He works in cast bronze and hand-crafted ceramic, and has taught many classes and workshops on these mediums. I have been enthralled in the act of creation for many years now . . . [My bronze sculptures] have a textural quality that is so much a part of working with cast metals, and they show the physicality that is required to produce a finished work . . . they challenge the viewer to look, contemplate, and bring their own aesthetic sense of form and texture to the work. Bill’s earlier weird and wonderful bronze sculptures featured chevron shapes in many forms, interactive wall pieces with travelling marbles, and alien or underwater imaginary creatures with spines and pods. Today, his New Zealand contemporary art vessels and wall plaques depict NZ sea- and landscapes with diving gannets, soaring tui, and swimming hammerhead sharks. His large bronze tabletop art ocean scenes with historic sailing ships and waka have appeared in exhibitions and prompted several commissions. Some of Bill’s commissions include: a giant “Pelagic Chevron” public sculpture at the corner of Tangihua Street and Quay Street in Auckland City; a large, bronze interpretation of Captain Cook’s sextant; a bronze entranceway for the Wairakia Golf Course; a copper and ceramic fountain for the entrance to the Lake House Art Centre; bronze plaques for the Sir Edmund Hillary Ice Axe memorabilia case; and a sculpture of renowned art benefactor Lady Becroft’s hands.

His iwi (tribe) are Ngāti Porou in Tai Rāwhiti (the East Coast) of Aotearoa New Zealand’s Te Ika-a-Māui (North Island). Originally from Te Araroa in the Gisbourne Region, Ngahiwi is now based in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. Ngahiwi works mostly with macrocarpa and occasionally NZ tōtara. He hand-carves each piece, creating a charcoal effect with a blow torch and finishing with a bristled brush. Every pou tells a story in the Māori wood carving and the moko (tattoo), some tales and memories passed down by elders, others speaking to the mana (spiritual energy/standing) of men and women and their position within the iwi (tribe) and hapu (community). Ngahiwi began carving in 2003 to help someone he knew who had undergone a traumatic experience. He wanted to do something for them so he carved a pou. The family was taken away by it and very grateful. My first carvings were gifts for family members whose lives had been affected in some way by death or birth. Since then, I have been carving stories that I remember from way back. Ngahiwi’s contemporary Māori art is in high demand, often carved on commission. Pieces that do come into the gallery are gratefully received as they contribute much to the wairua (spirit) of our space but they are rarely with us long.

In his pop art, Christian has the unique ability to capture memory in a way that is both nostalgic and joyful. His style is at times subtle, comical, and personal, compared with other pop art that may be more cliched or appropriative. Meanwhile, his landscape paintings evoke feelings of joy and freedom, celebrating Aotearoa New Zealand's incredible surfing beaches. Speaking to his love of the great outdoors, Christian’s surfing and contemporary beach painting comes from his own experiences exploring Aotearoa’s coast lines in the North and South Islands. His abstract modern art paintings and sculptures are inspired by his childhood memories, film and music media of different decades, and festivals and famous people from the past. Christian's artwork touches the nostalgia nerve within a wide variety of ages, inviting us to remember the golden years in all their glory. I like to be creative in as many ways as possible. Whatever it is to get across my idea and explore what I am doing. I make sculptures. I do large installations in the landscape. I use photography, paint, screen printing, have a rock band, I make videos and film. This is the way I want to continue. I pride myself in doing different things. Christian has a diploma in design (Visual Communications) from Unitec in Auckland. He worked as a designer directing ads, magazines, and logos for several years before leaving that work to follow his dream and become a full-time artist. For a conceptual artwork, Christian begins with idea and composition. He then searches for hours for the type of images that will support this composition. Mostly they are a mix of images taken from online and his own drawings. He then uses a coarse screen (like the old fashioned newspaper screen of 60 dots per inch) to transpose the image over his painting technique. This process is reminiscent of comic book artworks from the 60's and 70's. Actual painting starts in the beginning and is applied throughout the entire process. The final piece of pop art contains layers upon layers of painting, design, and screen printing, often with some oil pastel stick as the final layer. Christian continues to be remembered for some of his more daring artistic endeavours. This includes his “Toetoe” installation series placed in several iconic Auckland locations, including in Auckland City Harbour (with the tide coming in!). Today, alongside his contemporary art followers, collectors, and investors, Christian has a small fanbase as a result of his feature film, This Papier Mache Boulder is Actually Really Heavy (2016), for which he won a number of international film festival awards. Christian has been represented by Art by the Sea Gallery since 2006. He is a prolific artist and has had many, highly successful exhibitions in our gallery. He has also appeared in public exhibitions and sculpture symposiums across the country. Christian has produced art on commission and continues to be available for such work. His work is held in many private collections, including the Wallace Trust which has over 40 of his pieces. Art for me is a passion. Sometimes pure instinct, sometimes quite structured, but usually it’s a fairly organic process. It makes me feel good to express myself. And it’s great to be able to share that with others. Thank you for the love. See inside Christian's studio >

Mary specialises in limited edition NZ fine prints and original paintings of birds and flowers. She is especially passionate about native NZ bird art and NZ flora and botanicals, as evidenced in her etchings of kōwhai flowers, NZ rata, nīkau palms, little ruru, kererū (NZ woodpigeon), and tūi, to name a few. Mary’s fine art prints (NZ) and original paintings draw inspiration and subject matter from New Zealand's urban and bush life, from unique flora and native birds to cityscapes, beach and seascapes, and pristine wildernesses. Her style can be described as rich, meticulous, rhythmic, and celebratory, while always grounded in realism. Mary’s etchings are a time-consuming and manual process following a traditional method of hand drawing on Zinc plates—acid etching followed by aqua-tinting or hand-colouring. Clients especially appreciate the individual hand-colouring watercolour art, meaning that each print has its own, unique quality. Today, Mary’s original nature painting is also gaining popularity, loved for their illustrative style and the luminous quality she draws from the paint. Formerly a teacher, Mary has worked as a fulltime, professional artist since 1983. The major part of her time is devoted to her etchings and original paintings. She has also been known to write and illustrate books. Her book Old Blue: The Rarest Bird in the World (Ashton Scholastic, 1993) documented the story of DOC conservationists saving the Chatham Islands robin from the brink of extinction to great reviews, winning the AIM non-fiction award in 1994. Mary lives in a wilderness of exceptional beauty with lush bush and rugged coastlines. Her wildlife art is created in a studio surrounded by native forest and regularly travels throughout New Zealand seeking subject matter for her work. Mary’s work is held in private collections in New Zealand and internationally.

His figurative work ranges from vibrant paintings of women in circus and steampunk dress to sunny beach and garden scenes to softly painted nudes. He has won awards for his fine art portrait painting and been commissioned by a number of well-known organisations. Of his circus paintings, Paul said: These paintings reflect our two worlds, the exterior and interior, the seen and unseen. The effects of our surroundings on our inner essence. Paul is drawn by the inherent strength he finds in people while quietly observing their face and form. He favours a loose brush style with the work evolving on the canvas as he paints, and as he deepens his understanding of the subject. Character imperfections appeal to him and he balances his attempts to capture the essence of poses in the human figure with an interest in the life experienced by the individual person. Paul paints intuitively, through perception, and only uses photographs as a reference tool. Influenced by the American artist Alex Kanevsky, Paul’s figurative work is often given movement and atmosphere through his use of abstract backgrounds. Paul also paints the occasional captivating New Zealand landscape and still life. His interest in landscapes focuses on the extended vistas and rolling hills of the North Island, capturing the NZ summer with a finely tuned sense of light and atmosphere. His intimate still life renditions exploit the contrasting qualities of surface and light reflection, their detail and composition speaking to his senior experience in the craft. Paul has enjoyed a career as an exhibiting painter, professional illustrator and tertiary lecturer in Auckland for more than forty years. In the seventies and early eighties he had an extensive career in illustration, working in several of the top Auckland advertising agencies. He tutored part-time at a number of tertiary institutions, including Whitecliff College of Art, for over twenty years. He has said that teaching life drawing, fashion, and figure studies encouraged him to constantly perfect his own technique. Paul has completed a variety of significant private commissions including oil portraits of all of the America's Cup Skippers, and a series of three portraits for Kings College in Auckland. He has been a finalist in the Adam Portraiture Awards no fewer than six times and, in 2004, he was commissioned to design and illustrate six stamps and two first day cover motifs for the Christmas Stamps for NZ Post. Now retired from teaching, Paul is painting full time. His portrait art painting is collected both nationally and internationally.

He is known for his large NZ landscape paintings capturing different regions and seasons in Central Otago including mountain paintings and paintings of NZ rivers South Island. During his fine arts degree at Ilam, University of Canterbury, Nigel was tutored by Don Pebbles. Since then, he has exhibited regularly, winning a number of painting awards, and has nearly 30 solo exhibitions to his name. In a statement following one of Nigel’s exhibitions, an art critic said: Nigel Wilson's work captures the raw, natural beauty and distinct character of New Zealand's southern landscapes through expressive, impassioned brushwork and vibrant, descriptive colour. From a distance, Wilson's works provide an imposing scene, but up close, they are even more arresting. Oil paint has been applied with variety, energy and certainty, with each stoke having a compelling autonomy. Colour, form, and linear relationships are important to me with a particular place, event or significant person suggested in the composition. "To thine own self be true" has remained a guiding principal and this allows some personal issues and occasional problems to be resolved as each painting develops. My best advice to an aspiring artist would be to follow your thoughts when it comes to painting. Nigel grew up in Wellington before moving to the South Island. He became a full time artist after leaving a teaching profession at Cargill High School, Invercargill, in 1997. He moved to Alexandra in the year 2000 where he continued to boldly paint the Otago landscape. He was appointed president of the Central Otago Art Society in 2008 and again in 2009. Nigel and his New Zealand landscape art is well represented in public and private collections throughout New Zealand.

The beauty and vitality of New Zealand’s bush, river, and coastal environments are well-represented in Sarah’s art. The physical size of her long thin New Zealand landscape art - and the drama of the work - lead us on a grand journey over land, sky, and sea. I am well-known for my use of unusually long canvases—more than six times as long as they are high. I first used this format in 1998, and I have been surprised at the enthusiasm with which it has been welcomed by collectors. The width enhances the sense of space within the frame; but I believe it also stretches the imagination, and infers the idea of the landscape extending beyond the edges of the canvas. Originally from Whangarei, Sarah grew up in Rotorua and Cambridge. She went through formal art school education in Christchurch in the 1970s. After graduating from Canterbury University School of Fine Arts and Christchurch Teachers College she taught art and art history at schools in Whangarei, and later at Kaipara College in Helensville. Sarah has worked as a full time painter since 1995, regularly exhibiting in groups or solo shows. In 2007, she exhibited in the Biennale Internazionale dell' Arte Contemporanea in Florence. Her paintings of NZ are in private and public collections in this country and overseas, including the prestigious Barilla collection of Modern Art in Italy (which also holds work by Pablo Picasso, Francis Bacon, Henry Moore and Max Ernst.

Nicky is known for her large New Zealand landscapes of the South Island, showing mountains, rivers, and lakes. Many of her paintings feature native NZ bird art and intricately detailed lace veils or tapa cloth. Experienced in the use of both oil and acrylic paints, Nicky draws from her own intimate experience of the New Zealand landscape as gained during her many hikes and trips around the South Island with her partner, Mike. I like to think my work evokes a peaceful and restful feeling. I love to capture a moment in time, when for a split second you stop and almost feed on something that slows your breath. Nature has lent me these moments. Inspiration for my work comes from my love of our surroundings that we are so privileged to have. On the depiction of lace and tapa cloth in her paintings, Nicky has said that for her it is about the movement the fabric lends to the work and the stories each piece tells. Lace patterns have histories in European culture, just as tapa cloth contains stories that speak to cultural identities and histories in the Pacific. My work has a common theme of our native birds, their diverse nests and feathers, combined with layers of fragile voile lace and highly tropical patterned fabrics intertwined with crisp glass vessels or placed with naïve, organic shaped urns. Movement is created with a wispy breeze playing through the fabrics and allowing a feather or two to float gently across, often coming to rest on a delicate flower—a quiet, peaceful time. Sometimes I use tapa cloth with its illustrated stories. I mix acrylic, oils, conte sticks, oil pastel, and resin together to create this feeling of quiet tranquillity. A private moment suspended in time with paint forever. Nicky studied graphic design at Auckland Institute of Technology and worked for an advertising agency for a number of years before taking a job with Finished Artist Auckland Type Setters in the mid-80s. She worked on private and commercial commissions in her spare time, including murals for children’s rooms (many featured in the NZ House and Garden magazine and the Herald newspaper). She also completed a large commission for Starbucks and another for the Belgium Beer House Restaurant. Nicky began working as a full-time painter in 2005 with her first solo NZ landscape art exhibition held at Art by the Sea in 2007. She has had a number of solo exhibitions since and participated in many group shows through Art by the Sea.

His works are often large—depicting, for instance, a life-size antlered stag head—with intricate details, such as laser-cut fantail shapes or a metal huia bird skull. Sean’s artistic range includes: stainless steel garden art NZ cut into contemporary life-size animal sculptures; novel indoor and outdoor wall art NZ inspired by what he calls the ‘Pacific Modern’; and ecological art artistically exploring NZ landscapes and history in meticulous, multimedia detail. The sources of his inspiration are just as varied - the Wairarapa bush or the vibrant cultures of Central America; the woodworking techniques he learned from his boat builder father; the contradictions of New Zealand’s colonial past; the stories of Edgar Allen Poe and the paintings of Bill Hammond. Having grown up in Wellington, Sean is now based in rural Carterton, where his studio looks out over the foothills of the Tararua mountain range. Art and the great outdoors were features of Sean’s childhood. He could draw before he could walk (or so the family story goes!). Holidaying in the Wairarapa, Sean spent his summer helping out on local farms with livestock and pest control. Sean’s first trade as a plumber taught him to think and create in three dimensions. After his apprenticeship, he spent five years traveling overseas, returning home with a renewed passion for art and design. He graduated with a Bachelor of Design in 2003, and has been a full-time sculptor ever since. One of the highlights of Crawford’s career to date was the 2015 commissioned sculpture ‘Waiting for Hammond’, a two metre tall Huia bird set on a headland overlooking the Irish Sea in Cork. It’s a sign that his ideas, although largely home-grown, are just as relevant on the world stage.

Dean Raybould New Zealand Creative Activism Dean Raybould is a contemporary NZ artist based in Oamaru. His contemporary oil paintings, overwritten with clever wordplay, present recurring themes of New Zealand land formations, histories, and social and ecological politics, all firmly grounded in an inimitable "tongue-in-cheek" style. More > ! Bio Dean Raybould is a New Zealand contemporary artist based in Oamaru in the South Island of New Zealand. Dean’s New Zealand contemporary art is highly illustrative, dream-like, and somewhat surreal with recurring themes of New Zealand land formations, social and ecological politics, and native NZ bird art, all firmly grounded in an inimitable "tongue-in-cheek" style. Through illustration and wordplay, Dean’s artworks offer a humorous yet meaningful take on social justice issues, environmental rights, national identity, conservation, and questions of human existence. In this, Dean's art might be acknowledged using political art terminology such as artivism, protest art , and art activism. As ecological art or wildlife art, conservation issues are symbolised in our most famous extinct bird, the huia, which appears in most if not all of Dean’s paintings, sometimes personified. Many of Dean's NZ art pieces also draw from popular and historical culture. In some NZ landscape paintings we might spot a Millenium Falcon or the Owl and the Pussycat, while others act as irreverent tributes to David Bowie, Doctor Who, Shakespeare, and James K. Baxter. Art can be seen as an unconscious search for an authentic self, and here searching is the main narrative thread. Stringing loosely together universal questions of belonging and identity—national and cultural, personal and spiritual—or joining knotty contemporary realities with humanity's hardwired hunt for a tribal hearth. Salient searches that are often unresolved like the ambiguities portrayed in these works. Dean paints in oil on a variety of mediums, including large canvas sheets or cut-out boards and recycled materials such as headboards, guitars, and old cellos. Whether on canvas or found objects, Dean’s paintings are woven with social, political, and environmental commentary. This writing appears not only in the titles of the works but delicately worked into the paintings themselves. There is wit, quirky humour, and deliberate ambiguity in Dean’s wordplay. We could spend hours travelling through a single piece, noting the multiple meanings suggested by each lyric and image. His paintings of NZ are collected for this lyrical and often humorous takes on important national issues. The interplay of words, land formations, birds, and patterns all combine to create a mystical, dream-like trance of finely executed treasures. As Dean only paints a few pieces a year, his work is sought-after. His pieces are held in private collections nationwide with some available to see in public galleries and outdoor spaces.
