His figurative work ranges from vibrant paintings of women in circus and steampunk dress to sunny beach and garden scenes to softly painted nudes. He has won awards for his fine art portrait painting and been commissioned by a number of well-known organisations. Of his circus paintings, Paul said: These paintings reflect our two worlds, the exterior and interior, the seen and unseen. The effects of our surroundings on our inner essence. Paul is drawn by the inherent strength he finds in people while quietly observing their face and form. He favours a loose brush style with the work evolving on the canvas as he paints, and as he deepens his understanding of the subject. Character imperfections appeal to him and he balances his attempts to capture the essence of poses in the human figure with an interest in the life experienced by the individual person. Paul paints intuitively, through perception, and only uses photographs as a reference tool. Influenced by the American artist Alex Kanevsky, Paul’s figurative work is often given movement and atmosphere through his use of abstract backgrounds. Paul also paints the occasional captivating New Zealand landscape and still life. His interest in landscapes focuses on the extended vistas and rolling hills of the North Island, capturing the NZ summer with a finely tuned sense of light and atmosphere. His intimate still life renditions exploit the contrasting qualities of surface and light reflection, their detail and composition speaking to his senior experience in the craft. Paul has enjoyed a career as an exhibiting painter, professional illustrator and tertiary lecturer in Auckland for more than forty years. In the seventies and early eighties he had an extensive career in illustration, working in several of the top Auckland advertising agencies. He tutored part-time at a number of tertiary institutions, including Whitecliff College of Art, for over twenty years. He has said that teaching life drawing, fashion, and figure studies encouraged him to constantly perfect his own technique. Paul has completed a variety of significant private commissions including oil portraits of all of the America's Cup Skippers, and a series of three portraits for Kings College in Auckland. He has been a finalist in the Adam Portraiture Awards no fewer than six times and, in 2004, he was commissioned to design and illustrate six stamps and two first day cover motifs for the Christmas Stamps for NZ Post. Now retired from teaching, Paul is painting full time. His portrait art painting is collected both nationally and internationally.

The exhibition was sponsored by Milford Shopping Centre and curated by Art by the Sea. Free guided tours of the trail were offered by Art by the Sea staff in small groups every 15 minutes for the duration of the show. Pōwhiri The event opened with a pōwhiri hosted by artist Ngahiwi Walker (Ngāti Porou). He acknowledged the kaupapa of the event: to fundraise and raise awareness for the I Am Hope foundation. Pou by Ngahiwi Walker (left) Walker's five pou show a kaumatua, a kuia, male and female leaders, and mokopuna. The staff and owners of Art by the Sea Gallery, and the artists whose mahi toi were exhibited in this show, were proud to offer their valuable work and time to support this important cause. Te Koha October 2017 This exhibition was held in support of the Key to Life Charitable Trust and their I Am Hope campaign, raising awareness and funds for youth mental health and suicide prevention. We are hugely grateful to the artists and poets who contributed their incredible mahi to this event and cause. He paints intuitively, rarely using preparatory sketches but instead allowing the work to take shape organically. A key focus for Carl is achieving balance in line, tone, colour, and overall composition. The incredibly precise lines and 3-dimensional shapes in Carl’s abstract fine art comes from his industry background in sign writing with a specialty in pin-striping for Hot Rods—a trade he learnt from his father. His artistic influences include cubists and impressionists such as Vincent Van Gogh, Wes Freed, Wifredo Lam, and Jean Michel Basquiat. Carl’s passion is the outdoors and interpreting the many varied people and experiences that colour his life. Some of his landscape scenes and NZ beach art have been painted en plein air in and around the west coast beaches of Auckland. Each of Carl’s geometric modern art paintings is meticulously and painstakingly hand-painted and then sealed with a final protective varnish. Symbols and intersecting planes suggest a way into deciphering his paintings, but the real beauty lies in discovering something new every time you look them.

These garden sculptures NZ are sturdy and highly unique, each piece individually hand-crafted and made to age well in the elements. What began as a hobby turned into a business in the year 2000 when the artists were asked to make a life-size pregnant cow out of corrugated iron. This sculpture launched a metal art New Zealand business and the name “Rustic Twist” evolved out of that. While the lamb, medium sheep, and angora metal goat are the most popular, Art by the Sea has also hosted several life-size metal lamas, wild boars, the occasional peacock, and a giant cactus. We have also transported a life-size Friesian cow to Southland, and hosted a one-off flock of sheep art installation piece for the Milford Centre Sculpture Trail (2020) in support of the Key to Life Trust. All of Rustic Twist animals are made from recycled metal on a steel frame. The large animals, like the sheep and goats, are handmade from recycled corrugated iron roofing. Some of the smaller bird sculptures are made using repurposed sawblades or pieces cut out of old copper hot water cylinders and then assembled by hand. All sculptures are made to order, so please contact us at least three weeks in advance of the date the artwork is required. We regularly arrange international shipping for these pieces; please contact us for a quote.

He is married to Sherie Kemp and they have three sons. He was born in Ōtautahi Christchurch and moved to the Bay of Plenty when he was two. His iwi (tribal connections) are Ngāi Tahu, Ngāpuhi, and Te Arawa (Ngāti Mākino). Every time I start carving an old bit of wood I am always reminded of the tree it once was, and how it lived for centuries before it became the piece of wood I'm carving. As l start carving more into the piece I get a sense l am being directed with my chisels from the grains and natural flows of the wood. As the pieces evolve into form, I feel like they are old ancient relics from another time and l get to take the layer of overgrowth from them to reveal an old life force that once lived in Te Waonui O Tanemahuta (our ancient forest). A time forgotten . . . Joe is self-taught and works primarily in wood as his chosen medium. He enjoys the “secrets and surprises” that New Zealand native trees have within them. Joe’s standing and wall sculptures (NZ), or wall masks, depict human forms and faces emerging out of the wood. He has said that he feels the human form connects him with his ancestral history, bringing new meaning and purpose to the finished work. I sense a connection with Tane Mahuta (the life force of the tree) as I'm working with the wood, so it is quite a special feeling. I also carve a variety of stone, where again there is a connection with Papatuanuku (Earth Mother). I look to bring out the Wairua (essence) in each piece, starting from where the material originated and using any special features and grains in the stone and wood. Joe has over 20 years’ experience as a sculptor. He has participated in sculpture symposiums around the country, most notably at the Lake House Wood Sculpture Live symposium where he won first prize in 2012 and 2013. His work has evolved into the style and form we see today, drawing together traditional Māori carving with contemporary styles and cross-cultural influences (as we see in the Viking-like helmets on some pieces), allowing him to form his own, unique brand of contemporary Māori art. Joe's Māori wood carving is strong in wairua (spirit). They have a presence. We feel they protect our gallery space and offer something to our local community - we often speak with customers who tell us they believe the sculptures drew them into our store. [Today], I have a deeper understanding and respect for my work and the mediums I use which helps me connect to the wairua within. My work depicts new beginnings in a new world, with presence of Kaitiakitanga (Guardianship), Amorangi (Leadership), Mana (prestige, self-worth), kaha (strength), hope, and purpose.

Since then, he has exhibited regularly, winning a number of painting awards, and has nearly 30 solo exhibitions to his name. In a statement following one of Nigel’s exhibitions, an art critic said: Nigel Wilson's work captures the raw, natural beauty and distinct character of New Zealand's southern landscapes through expressive, impassioned brushwork and vibrant, descriptive colour. From a distance, Wilson's works provide an imposing scene, but up close, they are even more arresting. Oil paint has been applied with variety, energy and certainty, with each stoke having a compelling autonomy. Nigel grew up in Wellington before moving to the South Island. He became a full time artist after leaving a teaching profession at Cargill High School, Invercargill, in 1997. He moved to Alexandra in the year 2000 where he continued to boldly paint the Otago landscape. He was appointed president of the Central Otago Art Society in 2008 and again in 2009. Mary specialises in limited edition NZ fine prints and original paintings of birds and flowers. She is especially passionate about native NZ bird art and NZ flora and botanicals, as evidenced in her etchings of kōwhai flowers, NZ rata, nīkau palms, little ruru, kererū (NZ woodpigeon), and tūi, to name a few. Mary’s fine art prints (NZ) and original paintings draw inspiration and subject matter from New Zealand's urban and bush life, from unique flora and native birds to cityscapes, beach and seascapes, and pristine wildernesses. Her style can be described as rich, meticulous, rhythmic, and celebratory, while always grounded in realism. Mary’s etchings are a time-consuming and manual process following a traditional method of hand drawing on Zinc plates—acid etching followed by aqua-tinting or hand-colouring. Clients especially appreciate the individual hand-colouring watercolour art, meaning that each print has its own, unique quality. Today, Mary’s original nature painting is also gaining popularity, loved for their illustrative style and the luminous quality she draws from the paint. Formerly a teacher, Mary has worked as a fulltime, professional artist since 1983. The major part of her time is devoted to her etchings and original paintings. She has also been known to write and illustrate books. Her book Old Blue: The Rarest Bird in the World (Ashton Scholastic, 1993) documented the story of DOC conservationists saving the Chatham Islands robin from the brink of extinction to great reviews, winning the AIM non-fiction award in 1994. Mary lives in a wilderness of exceptional beauty with lush bush and rugged coastlines. Her wildlife art is created in a studio surrounded by native forest and regularly travels throughout New Zealand seeking subject matter for her work. Mary’s work is held in private collections in New Zealand and internationally.

Her landscapes, skyscapes, and urban scenes capture passing moments that have struck her while out travelling or hiking—a small red barn in a hay field, a complex cloud formation, bright red tomatoes spilling out of a wooden crate, a perfectly still and reflective lake. Landscapes have continually changing aspects and I enjoy working with the fluid motion this engenders. The sky plays an important role in the landscapes I paint, its vastness and expressiveness is a constant source of inspiration. Holly began painting at an early age and attended several years of portrait painting workshops and untutored still life painting sessions. She works mainly in strongly pigmented oils, enjoying the depth of colour, vibrancy, and texture offered by this medium. Her work has been further enhanced by attending courses at an Atelier in Edinburgh where she refined her skills in classical and traditional realistic oil painting and returned to New Zealand with a stunning selection of paintings of Europe. My main inspirations for painting are light, colour and atmosphere. I aim to use these elements as a means of creating an integral connection with the subject. Growing up in New Zealand surrounded by natural beauty, has inspired in Holly a passion for expressing sky and light on the canvas. The sky takes on a special significance and its vast and ever-changing nature is an inspiring subject matter for Holly’s work. New Zealand landscapes continue to influence her alongside the Scottish and European historical architecture and scenery that has brought to light new creative possibilities. Whether the moody atmosphere of a misty sound, or a Parisian windowsill with fluttering gauze curtain, Holly’s paintings open a door into a different time and place, one that may speak to us in its familiarity, or offer an imaginative escape.

Rosemary Eagles is an established contemporary abstract artist known for her paintings capturing the natural beauty of this country's vibrant plant life and stunning land, sky, and coastal environments. Her abstract landscape art has been described by collectors as both “peaceful and serene, vibrant and unique, or reminiscent of places visited.” She is especially known for her eye-catching paintings of NZ mānuka trees. Standing open and exposed are the Manuka trees, creating a line against the horizon. They are strong, durable and resilient against the harsh elements that batter them. Native Manuka plants offer multiple benefits to both the environment and humanity. These Manuka trees are the original source for our precious Manuka honey, Manuka oil, as well as being perfect for ecological restoration. Rosemary’s paintings of NZ are marked by her unrestrained use of colour and texture, testifying to her skill as an artist, her knowledge of different unique natural environments, and her industry experience in interior design and textiles. After excelling in art at school, Rosemary completed an Interior Design Diploma at Whitecliffe School of Art and Design in 1991. In 1996, Rosemary travelled extensively through the Middle East where countries such as Syria and Morocco exposed her to a completely different cultural and colourful environment, compared to the lush, fertile greens of New Zealand’s North Island. She went on to work as a textile importer where her contact with American and Indian textiles and fabrics increased her awareness of different substrates and textures, and stimulated her to pursue an earlier passion for oil painting. Rosemary finds moments of inspiration during family trips and hikes around New Zealand, especially when holidaying in the Coromandel or on daytrips up to Tāwharanui beach and conservation reserve. Tāwharanui Regional Park is located on the eastern end of Tokatu Peninsula which extends into the Hauraki Gulf just north of Kawau Island. In my mind this has always been a place of incredible beauty where rolling land meets the sea, with stunning beaches in every direction. Our family treasures this sacred piece of land which is simply idyllic. Rosemary has had over 12 exhibitions at Art by the Sea. Her earlier, bold fruit and flower paintings gave way to earthy terrains and strata, moody skies, and evocative horizons. Today, we see a lighter, uplifting colour palette in her nature painting with spring flowers, native ferns and flax, mānuka trees lit by touches of gold, and skilled expressions of New Zealand’s atmospheric coastal landscapes. Listen to Rosemary talk about her work in this 2022 episode of the Creative Matters podcast .

Dean Raybould New Zealand Creative Activism Dean Raybould is a contemporary NZ artist based in Oamaru. Dean’s New Zealand contemporary art is highly illustrative, dream-like, and somewhat surreal with recurring themes of New Zealand land formations, social and ecological politics, and native NZ bird art, all firmly grounded in an inimitable "tongue-in-cheek" style. Through illustration and wordplay, Dean’s artworks offer a humorous yet meaningful take on social justice issues, environmental rights, national identity, conservation, and questions of human existence. In this, Dean's art might be acknowledged using political art terminology such as artivism, protest art , and art activism. As ecological art or wildlife art, conservation issues are symbolised in our most famous extinct bird, the huia, which appears in most if not all of Dean’s paintings, sometimes personified. Many of Dean's NZ art pieces also draw from popular and historical culture. In some NZ landscape paintings we might spot a Millenium Falcon or the Owl and the Pussycat, while others act as irreverent tributes to David Bowie, Doctor Who, Shakespeare, and James K. Baxter. Art can be seen as an unconscious search for an authentic self, and here searching is the main narrative thread. Stringing loosely together universal questions of belonging and identity—national and cultural, personal and spiritual—or joining knotty contemporary realities with humanity's hardwired hunt for a tribal hearth. Salient searches that are often unresolved like the ambiguities portrayed in these works. Dean paints in oil on a variety of mediums, including large canvas sheets or cut-out boards and recycled materials such as headboards, guitars, and old cellos. Whether on canvas or found objects, Dean’s paintings are woven with social, political, and environmental commentary. This writing appears not only in the titles of the works but delicately worked into the paintings themselves. There is wit, quirky humour, and deliberate ambiguity in Dean’s wordplay. We could spend hours travelling through a single piece, noting the multiple meanings suggested by each lyric and image. His paintings of NZ are collected for this lyrical and often humorous takes on important national issues. The interplay of words, land formations, birds, and patterns all combine to create a mystical, dream-like trance of finely executed treasures. As Dean only paints a few pieces a year, his work is sought-after. His pieces are held in private collections nationwide with some available to see in public galleries and outdoor spaces.

Find Contemporary NZ artists and glass masters at Art by the Sea Gallery. Her broad skill base of glass art (NZ) includes (but is not limited to) cast glass, kilnforming, glass slumping, and flameworking or lampworking. She’s particularly known for her incredible glass sculptures inspired by her time travelling across Africa. Jo’s background includes equal parts science and the arts with glasswork offering a happy marriage of both. She has two apprenticeships in Medical Laboratory Technology, gained during the mid-80s, and believes a seed of interest in glasswork was apparent even back then. I got to play with test tubes, petri dishes, glass slides and pipettes—measuring and mixing liquids and chemicals, and spending a lot of time looking down a microscope! Jo also holds a degree in English and Linguistics and certificates in English language teaching and graphic design. She traces her passion for glass artistry to a mosaic conference in Hobart, Tasmania. There, she saw a presentation by a sculptor who made life-sized birds with kilnformed glass feathers. She was “fascinated and hooked” by the intricacy of the birds, each with a wingspan of 5 metres. Jo now makes her own glass birds (NZ), with intricate carved patterning. Glass encompasses my love of science and art—it is the junction where both loves meet! Jo has completed numerous master classes in kilnforming and flameworking, learning from both local and international glass artists. Her incredible Naisiae (pronounced “nay-zee) sculpture is a life-size glass representation of a shuka (type of sarong) worn by Maasai women on the East Coast of Africa. This piece would be an outstanding showpiece in any art glass collection.
