Price $270.00 Exhibitions 30th Anniversary Group Show 2022 Bio Merle Bishop is a contemporary New Zealand artist inspired by the humour and happiness of dogs (especially when they’re at the beach!). By nature, in every sense of the word, dogs are colourful. As Merle explains, her signature pieces (happy dogs art, dog runs in, runs out, runs across the image) portray the energetic, continual ritual of not only dogs but of life: “dogs are fun and know how to remain happy!” I see ordinary things and ideas emerging and developing in my mind, a never ending flow…they are just thoughts, fun-loving imaginings that eventually find their place on the paper, initially for my own pleasure but fanned by the recent discovery that these scribblings also bring pleasure to others. Merle is strongly influenced by her graphic design background. Her first running dogs were mono-prints, a series created in 1990 called, “dog, fog, jog…” These prints were made as a temporary alternative to etching. Soon, she began painting fish swimming alongside the dogs. This soon developed into dogs swimming with fish, the fish became flying fish, and, before long, the dogs were flying too. Along with her colourful wall art and pastel painting, Merle has also created sensory sculpture, including a bronze sculpture nz dog with its body parts labelled in braille. I find each day on the beach as I walk my own dog, so much happiness. This continues to motivate me as I try to capture some of this craziness in my work, so when a little joy is required at home it may be found on the wall preserved in pastel, etching, or bronze.

An advocate for nature and the preservation of the environment, Derek is known for his oil paintings, wooden sculptures (NZ), and New Zealand wooden wall art showcasing Aotearoa New Zealand’s unique wildlife, including eels, fish, and native birds such as the tūī, kōtare (NZ kingfisher), and kererū (wild pigeon). A consistent style in Derek’s wildlife art is found in the attention he pays to different types of light. The colour palette in his oil paintings captures the half-light, moody yet beautiful, found on the west coast of Auckland and in the Hauraki plains. Derek believes his work practice is often about giving form to his thought processes. Usually when I begin a piece I have only a partial idea about the narrative and the form it will take. Solutions gradually unfold during the process of working and I love the journey of uncovering this mystery. Derek graduated from Elam School of Fine Arts in 1969 and Epsom Teacher Training College in 1970. At Elam, Derek’s painting tutor was Colin McCahon, which comes across in Derek’s skilful, atmospheric landscapes. As well as teaching, Derek has worked part-time in the fields of leather craft, jewellery, sculpture, painting, and photography. His jewellery featured in numerous group and solo exhibitions between 1982 and 1989. Derek works in his home studio in West Auckland, surrounded by nature, where he has lived for over 45 years. His teaching, post-graduate studies, art work, and involvement in the restoration of a river habitat in the Waitakere River Valley, all reflect his love of nature and concern for the conservation of the natural environment. His memorable exhibition, Dark Waters, at Lopdell House Gallery was a reflection on the transformation of the land on the Hauraki Plains and the tension between farming and the loss of wildlife habitats. Derek is a keen member of Riverwatch, a volunteer group that replants native vegetation around river banks and estuaries. Painting has been Derek’s main focus over the past fifteen or so years and his nature art has featured in numerous solo and group shows over that time. Alongside Art by the Sea, his sculptures and nature painting have appeared in solo exhibitions in Lopdell House (Titirangi, Auckland), Corbans Estate Centre (Henderson, Auckland,) and The Suter Gallery (Nelson).

Each of Dulcie’s pieces is individually handmade, and original (one of a kind).

Carol’s abstract watercolour art is most often painted after a walk around her local area, recalling her impressions of the scenery and activities. Her work is prized, in particular, for its contemporary style and the incredible depth and brightness of colour she is able to achieve, testifying to her skill and experience working with watercolours. Women of my age have seen thousands of pictures so they have a greater interest in simplified, pleasing, and balanced arrangements of one's own ideas and outlooks. By referring to abstraction in painting, I think that my intention is to create the essence of the subject rather than to reproduce the pictorial aspects of what is presented. I personally prefer the work to take on a life of its own as it grows naturally from my memory, vision or perspective. Carol is a self-taught artist who has been exhibiting her modern art for over 40 years. She studied at Christchurch Teachers College, Victoria University, and the University of Auckland. In her working life, she held positions in teaching, social work, personnel management, and industrial relations. As a painter, Carol feels an affinity to artists such as Doris Lusk, Austen Deans, Toss Woollaston, and Colin McCahon, among others. While travelling through Europe in her twenties, Carol discovered the French impressionists and was enamoured, in particular, by Manet. In London, she came across a large J. M. W. Turner painting at the National Gallery. It was this experience that encouraged her to explore atmosphere using watercolour, adding a unique delicacy to the fortitude of colour in her personal technique. Now retired, she is able to paint full time. Colour, form, and linear relationships are important to me with a particular place, event or significant person suggested in the composition. "To thine own self be true" has remained a guiding principal and this allows some personal issues and occasional problems to be resolved as each painting develops. My best advice to an aspiring artist would be to follow your thoughts when it comes to painting. Carol’s watercolour landscapes have been recognised by a number of regional and national awards, including the Pumphouse art awards in Takapuna and the (formerly) Telecom New Zealand Art Awards. She has also received first prizes at the Depot Art Awards in Devonport and the 2002 Royal Easter Show awards in Auckland (watercolour section). Her work is held in private collections nationally and internationally. Carol’s abstract modern art paintings are available to purchase unframed, for easy transport, with a few pieces framed up so you can see what they look like in store. Art by the Sea offers a full framing service at an additional cost.

He has a wide range, from sunny NZ beach art to golden light on snow-dusted mountains, soft-flowing New Zealand waterfalls, and emerald green lakes. In all of his landscape photography, Peter’s distinctive style is apparent, showing an experienced understanding of light, detail and clarity, and the impact of wide panoramic shots made by stitching many frames together. Constantly seeking new inspiration, Peter conducts extensive research to uncover fresh subjects and locations that engage his audience. New Zealand may be small on the map, but these far flung islands pack more variety and grandeur into every corner than anywhere else. Not that it makes my job any easier, NZ is surrounded by vast oceans and that means one thing—rapidly changing weather & plenty of liquid sunshine! I work hard to capture images that portray an original point of view, but it's all about the light and getting yourself in the right place at the right time. And when things don't go to plan, I'll try again. I'm persistent if nothing else! Peter was drawn to photography at an early age. He learned to develop film in a darkroom and found the whole process, including the length of time it took to reveal each photograph, magical. He bought a Canon T70 in the late 80s, soon followed by a Bronica 645 120 film camera. Today, the latest generation of Phase One medium format camera equipment allows Peter to capture images with even greater precision and detail than previously possible. Peter prints all of his photographs himself using a large format printer with archival pigment inks onto 100% cotton-rag fine art paper or acid-free archival canvas. These processes are state of the art and the materials used are the highest quality available. Print permanence ratings were published in 2007 by the Wilhelm Research Institute of California. They rated the print permanence of the processes and materials Peter uses to be greater than 250 years (indoors). Peter’s first book, Looking For The Light , was released in 2017 to wide acclaim and has now sold out. In the same year, Peter completed a series of 20 large installations for Auckland International Airport, showcasing the NZ landscape on an extraordinary scale. His latest book, Land of Light: Landscape Photographs of New Zealand was released in late 2024 and is available on order. Peter’s New Zealand landscape photographic prints are held in collections around the world. He has completed commissions for a number of corporate clients (TVNZ, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Rydges Hotel, Vector Arena, and more). Art by the Sea stocks a number of Peter’s framed canvas art prints and fine art paper prints and a wide range of his unframed prints in store. We can arrange for any prints we do not stock to be made on order. We also offer framing and shipping services for national and international orders.

He is known for his modern art oil paintings on canvas based on moments captured in old photographs, particularly black-and-white photographs that he paints in colour. I try to breathe life and the moment into what are otherwise static records of a time and a place… I can’t reproduce with photographic accuracy, which is not my aim, but I can use colour to increase the depth of the image, creating something that the photo cannot be. Hamish used to spend hours sitting on the floor of the Auckland Public Library photographic section, deliberating long and hard about which photos he would paint. He is especially drawn to Magnum photographers like Robert Doisneau and Cartier-Bresson. His style comes across as almost illustrative, while retaining the memory of the photograph, with a surrealist edge. Hamish began his art career as a jeweller, receiving instruction in 1986 at the Daniel Clasby Workshop where he worked for two years before establishing his own workshop. He sold jewellery and small sculptures at The Fingers Contemporary Jewellery Gallery, and was involved with a group of young jewellers called Jewellery Unlimited which ran for several years until it dissolved. In 1986, he became involved with The Medallion Group and exhibited in three of the early shows. This group later renamed to become The Medallion Association of New Zealand, or MANZ, and has continued to show Hamish’s work. Hamish began painting in 1991 and has appeared in a number of exhibitions. Alongside Art by the Sea and MANZ, Hamish has exhibited his contemporary oil painting at The Cliff McPherson Gallery, Orexart, and Artis Gallery in Auckland.

Jana specialises in oil portraits. For Jana, portrait painting is a vehicle through which to visually process aspects of the “human condition.” Themes in her work include the frustrating boundaries and restrictions we contend with in daily life, and her own deep conviction of the intrinsic value of humankind. When she paints, Jana is drawn to the tension of creating an impression of someone, whilst celebrating the mediums used as the “fabric” of that impression—the paint, the brush, and the canvas or board. By revealing not only the physical materials with which the work is made but also the hand which created it, she hopes to achieve an honesty and sense of authenticity. Her painting process involves building the picture plane with brush or knife strokes, whilst leaving parts of the canvas undeveloped, emulating the effect that the progression of time has on our character. She aims to enable the viewer to trace her brush, offering them a window into the past whilst illuminating the obscurity of time. Her constructional process further alludes to how situations and moments in life might influence, build and shape us, rendering us all perpetual “works in progress”. Jana completed a BA(Fine Art) in South Africa at the University of Pretoria. Growing up, she enjoyed ample opportunity to travel with her family and, having lived on three continents, Jana developed strong cultural competency and an ability to adapt. Relocating with her husband and two boys to New Zealand in 2016 meant yet another new environment. Through this experience, Jana came to see the common denominator of our humanity—as the “crown of creation,” more fundamental than any of our differences. This understanding prompted the current direction of her work. Recently, Jana has become intrigued by different world-views and how, as guides, they direct our understanding of truth, meaning, reality, and ultimately our attempts to make sense of the world around us. She is also inspired by the relational capacity of humankind. Deciphering non-verbal cues from each other is part of our daily functioning; by using her subjects’ names or nicknames as the title of some works, Jana invites the viewer to engage with them as individuals. Jana’s work has been recognised and exhibited by art institutions such as the Pretoria Arts Association, Sasol New Signatures, and the Ekurhuleni Mnyele Fine art awards. More recently, she has been a finalist in New Zealand contemporary art awards such as the Tasman National Art Awards, where she won the ‘People’s Choice’ award twice (2019 & 2021), as well as the Supreme art award in 2022. Jana was selected as a finalist at the Adam Portraiture Awards (2020 and 2022) hosted by the NZ Portrait Gallery in Wellington, and won the Committee's Choice award at the Taranaki National Art Awards in 2020. Her fine art portrait painting is held in private collections across the country and she is available for commissions.

Pauline Allomes is a New Zealand artist and environmentalist based in Whanganui. She is known for her uniquely New Zealand nature painting and micrographs conveying her love of, and concern for, the natural world in which we live. Micrography (or microcalligraphy) is a form of calligram using words to create images or designs. It dates back to Jewish writing in the 9th century with similar uses in Christianity and Islam. Pauline’s New Zealand micrography uniquely employs writing conveying her environmental art activism in images depicting the environment she seeks to protect: Aotearoa New Zealand’s precious native bush and eco systems. I have a deep love and respect for our beautiful country and in times of stress find the beauty around me has a calming and healing effect. The effect man has had on this beauty I find disturbing. We are the only species on this wonderful world of ours that does not complete the circle of life. Sure, we go back to the earth, but while we are here we consume nature's resources and when we leave, we leave behind a myriad of possessions that pollute the earth. Art was a late discovery for Pauline. Uncertain of her ability, but eager to try, she attended art school for the first time in 2001. Pauline quickly fell in love with the work and the materials, indulging in every medium she could lay her hands on. Over the following years, her art slowly evolved into the nature art we see today, giving expression to her voice as an environmental and creative activist. The realization that through my art I can portray how beautiful I find the world we live in and my sorrow at the destruction we are causing was a turning point for my art , coupled with the development of micrography which seems to suit my drawing style. I can now create beautiful images that carry a strong message. If those that view these images are moved to make even a small change in their lives I have achieved my goal. Pauline is an award-winning artist who has appeared repeatedly in the NZ Herald. Her NZ art is held in private collections around New Zealand. She has been accepted 9 times for the Pattillo Whanganui Arts Review.

Similar to dot painting or pointillism, Tallulah’s multi-layered mark making art presents imaginative gardens and vibrant spaces, showing us new details every time we look at them. Gazing at one painting, we might find purple seedpods, cherry blossom trees, NZ harakeke (flax), rising sunflowers, or a Van Gogh-like starry night. Another might show us floating icebergs and circling moons, while yet another offers a coconut tree before a rioting desert horizon. This is New Zealand landscape art that defies landscape conventions. I would describe my working style as expressionist maximalism/surrealism. I create work that is extravagantly detailed, inclusive, eclectic and often unashamedly beautiful. In the moment of painting, Tallulah is dedicated to her craft. Her work is intuitive and spontaneous, each piece growing from one corner to spread across the canvas or board. Inspiration comes from her own experiences, news gathered during her walks, and snippets from everyday life. Tallulah rarely involves reference images; instead, she transposes the psychological complexity of her interior world into lush and layered compositions. Her paintings might tell us something about the human condition, or about our place in the madness of contemporary life. I’m interested in movement and rhythm. I want to create works that vibrate. I set about doing this by juxtaposing unlikely colours, and the repetitive use of patterns and marks. I embrace the pleasure of process for its own sake, inviting the viewer to engage with the mark-making and to follow the myriad paths into the work to discover their own interpretation of how and what they see. There is a strongly recognisable yet ever-transient voice in Tallulah’s abstract landscape art. Natural motifs and patterned elements recur throughout: snake-like trees, floating moons, distorted reflections in bodies of water, and stippled night skies. Abstract and representational impulses co-exist in unorthodox harmony. There is a nuanced vulnerability to her work, an emotional charge or sensitivity, and intricate detail that is at once controlled, expressive, and experimental. I need to create intently, slowly and methodically. But also randomly, unplanned and irrationally. It’s as though several parts of me take turns creating, each part taking control when needed. To be loose and free, rigid and meticulous, considered and analysing or playful and experimental. Tallulah’s expressive art paintings of NZ are held in a number of private collections. She has been a finalist in the prestigious Parkin Drawing Award, the Miles Art Award, the Tasman Art Award, and the Cleveland Art Award.

She works mainly in oil on canvas but enjoys playing with other mediums too. While she is particularly drawn to modern portraits and figurative work, she has been known to experiment with other subject matter. Thinking about her approach to art, Paula appreciates this quote from nationalgalleries.org: Expressionists searched inwards for deeper meaning. The style is defined by free brushwork, heightened colour and jagged or elongated forms. Paul is self-taught. She is inspired by individuality in people, and looks to discover/reveal that in her artwork. Paula is interested in exploring options for commissions.
