In his pop art, Christian has the unique ability to capture memory in a way that is both nostalgic and joyful. His style is at times subtle, comical, and personal, compared with other pop art that may be more cliched or appropriative. Meanwhile, his landscape paintings evoke feelings of joy and freedom, celebrating Aotearoa New Zealand's incredible surfing beaches. Speaking to his love of the great outdoors, Christian’s surfing and contemporary beach painting comes from his own experiences exploring Aotearoa’s coast lines in the North and South Islands. His abstract modern art paintings and sculptures are inspired by his childhood memories, film and music media of different decades, and festivals and famous people from the past. Christian's artwork touches the nostalgia nerve within a wide variety of ages, inviting us to remember the golden years in all their glory. I like to be creative in as many ways as possible. Whatever it is to get across my idea and explore what I am doing. I make sculptures. I do large installations in the landscape. I use photography, paint, screen printing, have a rock band, I make videos and film. This is the way I want to continue. I pride myself in doing different things. Christian has a diploma in design (Visual Communications) from Unitec in Auckland. He worked as a designer directing ads, magazines, and logos for several years before leaving that work to follow his dream and become a full-time artist. For a conceptual artwork, Christian begins with idea and composition. He then searches for hours for the type of images that will support this composition. Mostly they are a mix of images taken from online and his own drawings. He then uses a coarse screen (like the old fashioned newspaper screen of 60 dots per inch) to transpose the image over his painting technique. This process is reminiscent of comic book artworks from the 60's and 70's. Actual painting starts in the beginning and is applied throughout the entire process. The final piece of pop art contains layers upon layers of painting, design, and screen printing, often with some oil pastel stick as the final layer. Christian continues to be remembered for some of his more daring artistic endeavours. This includes his “Toetoe” installation series placed in several iconic Auckland locations, including in Auckland City Harbour (with the tide coming in!). Today, alongside his contemporary art followers, collectors, and investors, Christian has a small fanbase as a result of his feature film, This Papier Mache Boulder is Actually Really Heavy (2016), for which he won a number of international film festival awards. Christian has been represented by Art by the Sea Gallery since 2006. He is a prolific artist and has had many, highly successful exhibitions in our gallery. He has also appeared in public exhibitions and sculpture symposiums across the country. Christian has produced art on commission and continues to be available for such work. His work is held in many private collections, including the Wallace Trust which has over 40 of his pieces. Art for me is a passion. Sometimes pure instinct, sometimes quite structured, but usually it’s a fairly organic process. It makes me feel good to express myself. And it’s great to be able to share that with others. Thank you for the love. See inside Christian's studio >

Read the story of Art by the Sea and take a virtual walk through our Auckland art gallery. We exhibit fine and affordable original art and limited edition prints by NZ artists. Find Auckland art museums in New Zealand. About Us Making connections through art Kia Ora Koutou e nga Manuhiri. Nau mai, haere mai, haere mai. Hello and welcome to our gallery of established and emerging artists from Aotearoa New Zealand. Art by the Sea virtual tour Our Story Art by the Sea was established in 1991 in the historic Duders building on the waterfront of the seaside suburb, Devonport to showcase New Zealand art and artists. We would like to acknowledge the hard mahi of Bronwyn Davies who ran the Devonport art gallery for its first ten years in business and established its integral connection with the Devonport community. The current owners, Mike and Linda Geers, purchased the business in 2001 and built it up to the reputable Auckland art gallery it is today. Following the move to Takapuna in 2021, Art by the Sea has established strong ties to the Takapuna and Milford communities. We are honoured by the support and welcome we have received. We could (and may!) write a book with the stories that have travelled through or begun at Art by the Sea. Mike and Linda Geers interviewed by Mandy Jakich, Creative Connections Podcasts , Episode 188 (full interview below) There have been floods (in 2001 and during the infamous Auckland Floods 2023). There was the drunk driver who crashed their car through the front window. There have been practical jokes, such as the time we placed a giant sandstone kina on the beach by the ferry on April Fools’ Day, or a few years later when we precariously climbed the Edwards Parade clock tower to balance presents on top at Christmas. And there have been incredible community events—charity fundraisers for Amnesty International, War Child, the Key to Life Trust. On these nights, the gallery came alive as we witnessed poets and artists joining together in creative expression about human rights, children affected by war and conflict, and mental health awareness. The stories will continue... Today, Art by the Sea stands as a respected Auckland art gallery showcasing a wide variety of fine and affordable original art and limited edition prints from across Aotearoa New Zealand. We are proud to have a sister gallery, Art by the River , in Whanganui. Art by the Sea is a business but it is also a communal space that draws in residents and travellers alike seeking a little time-out and inspiration away from the chaos of today. We are kaitiaki (guardians) of this space. And this space provides manaakitanga (respect, support, and hospitality) to all who visit it. Hei kona mai. We look forward to welcoming you into our gallery. Linda and Mike Geers
- Sean Crawford Laser Cut Metal Art NZ | Art by the Sea Gallery
Lazer cut metal art NZ by Sean Crawford. Sean's innovative steel artwork and mixed media art are inspired by NZ landscapes, history, and social and environmental issues. Find contemporary NZ artists and garden art NZ at Art by the Sea Gallery. Sean Crawford Laser Cut Metal Art NZ Sean Crawford is an internationally acclaimed New Zealand sculptor and storyteller from the rural Wairarapa. He works in a range of materials, including taxidermy, mixed media art, and laser-cut metal art (NZ), and is inspired by NZ landscapes, history, and social and environmental issues. More > Rustic Huntaway Price $2,995.00 Mantle Price $7,500.00 Kuri and the Hare Price $15,500.00 Follow My Path Price $50,000.00 Bio It is not the object that defines us - it merely implicates us. Sean Crawford is a successful New Zealand sculptor who has attained national and international recognition for his innovative multimedia and steel artwork. Originally Wellington-based but now living in the rural Wairarapa, his works are collected nationally and overseas. Known for having a layered approach to his art, Sean works in corten steel, laser-cut steel, reclaimed timber, and taxidermy, among other forms. His works are often large—depicting, for instance, a life-size antlered stag head—with intricate details, such as laser-cut fantail shapes or a metal huia bird skull. Sean’s artistic range includes: stainless steel garden art NZ cut into contemporary life-size animal sculptures; novel indoor and outdoor wall art NZ inspired by what he calls the ‘Pacific Modern’; and ecological art artistically exploring NZ landscapes and history in meticulous, multimedia detail. His inspirations are as varied as they are evolving. Techniques he learned from his boat building father interweave with creativity that frequently highlights environmental and social messages. History plays a role with some of Sean’s works questioning the contradictions of New Zealand's colonial past, whilst also being influenced by the Gothic storyteller Edgar Allen Poe and the paintings of Bill Hammond. Art and the great outdoors were features of Sean’s childhood. He could draw before he could walk (or so the family story goes!). Holidaying in the Wairarapa, Sean spent his summer helping out on local farms with livestock and pest control. Although he initially trained as a plumber, overseas travel rekindled his passion for art and design. On his return to New Zealand, he graduated with an honors degree in Design in 2003, and has been a full-time sculptor ever since. A highlight of Sean's career to date is his 2015 commission 'Waiting for Hammond', a two metre tall Huia bird sculpture set on a headland overlooking the Irish Sea. In New Zealand, his public work ‘The Head of John Doe’ was installed in Palmerston North in early 2022, and is sited near the entrance to the Te Manawa Arts Centre. His latest public sculpture is found in Masterton (in the Wairarapa). Titled ‘Distant Chant’, this two-piece work is made from corten steel. It stands approximately three meters high and depicts both male and female Huia ‘in flight’. Sean passionately believes that art should be as accessible as possible to all. His work is now being seen in even more public spaces, both in New Zealand and abroad. Outside the New Zealand embassy in Washington D.C. sits another commissioned piece. This work is titled ‘The Cloak of Remembrance’ and is an embracing cloak made of laser cut red poppies. It's a sign that his ideas, although largely home-grown, are respected and relevant on the world stage.

She works mainly in oil on canvas but enjoys playing with other mediums too. While she is particularly drawn to modern portraits and figurative work, she has been known to experiment with other subject matter. Thinking about her approach to art, Paula appreciates this quote from nationalgalleries.org: Expressionists searched inwards for deeper meaning. The style is defined by free brushwork, heightened colour and jagged or elongated forms. Paul is self-taught. She is inspired by individuality in people, and looks to discover/reveal that in her artwork. Paula is interested in exploring options for commissions.

René Baxalle came to fine art woodturning when he was given a lathe in 2001. Previously, he had associated woodturning exclusively with furniture—banister, table legs. After joining a local woodturners club, he discovered the creative potential of the lathe. Early on, he started experimenting with woven wood inlays, liking the intricacy of weaving and the way each strand blends and connects with others to become one. To him, each strand can represent an experience in someone’s life, and the resulting woven form is the person’s mind or soul. René grew up on a farm in the southwest of France, in an area called Dordogne. He moved to New Zealand in 1991. He found the transition liberating, moving from a country steeped in tradition to a newer, younger country, more willing to embrace innovation and creativity. I didn’t choose woodwork as a career but instead opted for the electrical trade. This might be the reason I so love working with wood now. René describes staying at home to look after their two children as a turning point in his life. As he explains, spending time with young children can be a rich experience, a chance to see the world through different eyes. René does not use synthetic material and will not use glue if he can avoid it because, as he says, he want the different parts which form a piece to want to be together, not be forced. Another design he likes involves overlapping pieces of wood like the cladding of wooden houses or the sides of wooden clinker boats. This style, found in his waka huia (Māori war canoe), is similar to wood weaving, with all parts supporting each other to become one. René belongs to woodturning Auckland clubs and wood working nz societies. His work is held in private collections across New Zealand. He is available for commissions, including to create stands for other artworks (as in the example pictured).
