A finalist in NZ’s Geographic Photographer of the Year Award (2017), Michelle’s professionalism and mastery of the camera and lens provide viewers with a different perspective of New Zealand's unique landscapes. He is drawn to details and textures, relishing the moments when he becomes engrossed in a subject and can envision the finished photograph. Largely self-taught, Jonathan’s style is influenced by Ansel Adams and the American West Coast movement of the middle 1900’s. Jonathan studied engineering science at Oxford University and enjoyed success at its photographic society. After losing both his parents to cancer, Jonathan emigrated to New Zealand where he met and fell in love with his now wife Julie. It was Julie who encouraged Jonathan to pursue his passion for photography. In Jonathan’s black and white photography process, the initial camera exposure is followed by what he terms an interpretation stage . Originally done in the darkroom, he now manages this on his computer with a stylus (tablet pen). He adjusts overall brightnesses, colours, and contrasts with a slow and subtle build-up of effect (called dodging and burning), taking hours or days on each photograph. This is the part of the process he loves the most. Before 2022, Jonathan's camera of choice was a Large Format Field View Camera made by the British firm Gandolfi. Resembling the plate cameras from history, this camera is made largely from wood and has a bellows. Every time he removed the camera from his backpack, Jonathan would marvel at its beauty. He would crouch under a dark cloth to focus and set up the shot. Exposures could take an hour or more. Jonathan was once asked by a young boy if he had a proper camera hidden inside, or was the outside just for show? In late 2022, in a big change, he began using two old digital cameras, one by Fujifilm and the other Leica. Whilst retaining his philosophy of making every shot count, the newer cameras offered freedom and spontaneity. Jonathan continues to create fine art photography, now with a contemporary approach in his attention to details and textures. He has a collection of photographic art at Art by the Sea Gallery and his work is found in private collections nationwide.

However, the thrill of bringing it all together on a canvas can be nearly as exciting as having been there. Alan Sanders is NZ artist and oil painter specialising in ocean art paintings, seascapes, and sailing ship art. His large oil paintings of ships at sea feature traditional sailing windjammers are highly detailed and evoke the atmosphere and adventure of another era, while his racing and classic yachts capture the joy and excitement of water sports today. Alan is especially interested in the stories behind the vessels he paints. His large clipper ships, in particular, remind us of the significance of the sailing vessel as an essential part of New Zealand’s and Australia’s early history. These ships carry the stories of officers and sailors who braved the elements to bring pioneering men, women, and children to a new life in the Antipodes—“stories of courage, hardship and seamanship.” The ships that came to New Zealand and Australia had appropriate names like: Marlborough, Waimate, Waitangi, Invercargill, Waikato, and are an important part of the New Zealand story. Alan has been inspired by watercolourist J. Spurling, who illustrated a number of books on clipper ships written by Basil Lubbock. These great illustrations capture the many ships that plied the waters between the UK, New Zealand and Australia with wonderful stories that tell their histories and final fates. Nearly all of Spurling's original illustrations were lost during the blitz of London in World War 2, but Alan has used some of the smaller illustrations as a starting point for his large oil paintings. I have painted them in a much looser and atmospheric style, with my own interpretation of the sea and skies, to appeal to a more contemporary market. Currently based in Auckland, Alan's former career was in the graphic design and advertising industry. He is a life member of the Designers Institute of New Zealand (DINZ) and a founding committee member of the 'Best' Graphic Design Awards. Alan retired from the design industry and is now able to concentrate on his main love of nautical canvas art.

The beauty and vitality of New Zealand’s bush, river, and coastal environments are well-represented in Sarah’s art. The physical size of her long thin New Zealand landscape art - and the drama of the work - lead us on a grand journey over land, sky, and sea. I am well-known for my use of unusually long canvases—more than six times as long as they are high. I first used this format in 1998, and I have been surprised at the enthusiasm with which it has been welcomed by collectors. The width enhances the sense of space within the frame; but I believe it also stretches the imagination, and infers the idea of the landscape extending beyond the edges of the canvas. Originally from Whangarei, Sarah grew up in Rotorua and Cambridge. She went through formal art school education in Christchurch in the 1970s. After graduating from Canterbury University School of Fine Arts and Christchurch Teachers College she taught art and art history at schools in Whangarei, and later at Kaipara College in Helensville. Sarah has worked as a full time painter since 1995, regularly exhibiting in groups or solo shows. In 2007, she exhibited in the Biennale Internazionale dell' Arte Contemporanea in Florence. Her paintings of NZ are in private and public collections in this country and overseas, including the prestigious Barilla collection of Modern Art in Italy (which also holds work by Pablo Picasso, Francis Bacon, Henry Moore and Max Ernst.

Bio David Jones is an experienced New Zealand portrait artist originally from Wellington. He works on commission and has completed private portraits for a number of notable New Zealanders. While oil portraiture is the main avenue for his art, David also occasionally presents highly detailed still life painting for sale at Art by the Sea. In these paintings, David chooses simple, often unnoticed, items from everyday life. David is a self-taught oil painter and draughtsman. In his approach to fine art portrait painting, he views the whole picture first as a construction of abstract qualities—colour, shape, tone—on the picture plane in order to communicate an overall sense, rather than to focus on a single subject or object. He uses representation to draw the viewer into the poetic world of the painting. In creating this believable world, he encourages us to look beyond the objective, towards the subjective inner workings of the mind. David has spent much of his time studying traditional painting, from the renaissance to the early 20th century, and this knowledge underpins his work. He has worked as a painting and drawing tutor, and he has work in the Wallace Art Collection. He has been selected to exhibit in the Adam Portrait Awards three times and has been a finalist twice, including with his Portrait of Esther Deans. Pictured left is his self-portrait.

  • Lindsay Crooks Artist of the People, Contemporary Beach Oil Painter | Art by the Sea Gallery

Lindsay Crooks paintings sale. Colourful paintings by New Zealand artist Lindsay Crooks, oil painter and "artist of the people," who was beloved in Dunedin for his joyous kiwi beach scenes NZ. Find affordable art to invest in for your personal art collection at Art by the Sea Gallery. Lindsay Crooks The Art of Everyday Life Lindsay Crooks (1957–2005) was a nationally renowned fine artist and oil painter based in Dunedin, New Zealand. Known for his figurative work and nz beach art, Lindsay worked in bright, colourful oils and pastels. More > ! Bio I like to paint things going on around me. I don’t use photographs; everything’s based on what I’ve seen. Lindsay Crooks was an iconic fine artist based in Brighton, Dunedin. He was known for his bright, colourful paintings of happy beach scenes (NZ) and people enjoying typical New Zealand outdoor activities like surfing, fishing, and gardening. Around Dunedin and nationally, Lindsay was known as an ‘artist of the people.’ The following are excerpts taken from poet David Eggleton’s introduction to the book Venus on a Beach Towel (Longacre Press, 2003) about Lindsay and his art: A teacher of life drawing for twenty years, Lindsay Crooks' main subject as an artist is the human figure. His people are buoyant, jolly, life-affirming figures - their chunky body shapes worked into careful compositions which celebrate ordinary things, ordinary pleasures and the everyday world. Lindsay Crooks paints life as a kind of incessant activity. His paintings are full of movement. Figures walk with a rolling sailor's gait, or they dance, flex, stride, saunter, or they hurtle along on bicycles, dive down to seabeds and engage in frenetic beach activities… He explores the human comedy of domestic life and invests the small objects of daily life with both simple magic and comic dignity… He notices things: steam from a kettle, a cat curled up, a vase of flowers, the way snow fluoresces, the ocean view through an open door. Perhaps the primal site for Crook's studies of the figure is the beachscape… In a typical beach painting […] we will see children running towards the water, which will be alive with surfers and swimmers. Family groups will be picnicking. Teenagers gambol and frolic. The figures are solid, anchored, grounded. They grow out of the spaces they inhabit, indeed, they may be almost submerged in their surroundings: semi-transparent, camouflaged. And there is, as always, the signature knack for balanced colours and shapes—of sand tones and sea tones, of boardriders and sandsitters. Things happen in a blaze of light. Lindsay sadly passed away in 2005 after an 8-month battle with cancer. He is sorely missed. Lindsay was represented by Art by the Sea Gallery for over five years and we developed a close relationship with him. We have a list of Lindsay’s works that have come from personal art collections and that we are selling on behalf of our clients. She is known for her encaustic art NZ, where oil pigments are mixed with hot, liquid wax and painted onto canvas for brilliant and vibrant colour. Her work mainly focuses on representations of people, including paintings of dancers and modern portraits. …faces, gestures, clothing and possessions all have a story to tell, revealing aspects of the person within the shell. To freeze and transfer a moment. To capture a person’s life. Giving a visual representation is not a summary of that person’s life, and definitely not all there is to tell. It is not possible to read an individual’s life in one image because we are made up of layers and we are complicated. I'm searching for the blueprint, the mark of the maker, the beginning of what we become. Jayne has been inspired by other figurative artists such as Vanessa Beecroft, Rineka Dijkstra, and Marlene Dumas. She is interested in humanity, character, anonymity, and what creates these questions or concerns within us. Contemplating the story of Adam and Eve in one exhibition, she noted that you don’t have to be religious to appreciate the themes in the story, especially the shame associated with nudity. When do we sense our nakedness? When do we stand on that edge which tilts us from being happy in our own skin? When do we become aware of how different we are? I think it is getting younger, that edge, our own tree of knowledge, the internet constantly informing us how we should look, what to wear and who to be. Born in the UK, Jayne immigrated to New Zealand with her parents and settled first in Henderson before moving to Helensville and now Kaipara. Her formal training was conducted at Hungry Creek Art and Craft School for a year before going fulltime at Ruthorford College to attain a certificate in Visual Arts. Jayne went on to teach art at the Get Creatives Suburban Titirangi program. Jayne’s paintings are collected for their vibrant colour and striking presentation. She has work in the UK, Europe, and the USA as well as nationally in New Zealand.

By nature, in every sense of the word, dogs are colourful. As Merle explains, her signature pieces (happy dogs art, dog runs in, runs out, runs across the image) portray the energetic, continual ritual of not only dogs but of life: “dogs are fun and know how to remain happy!” I see ordinary things and ideas emerging and developing in my mind, a never ending flow…they are just thoughts, fun-loving imaginings that eventually find their place on the paper, initially for my own pleasure but fanned by the recent discovery that these scribblings also bring pleasure to others. Merle is strongly influenced by her graphic design background. Her first running dogs were mono-prints, a series created in 1990 called, “dog, fog, jog…” These prints were made as a temporary alternative to etching. Soon, she began painting fish swimming alongside the dogs. This soon developed into dogs swimming with fish, the fish became flying fish, and, before long, the dogs were flying too. Along with her colourful wall art and pastel painting, Merle has also created sensory sculpture, including a bronze sculpture nz dog with its body parts labelled in braille. I find each day on the beach as I walk my own dog, so much happiness. This continues to motivate me as I try to capture some of this craziness in my work, so when a little joy is required at home it may be found on the wall preserved in pastel, etching, or bronze.

Craig’s NZ bird art and his large wildlife landscapes are inspired less by photographs and more by observation and research. Influenced by his background in graphic design, Craig looks for colour and detail in his subjects, while also noting down unique subtleties in their behaviour. I have observed tūī in their natural environment for years. It’s their personality, they almost have an arrogance about them as if they know they have adjusted better than most other native birds to the urban environment. Travelling to remote locations around New Zealand, Craig will sit and study his subjects for hours. It is here, without distraction, that Craig gains insight into certain bird habits and their particular or unusual postures. Māori mythology and New Zealand history have also been influential in Craig’s NZ art, as he shares his learning about the role of our native birds in founding stories and in the sophisticated structure of Māori beliefs and customs. While he observes bird interaction in their natural habitats, Craig is also interested in the way birds engage with man-made objects in urban environments. This shed at Stanley Point wharf, Devonport is the most amazing colour, and the lighting effects the colour generates are beautiful. When the lighting is right on a clear, still day, the angles of the tin create rich dark and light hues of the base colour... I started reading the signage one day as I admired the lettering skills of a profession I was once involved in. The beautiful brush control on the serif font is a skill long-forgotten, and the aging of the sign and the rust creeping into the fixtures adds to the time and history of the shed. Also, the message the sign portrays—the choice of wording goes back to a time when certain language was acceptable… I wonder what the colour of the shed was back then. The modern sign has almost been produced to clash with maximum impact. So what is so dangerous that you can’t dive from this shed? …I have used two species of birds to almost thumb their noses at the authority behind the signage… The terns’ balletic skills, skimming the surface of the bay, and their precise diving skills are a majestic sight. The Kingfishers, ever vigilant, notice any movement in the tidal zone. They pounce on any unsuspecting crustacean moving from cover… Craig’s painting process always begins with sketching and a colour study, to see if all the elements he has in mind will work together. The blocking in of the composition begins with broad brush strokes to fill the canvas and create a base for the painting. The vision is then built up using finer and finer brushes to achieve high detail. By the end of the painting, Craig will be using a tiny brush (almost a pencil) to note fine detail on a blade of grass or the glint in a bird’s eye. Craig developed his understanding of colour and his skills in realism, precision, and detail during his 25-year career in graphic design, where he specialised in illustration and packaging. his passion for birds began at a much younger age when he raised and rescued nestlings; sparrows that had fallen from a nest, blackbirds, thrushes, and many other species spent time in his parents’ hot water cupboard. He moved on to raise and breed budgies for many years and began to draw birds as a child. Craig’s strong interest in New Zealand’s great outdoor spaces grew through his love of surfing, which took him all over the country. Today, his travelling and his love of birds are expressed through his art. Craig Platt has regular exhibitions at Art by the Sea Gallery. His work, particularly his tui painting, is held in private collections across the country.

Her artwork offers a skilled explosion of life and colour, evoking the riot of growth, delicacy, and resilience to be found in flower gardens. Zoe has worked as full-time artist since the early 2000s, painting for exhibitions, on commission for hotels and restaurants and overseas clients, and completing a number of large murals. In New Zealand, her early work featured still life paintings of glass bottles. When I was a child, I always love glassware, such as glass bead, necklace, and button. Each time I watched the light that show through the colourful glass and reflected into spontaneous pattern, it aroused my imagination endlessly… from fairy tales, Cinderella’s crystal shoes to lighting magic, and a wild fancy. I came to New Zealand 5 years ago. Collecting old glass bottles become one of my hobbies; they were all well made by hand, some of them over a hundred years. I was attracted by their simple forms, pure colours and full of mystery… each bottle is a unique creation and has its own unique story, and I tried to capture all these feelings and merged to my painted image… I wondered where it drifts from, what was inside the bottle originally. What would it's owner look like… might be "The old fisherman" (Hemingway)… or a beautiful rich lady… until today it hides somewhere under the ground, quietly laid on the beach and buried by sand day after day until someone picks it up. Following four years studying graphic design at Chongqing University in China in the 80s, Zoe became an avid painter. She worked as a graphic designer for a magazine in Beijing and in the design department of a Chongqing television station, and painted in her spare time. She finally opened her own professional studio after completing an oil painting course at Sichuan Artists College in 2000. The College retained two of her oil paintings for permanent display. She moved to New Zealand in 2007 where she worked part-time in a flower shop and was inspired by the dual fragility and resilience she found in the flowers, delicate in beauty and yet able to survive journeys to different climates and plant roots in new soil. Many of her paintings evoke half-remembered emotional experiences to do with human interactions, relationships, and self-discovery. Zoe was a featured artist at the 2002 Guangdong Artists Exhibition and a nude oil painting of hers appeared in the art book they subsequently published. She received a commendation for excellence at the 2003 Chongqing Art Teachers Exhibition. Zoe has held sell-out exhibitions of her flower art at Art by the Sea since 2019, with clients often commissioning further work from her when all pieces have sold.

Mary specialises in limited edition NZ fine prints and original paintings of birds and flowers. She is especially passionate about native NZ bird art and NZ flora and botanicals, as evidenced in her etchings of kōwhai flowers, NZ rata, nīkau palms, little ruru, kererū (NZ woodpigeon), and tūi, to name a few. Mary’s fine art prints (NZ) and original paintings draw inspiration and subject matter from New Zealand's urban and bush life, from unique flora and native birds to cityscapes, beach and seascapes, and pristine wildernesses. Her style can be described as rich, meticulous, rhythmic, and celebratory, while always grounded in realism. Mary’s etchings are a time-consuming and manual process following a traditional method of hand drawing on Zinc plates—acid etching followed by aqua-tinting or hand-colouring. Clients especially appreciate the individual hand-colouring watercolour art, meaning that each print has its own, unique quality. Today, Mary’s original nature painting is also gaining popularity, loved for their illustrative style and the luminous quality she draws from the paint. Formerly a teacher, Mary has worked as a fulltime, professional artist since 1983. The major part of her time is devoted to her etchings and original paintings. She has also been known to write and illustrate books. Her book Old Blue: The Rarest Bird in the World (Ashton Scholastic, 1993) documented the story of DOC conservationists saving the Chatham Islands robin from the brink of extinction to great reviews, winning the AIM non-fiction award in 1994. Mary lives in a wilderness of exceptional beauty with lush bush and rugged coastlines. Her wildlife art is created in a studio surrounded by native forest and regularly travels throughout New Zealand seeking subject matter for her work. Mary’s work is held in private collections in New Zealand and internationally.
