Bill Hayes Sculptor and Ceramicist

"Ideas before Midnight" Exhibition

Bill Hayes sculptor

For well over 7 years now Bill has been making a name for himself as a leading New Zealand commission bronze sculptor and ceramics teacher. In the past he has been -
-commissioned to produce bronze plaques for Card Member Wines Easter show,
-commissioned to produce bronze plaques as part of Sir Edmund Hillary Ice Axe memorabilia case,
-commissioned to produce a copper and ceramic fountain for the entrance to The Lake House Art Centre on the North Shore
- Created a bronze entrance-way for Wairakia Golf Course
- 2007 completed large bronze public commission on Aucklands waterfront
- 2008 completed large commission for Chelsea Sugar Works on Auckland's North Shore City

"Invoke" was his first eagerly awaited exhibition of original wall plaques, bronze sculptures and ceramics. " I have been enthralled in the act of creation for many years now, and this body of work (the wall reliefs) represents an exciting new direction for me. I see them as a narrative about the process of creating sculpture. They have an industrial quality that is so much a part of working with cast metals, and they show a physicality that is required to produce a finished work...they challenge the viewer to look, comtemplate, and bring to bare their own aesthetic sense of form and texture to the work."

The title “Ideas Before Midnight” seemed like an appropriate name for this show as I find it’s a time when the workload of everyday has faded and I can find time to quietly reflect on my artwork. I have always used this time for sketching and design of future work as well as the contemplation of current projects. I feel this show more than any other is one of reflection on a series of organic form that has fascinated me for the past 20 years.
This work talks about the key points that are part of the art making process and why I value the study of form and texture in my art making.
My work is intertwined with my life and stems from my interest and exploration of our natural world. It’s no surprise to me that as an immigrant of 11 years to New Zealand I have found a need to reflect on life here and that reflection has also occurred in my studio.
It’s very exciting for me to realize that my passion for this series is still very strong and the ideas I have before midnight still capture my imagination and excite my sense of exploration. I hope this body of work instills a fresh inquisitive exploration for the viewer with each approach to the work.
