast bronze (NZ). She does her own welding for her faceted steel artwork and outdoor garden sculptures (NZ). Originally from Taranaki, Anna is now based in Benin in Africa but returns regularly to create her New Zealand sculptures. Anna has a BFA in sculpture from the University of Canterbury. In her modern sculptures, she works with themes of the female form in relation to strength and fragility, balance, identity, and symmetry. Her more abstract and minimalised forms conceal complex ideas about feminine roles and the projection of the inner self through the outer form. Anna’s works are autobiographical, using the female figure to communicate her experiences. Of her 2023 exhibition, she said: This exhibition explores the two sides of my reality from the static works portraying myself in the present form conjuring hard, but delicate lines to the light hearted, tender works which refer to memories and dream states produced from a distortion of reality and transient, personal thoughts that revisit the playful mischief and mystery of childhood. Anna is a regular participant in sculpture symposia and sculpture park exhibitions both locally and abroad. Anna has participated in (and won prizes in) international symposia in Qatar, Montenegro, Cyprus, Australia, Denmark, Romania, Albania, Macedonia, Egypt, Turkey, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Korea, and Costa Rica, among others. Many of her symposium pieces have been installed as public art sculptures following the event. In New Zealand, Anna was awarded first prize for her work at sculpture symposia in Rotorua (2014), Whangarei (2012), and the Coromandel (2008). She has been exhibited on multiple occasions at Sculpture Onshore (Devonport), Sculpture on the Peninsula (Banks Peninsula), Art in a Garden (Canterbury), and Shapeshifter at the Dowse (Lower Hutt). She has twice been a finalist in the prestigious Wallace Art Awards (2016 and 2018). Anna was a trustee on the board of Eco Artists New Zealand, a charitable trust that uses funds from the sales of art to help environmental projects, specifically focusing on native New Zealand species and their ecosystems. On her views about the relationship between humans and environments, Anna said: …the figure represents myself in varying states of tension and emotion but the new elements are recognising the structure, the strength, and with that the weakness of the communities we are connected to. Anna has completed many commissions of indoor and outdoor sculpture and is available for more.

Pou te Whenua Exhibitions 30th Anniversary Group Show 2022 Bio Ngahiwi Walker is a Māori wood carver known for his beautifully crafted Māori sculpture or pou (pillars). His iwi (tribe) are Ngāti Porou in Tai Rāwhiti (the East Coast) of Aotearoa New Zealand’s Te Ika-a-Māui (North Island). Originally from Te Araroa in the Gisbourne Region, Ngahiwi is now based in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. Ngahiwi works mostly with macrocarpa and occasionally NZ tōtara. He hand-carves each piece, creating a charcoal effect with a blow torch and finishing with a bristled brush. Every pou tells a story in the Māori wood carving and the moko (tattoo), some tales and memories passed down by elders, others speaking to the mana (spiritual energy/standing) of men and women and their position within the iwi (tribe) and hapu (community). Ngahiwi began carving in 2003 to help someone he knew who had undergone a traumatic experience. He wanted to do something for them so he carved a pou. The family was taken away by it and very grateful. My first carvings were gifts for family members whose lives had been affected in some way by death or birth. Since then, I have been carving stories that I remember from way back. Ngahiwi’s contemporary Māori art is in high demand, often carved on commission. Pieces that do come into the gallery are gratefully received as they contribute much to the wairua (spirit) of our space. Ngahiwi is available for commissions. Please contact us for information about available works.

He paints intuitively, rarely using preparatory sketches but instead allowing the work to take shape organically. A key focus for Carl is achieving balance in line, tone, colour, and overall composition. The incredibly precise lines and 3-dimensional shapes in Carl’s abstract fine art comes from his industry background in sign writing with a specialty in pin-striping for Hot Rods—a trade he learnt from his father. His artistic influences include cubists and impressionists such as Vincent Van Gogh, Wes Freed, Wifredo Lam, and Jean Michel Basquiat. Carl’s passion is the outdoors and interpreting the many varied people and experiences that colour his life. Some of his landscape scenes and NZ beach art have been painted en plein air in and around the west coast beaches of Auckland. Each of Carl’s geometric modern art paintings is meticulously and painstakingly hand-painted and then sealed with a final protective varnish. Symbols and intersecting planes suggest a way into deciphering his paintings, but the real beauty lies in discovering something new every time you look them.
