Kirsty’s summer bush and coastal scenes showcase New Zealand’s incredible native trees and flora, including nikau palms, harakeke flowers (NZ flax), cabbage trees, toetoe, kawakawa, kōwhai, and blossoming pōhutukawa. Her paintings feature tui and pīwakawaka (fantail), with korimako (bellbirds) and kōtare (NZ kingfisher) also making an appearance. When I lost my wonderful dad the birds began to feature in my artwork. Birds even sounded louder to me. I bought a charm for a bracelet of a pīwakawaka and would often run the back feathers though my fingers as I thought of him. As I paint each bird I want them to look as though they are thinking something. Watching something. Communicating with each other. A snapshot of them in thought. When I lost my beautiful mum, once again the birds sounded louder. For over 20 years Kirsty has been a successful artist capturing the intensity of colour and light found in New Zealand’s unique native bush and coastal scenes. She began her career in advertising and now cherishes the peace of the canvas and her subject matter. When I start a painting and the first layers are coming together there's a piece of me that knows how it will look completed, and there will be a part of it that surprises me. Sometimes, in the middle of the process, I have to stop and wait a while to gather my thoughts and get back on track. So I stop. That painting needs a rest. Kirsty’s appeal and recognition as one of New Zealand's foremost landscape artists has been celebrated in national art publications such as Art News and Asian Art News. She also features in the New Zealand Favourite Artists book (2010) edited by Denis Robinson. Her range and experience in different techniques such as acrylic painting, watercolour, and etching has increased her popularity amongst collectors. Her Art by the Sea exhibitions consistently sell well and her growth in popularity is a testament to the timeless quality and detail of her NZ landscape paintings. Nestled in their settings, my birds give me a lot of peace. They are company. When a show is all put together and the birds are lined up in their bush and foliage settings I almost feel as if I can hear them. They are windows to a green restful place. With all the chaos surrounding us, advertising hammering us, political uncertainty, climate madness, I want my paintings to communicate peace. To slow us down. To literally stop and breathe.

René Baxalle came to fine art woodturning when he was given a lathe in 2001. Previously, he had associated woodturning exclusively with furniture—banister, table legs. After joining a local woodturners club, he discovered the creative potential of the lathe. Early on, he started experimenting with woven wood inlays, liking the intricacy of weaving and the way each strand blends and connects with others to become one. To him, each strand can represent an experience in someone’s life, and the resulting woven form is the person’s mind or soul. René grew up on a farm in the southwest of France, in an area called Dordogne. He moved to New Zealand in 1991. He found the transition liberating, moving from a country steeped in tradition to a newer, younger country, more willing to embrace innovation and creativity. I didn’t choose woodwork as a career but instead opted for the electrical trade. This might be the reason I so love working with wood now. René describes staying at home to look after their two children as a turning point in his life. As he explains, spending time with young children can be a rich experience, a chance to see the world through different eyes. René does not use synthetic material and will not use glue if he can avoid it because, as he says, he want the different parts which form a piece to want to be together, not be forced. Another design he likes involves overlapping pieces of wood like the cladding of wooden houses or the sides of wooden clinker boats. This style, found in his waka huia (Māori war canoe), is similar to wood weaving, with all parts supporting each other to become one. René belongs to woodturning Auckland clubs and wood working nz societies. His work is held in private collections across New Zealand. He is available for commissions, including to create stands for other artworks (as in the example pictured).

  • Carol Readman Contemporary Abstract Watercolour Art of Auckland Landscapes in Bold Colour | Art by the Sea Gallery

Abstract landscape art by Carol Readman, established watercolour artist. Carol's watercolours depict Auckland landscapes in a contemporary style with skilled depth of colour. Find contemporary NZ artists, abstract watercolour art, and affordable original art at Art by the Sea Gallery. Carol Readman Abstract Watercolour Artist Carol Readman is an established New Zealand contemporary watercolour artist based in Auckland. Her abstract landscape art is inspired by the things she sees and experiences during walks taken around her local area. More > ! Bio Carol Readman is an established contemporary watercolour artist based in Auckland, New Zealand. Carol’s abstract watercolour art is most often painted after a walk around her local area, recalling her impressions of the scenery and activities. Her work is prized, in particular, for its contemporary style and the incredible depth and brightness of colour she is able to achieve, testifying to her skill and experience working with watercolours. Women of my age have seen thousands of pictures so they have a greater interest in simplified, pleasing, and balanced arrangements of one's own ideas and outlooks. By referring to abstraction in painting, I think that my intention is to create the essence of the subject rather than to reproduce the pictorial aspects of what is presented. I personally prefer the work to take on a life of its own as it grows naturally from my memory, vision or perspective. Carol is a self-taught artist who has been exhibiting her modern art for over 40 years. She studied at Christchurch Teachers College, Victoria University, and the University of Auckland. In her working life, she held positions in teaching, social work, personnel management, and industrial relations. As a painter, Carol feels an affinity to artists such as Doris Lusk, Austen Deans, Toss Woollaston, and Colin McCahon, among others. While travelling through Europe in her twenties, Carol discovered the French impressionists and was enamoured, in particular, by Manet. In London, she came across a large J. M. W. Turner painting at the National Gallery. It was this experience that encouraged her to explore atmosphere using watercolour, adding a unique delicacy to the fortitude of colour in her personal technique. Now retired, she is able to paint full time. Colour, form, and linear relationships are important to me with a particular place, event or significant person suggested in the composition. "To thine own self be true" has remained a guiding principal and this allows some personal issues and occasional problems to be resolved as each painting develops. My best advice to an aspiring artist would be to follow your thoughts when it comes to painting. Carol’s watercolour landscapes have been recognised by a number of regional and national awards, including the Pumphouse art awards in Takapuna and the (formerly) Telecom New Zealand Art Awards. She has also received first prizes at the Depot Art Awards in Devonport and the 2002 Royal Easter Show awards in Auckland (watercolour section). Her work is held in private collections nationally and internationally. Carol’s abstract modern art paintings are available to purchase unframed, for easy transport, with a few pieces framed up so you can see what they look like in store. Art by the Sea offers a full framing service at an additional cost.

While her subject matter is global and political, Lucy's work remains fervently empathetic in its creation and intent. Similar to dot painting or pointillism, Tallulah’s multi-layered mark making art presents imaginative gardens and vibrant spaces, showing us new details every time we look at them. Gazing at one painting, we might find purple seedpods, cherry blossom trees, NZ harakeke (flax), rising sunflowers, or a Van Gogh-like starry night. Another might show us floating icebergs and circling moons, while yet another offers a coconut tree before a rioting desert horizon. This is New Zealand landscape art that defies landscape conventions. I would describe my working style as expressionist maximalism/surrealism. I create work that is extravagantly detailed, inclusive, eclectic and often unashamedly beautiful. In the moment of painting, Tallulah is dedicated to her craft. Her work is intuitive and spontaneous, each piece growing from one corner to spread across the canvas or board. Inspiration comes from her own experiences, news gathered during her walks, and snippets from everyday life. Tallulah rarely involves reference images; instead, she transposes the psychological complexity of her interior world into lush and layered compositions. Her paintings might tell us something about the human condition, or about our place in the madness of contemporary life. I’m interested in movement and rhythm. I want to create works that vibrate. I set about doing this by juxtaposing unlikely colours, and the repetitive use of patterns and marks. I embrace the pleasure of process for its own sake, inviting the viewer to engage with the mark-making and to follow the myriad paths into the work to discover their own interpretation of how and what they see. There is a strongly recognisable yet ever-transient voice in Tallulah’s abstract landscape art. Natural motifs and patterned elements recur throughout: snake-like trees, floating moons, distorted reflections in bodies of water, and stippled night skies. Abstract and representational impulses co-exist in unorthodox harmony. There is a nuanced vulnerability to her work, an emotional charge or sensitivity, and intricate detail that is at once controlled, expressive, and experimental. I need to create intently, slowly and methodically. But also randomly, unplanned and irrationally. It’s as though several parts of me take turns creating, each part taking control when needed. To be loose and free, rigid and meticulous, considered and analysing or playful and experimental. Tallulah’s expressive art paintings of NZ are held in a number of private collections. She has been a finalist in the prestigious Parkin Drawing Award, the Miles Art Award, the Tasman Art Award, and the Cleveland Art Award.

Rosemary Eagles is an established contemporary abstract artist known for her paintings capturing the natural beauty of this country's vibrant plant life and stunning land, sky, and coastal environments. Her abstract landscape art has been described by collectors as both “peaceful and serene, vibrant and unique, or reminiscent of places visited.” She is especially known for her eye-catching paintings of NZ mānuka trees. Standing open and exposed are the Manuka trees, creating a line against the horizon. They are strong, durable and resilient against the harsh elements that batter them. Native Manuka plants offer multiple benefits to both the environment and humanity. These Manuka trees are the original source for our precious Manuka honey, Manuka oil, as well as being perfect for ecological restoration. Rosemary’s paintings of NZ are marked by her unrestrained use of colour and texture, testifying to her skill as an artist, her knowledge of different unique natural environments, and her industry experience in interior design and textiles. After excelling in art at school, Rosemary completed an Interior Design Diploma at Whitecliffe School of Art and Design in 1991. In 1996, Rosemary travelled extensively through the Middle East where countries such as Syria and Morocco exposed her to a completely different cultural and colourful environment, compared to the lush, fertile greens of New Zealand’s North Island. She went on to work as a textile importer where her contact with American and Indian textiles and fabrics increased her awareness of different substrates and textures, and stimulated her to pursue an earlier passion for oil painting. Rosemary finds moments of inspiration during family trips and hikes around New Zealand, especially when holidaying in the Coromandel or on daytrips up to Tāwharanui beach and conservation reserve. Tāwharanui Regional Park is located on the eastern end of Tokatu Peninsula which extends into the Hauraki Gulf just north of Kawau Island. In my mind this has always been a place of incredible beauty where rolling land meets the sea, with stunning beaches in every direction. Our family treasures this sacred piece of land which is simply idyllic. Rosemary has had over 12 exhibitions at Art by the Sea. Her earlier, bold fruit and flower paintings gave way to earthy terrains and strata, moody skies, and evocative horizons. Today, we see a lighter, uplifting colour palette in her nature painting with spring flowers, native ferns and flax, mānuka trees lit by touches of gold, and skilled expressions of New Zealand’s atmospheric coastal landscapes. Listen to Rosemary talk about her work in this 2022 episode of the Creative Matters podcast .

Jules Kesby is a fine artist and oil painter known for her incredibly detailed and realistic wildlife art and nature painting. Jules is originally from Zimbabwe, now based in Auckland, and is especially known for her incredible oil paintings of African animals. Painting exclusively in oils, Jules is a mid-career artist and is self-taught. She paints with an almost photographic clarity combined with a painter’s understanding of glowing light, brush strokes, and atmospheric abstract backgrounds and wide landscape vistas. I have always had a fascination with the natural world. Detail is important and it gives me a view into the rhythm of nature, so that I can build a relationship with the subject and get a glimpse into their character. It takes time to get to know them which is why oil paints suit my process. The goal is to be more than merely a representation, and this takes gradual layers of paint. With a gentle coaxing, a conversation is begun, a story begins to unfold. Jules has lived in New Zealand for over 15 years. She is passionate about wildlife conservation and this love and care for nature comes through in her work. Her paintings are rated highly by national and international wildlife and nature photographers. Jules is available for commission work.

Rosemary’s fine art background in still life and figure drawing coupled with her passion for horse riding has translated into a very contemporary version of the horse. While she has painted equestrian horses, Rosemary has a particular interest in the discipline of dressage. What I have always wanted to express in this imagery is the definition of the weight and mass of the horse, as well as the power and elegance in articulation. This is so clearly seen in dressage, itself an art form based on both physical and visual aesthetics. Dressage enhances the way a horse moves naturally, and at its best shows full harmony between horse and rider; horse and rider become a single entity. My intention is that my paintings should celebrate the athleticism and eloquence of this discipline, which demands a monumental approach, with simplicity and scale. Rosemary’s horse painting demonstrates her attention to structural detail and composition. At the same time, she is adept at translating the movement of the horse, especially in those paintings putting greater emphasis on the choreography of dressage. …the point is to catch the intrinsic quality of the movement… not always technically correct, and mostly not evident in photo records ...which is why it is better to watch and draw, better to remember and construct, rather than to copy minutely from photos, because this best expresses the way the horse actually goes. Rosemary deliberately paints little of the riders to ensure that the focus is on the horse. As she says herself, “…if the rider is very capable s/he becomes invisible, and the horse appears to go miraculously of its own volition without evident direction, and really the rider is identifiable by their hands and seat alone, their position… it is then possible to imagine the rider to be anyone, even one's own self.” Graduating with a degree from the University of Auckland’s Ilam Art School, Rosemary has painted and exhibited regularly since 1975. She has taught Art and Art History in secondary schools in Dunedin, Gisborne, Auckland, and Melbourne in Australia. Her paintings are in private collections across the country.

His long exposure and movement fine art photography capture the emotional atmosphere of landscapes, as experienced in the moment. There is poetry in Michel’s expression of art, a language that he is also beginning to express in words. A moment in indecisive movement. In between the chaos of tones and shades, an invisible flare forms from a different time and space. A moment of true stillness as the light bounces and is emblazoned across the movement. Maybe we should just ignore all that we have become accustomed to, blinded by an obvious life, stubbornly try to understand. The incandescence that is expressed through the soul of one’s self does not need to make sense. Michel Perrin was born in 1972 in Annemass, France. He spent his childhood there, close to the Swiss border. His deep interest and fascination with photography was cultivated during his teenage years. As a young man, this passion was further developed when he moved to New Zealand and was struck by the abundance of natural and wild beauty this and has to offer. The tones that resonate like a cacophony of emotions in constant motion, I narrate with shades and colours the time that passes. Reminds me of the lingering movement of a light that escapes time, a bright swirling vortex, the elements fighting each other in perfect harmony. As a professional photographer working in the commercial sector, Michel’s work has been featured in numerous NZ magazines. He has worked with a diverse range of New Zealand companies showcasing their company profiles and products. He entered the NZIPP Iris photographic competition for the first time in 2007, entering a mixture of landscape photography and portraiture. All eight of his submissions were placed and he received three silver and five bronze places. Michel’s photographic art is held in private collections across the country and he continues to work professionally as a portrait photographer.
