Mary Taylor

Mary Taylor is a New Zealand artist, born in Devonport. Formerly a teacher she has worked as a fulltime, professional artist since 1983.
Her work is held in many private collections in New Zealand and internationally.The major part of her time is devoted to her limited edition, hand-coloured etchings.She also paints in oils and water-colours, and writes and illustrates books. Her Old Blue: The rarest Bird in the World (Ashton Scholastic, 1993) won the AIM 1994 non-fiction award. Mary Taylor lives on Auckland's west coast in a wildnerness of exceptional beauty, of lush forest, and rugged coastine. She works in a studio surrounded by native forest. She travels extensively throughout New Zealand seeking subject matter for her work. Mary Taylor's work can be described as rich, meticulous, rhythmic and celebratory. Her work is always grounded in realism. Her etchings and paintings draw inspiration and subject matter from New Zealand's urban life, from its unique flora and fauna, landscape, seascape and pristine wilderness. Her etchings are a time-consumming and manual process following a traditional method of hand drawing on Zinc plates - acid etching and aqua-tinting or hand colouring. Each one is unique in its own right and will vary from others in the edition.
