Her landscapes, skyscapes, and urban scenes capture passing moments that have struck her while out travelling or hiking—a small red barn in a hay field, a complex cloud formation, bright red tomatoes spilling out of a wooden crate, a perfectly still and reflective lake. Landscapes have continually changing aspects and I enjoy working with the fluid motion this engenders. The sky plays an important role in the landscapes I paint, its vastness and expressiveness is a constant source of inspiration. Holly began painting at an early age and attended several years of portrait painting workshops and untutored still life painting sessions. She works mainly in strongly pigmented oils, enjoying the depth of colour, vibrancy, and texture offered by this medium. Her work has been further enhanced by attending courses at an Atelier in Edinburgh where she refined her skills in classical and traditional realistic oil painting and returned to New Zealand with a stunning selection of paintings of Europe. My main inspirations for painting are light, colour and atmosphere. I aim to use these elements as a means of creating an integral connection with the subject. Growing up in New Zealand surrounded by natural beauty, has inspired in Holly a passion for expressing sky and light on the canvas. The sky takes on a special significance and its vast and ever-changing nature is an inspiring subject matter for Holly’s work. New Zealand landscapes continue to influence her alongside the Scottish and European historical architecture and scenery that has brought to light new creative possibilities. Whether the moody atmosphere of a misty sound, or a Parisian windowsill with fluttering gauze curtain, Holly’s paintings open a door into a different time and place, one that may speak to us in its familiarity, or offer an imaginative escape.

Her broad skill base of glass art (NZ) includes (but is not limited to) cast glass, kilnforming, glass slumping, and flameworking or lampworking. She’s particularly known for her incredible glass sculptures inspired by her time travelling across Africa. Jo’s background includes equal parts science and the arts with glasswork offering a happy marriage of both. She has two apprenticeships in Medical Laboratory Technology, gained during the mid-80s, and believes a seed of interest in glasswork was apparent even back then. I got to play with test tubes, petri dishes, glass slides and pipettes—measuring and mixing liquids and chemicals, and spending a lot of time looking down a microscope! Jo also holds a degree in English and Linguistics and certificates in English language teaching and graphic design. She traces her passion for glass artistry to a mosaic conference in Hobart, Tasmania. There, she saw a presentation by a sculptor who made life-sized birds with kilnformed glass feathers. She was “fascinated and hooked” by the intricacy of the birds, each with a wingspan of 5 metres. Jo now makes her own glass birds (NZ), with intricate carved patterning. Glass encompasses my love of science and art—it is the junction where both loves meet! Jo has completed numerous master classes in kilnforming and flameworking, learning from both local and international glass artists. Her incredible Naisiae (pronounced “nay-zee) sculpture is a life-size glass representation of a shuka (type of sarong) worn by Maasai women on the East Coast of Africa. This piece would be an outstanding showpiece in any art glass collection.

These garden sculptures NZ are sturdy and highly unique, each piece individually hand-crafted and made to age well in the elements. What began as a hobby turned into a business in the year 2000 when the artists were asked to make a life-size pregnant cow out of corrugated iron. This sculpture launched a metal art New Zealand business and the name “Rustic Twist” evolved out of that. While the lamb, medium sheep, and angora metal goat are the most popular, Art by the Sea has also hosted several life-size metal lamas, wild boars, the occasional peacock, and a giant cactus. We have also transported a life-size Friesian cow to Southland, and hosted a one-off flock of sheep art installation piece for the Milford Centre Sculpture Trail (2020) in support of the Key to Life Trust. All of Rustic Twist animals are made from recycled metal on a steel frame. The large animals, like the sheep and goats, are handmade from recycled corrugated iron roofing. Some of the smaller bird sculptures are made using repurposed sawblades or pieces cut out of old copper hot water cylinders and then assembled by hand. All sculptures are made to order, so please contact us at least three weeks in advance of the date the artwork is required. He is married to Sherie Kemp and they have three sons. He was born in Ōtautahi Christchurch and moved to the Bay of Plenty when he was two. His iwi (tribal connections) are Ngāi Tahu, Ngāpuhi, and Te Arawa (Ngāti Mākino). Every time I start carving an old bit of wood I am always reminded of the tree it once was, and how it lived for centuries before it became the piece of wood I'm carving. As l start carving more into the piece I get a sense l am being directed with my chisels from the grains and natural flows of the wood. As the pieces evolve into form, I feel like they are old ancient relics from another time and l get to take the layer of overgrowth from them to reveal an old life force that once lived in Te Waonui O Tanemahuta (our ancient forest). A time forgotten . . . Joe is self-taught and works primarily in wood as his chosen medium. He enjoys the “secrets and surprises” that New Zealand native trees have within them. Joe’s standing and wall sculptures (NZ), or wall masks, depict human forms and faces emerging out of the wood. He has said that he feels the human form connects him with his ancestral history, bringing new meaning and purpose to the finished work. I sense a connection with Tane Mahuta (the life force of the tree) as I'm working with the wood, so it is quite a special feeling. I also carve a variety of stone, where again there is a connection with Papatuanuku (Earth Mother). I look to bring out the Wairua (essence) in each piece, starting from where the material originated and using any special features and grains in the stone and wood. Joe has over 20 years’ experience as a sculptor. He has participated in sculpture symposiums around the country, most notably at the Lake House Wood Sculpture Live symposium where he won first prize in 2012 and 2013. His work has evolved into the style and form we see today, drawing together traditional Māori carving with contemporary styles and cross-cultural influences (as we see in the Viking-like helmets on some pieces), allowing him to form his own, unique brand of contemporary Māori art. Joe's Māori wood carving is strong in wairua (spirit). They have a presence. We feel they protect our gallery space and offer something to our local community - we often speak with customers who tell us they believe the sculptures drew them into our store. [Today], I have a deeper understanding and respect for my work and the mediums I use which helps me connect to the wairua within. My work depicts new beginnings in a new world, with presence of Kaitiakitanga (Guardianship), Amorangi (Leadership), Mana (prestige, self-worth), kaha (strength), hope, and purpose.

He paints intuitively, rarely using preparatory sketches but instead allowing the work to take shape organically. A key focus for Carl is achieving balance in line, tone, colour, and overall composition. The incredibly precise lines and 3-dimensional shapes in Carl’s abstract fine art comes from his industry background in sign writing with a specialty in pin-striping for Hot Rods—a trade he learnt from his father. His artistic influences include cubists and impressionists such as Vincent Van Gogh, Wes Freed, Wifredo Lam, and Jean Michel Basquiat. Carl’s passion is the outdoors and interpreting the many varied people and experiences that colour his life. Some of his landscape scenes and NZ beach art have been painted en plein air in and around the west coast beaches of Auckland. Each of Carl’s geometric modern art paintings is meticulously and painstakingly hand-painted and then sealed with a final protective varnish. Symbols and intersecting planes suggest a way into deciphering his paintings, but the real beauty lies in discovering something new every time you look them.

However, the thrill of bringing it all together on a canvas can be nearly as exciting as having been there. Alan Sanders is NZ artist and oil painter specialising in ocean art paintings, seascapes, and sailing ship art. His large oil paintings of ships at sea feature traditional sailing windjammers are highly detailed and evoke the atmosphere and adventure of another era, while his racing and classic yachts capture the joy and excitement of water sports today. Alan is especially interested in the stories behind the vessels he paints. His large clipper ships, in particular, remind us of the significance of the sailing vessel as an essential part of New Zealand’s and Australia’s early history. These ships carry the stories of officers and sailors who braved the elements to bring pioneering men, women, and children to a new life in the Antipodes—“stories of courage, hardship and seamanship.” The ships that came to New Zealand and Australia had appropriate names like: Marlborough, Waimate, Waitangi, Invercargill, Waikato, and are an important part of the New Zealand story. Alan has been inspired by watercolourist J. Spurling, who illustrated a number of books on clipper ships written by Basil Lubbock. These great illustrations capture the many ships that plied the waters between the UK, New Zealand and Australia with wonderful stories that tell their histories and final fates. Nearly all of Spurling's original illustrations were lost during the blitz of London in World War 2, but Alan has used some of the smaller illustrations as a starting point for his large oil paintings. I have painted them in a much looser and atmospheric style, with my own interpretation of the sea and skies, to appeal to a more contemporary market. Currently based in Auckland, Alan's former career was in the graphic design and advertising industry. He is a life member of the Designers Institute of New Zealand (DINZ) and a founding committee member of the 'Best' Graphic Design Awards. Alan retired from the design industry and is now able to concentrate on his main love of nautical canvas art.

Jana specialises in oil portraits. For Jana, portrait painting is a vehicle through which to visually process aspects of the “human condition.” Themes in her work include the frustrating boundaries and restrictions we contend with in daily life, and her own deep conviction of the intrinsic value of humankind. When she paints, Jana is drawn to the tension of creating an impression of someone, whilst celebrating the mediums used as the “fabric” of that impression—the paint, the brush, and the canvas or board. By revealing not only the physical materials with which the work is made but also the hand which created it, she hopes to achieve an honesty and sense of authenticity. Her painting process involves building the picture plane with brush or knife strokes, whilst leaving parts of the canvas undeveloped, emulating the effect that the progression of time has on our character. She aims to enable the viewer to trace her brush, offering them a window into the past whilst illuminating the obscurity of time. Her constructional process further alludes to how situations and moments in life might influence, build and shape us, rendering us all perpetual “works in progress”. Jana completed a BA(Fine Art) in South Africa at the University of Pretoria. Growing up, she enjoyed ample opportunity to travel with her family and, having lived on three continents, Jana developed strong cultural competency and an ability to adapt. Relocating with her husband and two boys to New Zealand in 2016 meant yet another new environment. Through this experience, Jana came to see the common denominator of our humanity—as the “crown of creation,” more fundamental than any of our differences. This understanding prompted the current direction of her work. Recently, Jana has become intrigued by different world-views and how, as guides, they direct our understanding of truth, meaning, reality, and ultimately our attempts to make sense of the world around us. She is also inspired by the relational capacity of humankind. Deciphering non-verbal cues from each other is part of our daily functioning; by using her subjects’ names or nicknames as the title of some works, Jana invites the viewer to engage with them as individuals. Jana’s work has been recognised and exhibited by art institutions such as the Pretoria Arts Association, Sasol New Signatures, and the Ekurhuleni Mnyele Fine art awards. More recently, she has been a finalist in New Zealand contemporary art awards such as the Tasman National Art Awards, where she won the ‘People’s Choice’ award twice (2019 & 2021), as well as the Supreme art award in 2022. Jana was selected as a finalist at the Adam Portraiture Awards (2020 and 2022) hosted by the NZ Portrait Gallery in Wellington, and won the Committee's Choice award at the Taranaki National Art Awards in 2020. Her fine art portrait painting is held in private collections across the country and she is available for commissions.

He is known for his modern art oil paintings on canvas based on moments captured in old photographs, particularly black-and-white photographs that he paints in colour. I try to breathe life and the moment into what are otherwise static records of a time and a place… I can’t reproduce with photographic accuracy, which is not my aim, but I can use colour to increase the depth of the image, creating something that the photo cannot be. Hamish used to spend hours sitting on the floor of the Auckland Public Library photographic section, deliberating long and hard about which photos he would paint. He is especially drawn to Magnum photographers like Robert Doisneau and Cartier-Bresson. His style comes across as almost illustrative, while retaining the memory of the photograph, with a surrealist edge. Hamish began his art career as a jeweller, receiving instruction in 1986 at the Daniel Clasby Workshop where he worked for two years before establishing his own workshop. He sold jewellery and small sculptures at The Fingers Contemporary Jewellery Gallery, and was involved with a group of young jewellers called Jewellery Unlimited which ran for several years until it dissolved. In 1986, he became involved with The Medallion Group and exhibited in three of the early shows. This group later renamed to become The Medallion Association of New Zealand, or MANZ, and has continued to show Hamish’s work. Hamish began painting in 1991 and has appeared in a number of exhibitions. Alongside Art by the Sea and MANZ, Hamish has exhibited his contemporary oil painting at The Cliff McPherson Gallery, Orexart, and Artis Gallery in Auckland.

An advocate for nature and the preservation of the environment, Derek is known for his oil paintings, wooden sculptures (NZ), and New Zealand wooden wall art showcasing Aotearoa New Zealand’s unique wildlife, including eels, fish, and native birds such as the tūī, kōtare (NZ kingfisher), and kererū (wild pigeon). A consistent style in Derek’s wildlife art is found in the attention he pays to different types of light. The colour palette in his oil paintings captures the half-light, moody yet beautiful, found on the west coast of Auckland and in the Hauraki plains. Derek believes his work practice is often about giving form to his thought processes. Usually when I begin a piece I have only a partial idea about the narrative and the form it will take. Solutions gradually unfold during the process of working and I love the journey of uncovering this mystery. Derek graduated from Elam School of Fine Arts in 1969 and Epsom Teacher Training College in 1970. At Elam, Derek’s painting tutor was Colin McCahon, which comes across in Derek’s skilful, atmospheric landscapes. As well as teaching, Derek has worked part-time in the fields of leather craft, jewellery, sculpture, painting, and photography. His jewellery featured in numerous group and solo exhibitions between 1982 and 1989. Derek works in his home studio in West Auckland, surrounded by nature, where he has lived for over 45 years. His teaching, post-graduate studies, art work, and involvement in the restoration of a river habitat in the Waitakere River Valley, all reflect his love of nature and concern for the conservation of the natural environment. His memorable exhibition, Dark Waters, at Lopdell House Gallery was a reflection on the transformation of the land on the Hauraki Plains and the tension between farming and the loss of wildlife habitats. Derek is a keen member of Riverwatch, a volunteer group that replants native vegetation around river banks and estuaries. Painting has been Derek’s main focus over the past fifteen or so years and his nature art has featured in numerous solo and group shows over that time. Alongside Art by the Sea, his sculptures and nature painting have appeared in solo exhibitions in Lopdell House (Titirangi, Auckland), Corbans Estate Centre (Henderson, Auckland,) and The Suter Gallery (Nelson).
