Artist's proof of a hand-watercoloured etching by Mary Taylor. This special piece shows not just any black robin, but Old Blue, the Chatham Islands robin who, as the only fertile female in the 1980s, brought her whole species back from extinction in New Zealand. Created in 1993, this beautiful etching was crafted by Mary to accompany the book that she wrote about Old Blue and the endangered robins of which, at that time, there were only 5 birds remaining in the world. This artwork will be put up for auction via silent bidding at the opening of Art by the Sea's Ngā Manu Motuhake exhibition at 3pm, Sat 31st October 2026. Copies of Mary's book will also be available for sale.
