I don’t use photographs; everything’s based on what I’ve seen. Lindsay Crooks was an iconic fine artist based in Brighton, Dunedin. He was known for his bright, colourful paintings of happy beach scenes (NZ) and people enjoying typical New Zealand outdoor activities like surfing, fishing, and gardening. Around Dunedin and nationally, Lindsay was known as an ‘artist of the people.’ The following are excerpts taken from poet David Eggleton’s introduction to the book Venus on a Beach Towel (Longacre Press, 2003) about Lindsay and his art: A teacher of life drawing for twenty years, Lindsay Crooks' main subject as an artist is the human figure. His people are buoyant, jolly, life-affirming figures - their chunky body shapes worked into careful compositions which celebrate ordinary things, ordinary pleasures and the everyday world. Lindsay Crooks paints life as a kind of incessant activity. His paintings are full of movement. Figures walk with a rolling sailor's gait, or they dance, flex, stride, saunter, or they hurtle along on bicycles, dive down to seabeds and engage in frenetic beach activities… He explores the human comedy of domestic life and invests the small objects of daily life with both simple magic and comic dignity… He notices things: steam from a kettle, a cat curled up, a vase of flowers, the way snow fluoresces, the ocean view through an open door. Perhaps the primal site for Crook's studies of the figure is the beachscape… In a typical beach painting […] we will see children running towards the water, which will be alive with surfers and swimmers. Family groups will be picnicking. Teenagers gambol and frolic. The figures are solid, anchored, grounded. They grow out of the spaces they inhabit, indeed, they may be almost submerged in their surroundings: semi-transparent, camouflaged. And there is, as always, the signature knack for balanced colours and shapes—of sand tones and sea tones, of boardriders and sandsitters. Things happen in a blaze of light. Lindsay sadly passed away in 2005 after an 8-month battle with cancer. He is sorely missed. Lindsay was represented by Art by the Sea Gallery for over five years and we developed a close relationship with him. We have a list of Lindsay’s works that have come from personal art collections and that we are selling on behalf of our clients. These include signed original pastels, smaller framed original oils, and art prints on canvas and paper. A percentage of all profits will be returned to the beneficiaries of Lindsay's estate. More > Rustic Huntaway Price $2,995.00 Mantle Price $7,500.00 Kuri and the Hare Price $15,500.00 Follow My Path Price $50,000.00 Bio It is not the object that defines us - it merely implicates us. Sean Crawford is a successful New Zealand sculptor who has attained national and international recognition for his innovative multimedia and steel artwork. Originally Wellington-based but now living in the rural Wairarapa, his works are collected nationally and overseas. Known for having a layered approach to his art, Sean works in corten steel, laser-cut steel, reclaimed timber, and taxidermy, among other forms. His works are often large—depicting, for instance, a life-size antlered stag head—with intricate details, such as laser-cut fantail shapes or a metal huia bird skull. Sean’s artistic range includes: stainless steel garden art NZ cut into contemporary life-size animal sculptures; novel indoor and outdoor wall art NZ inspired by what he calls the ‘Pacific Modern’; and ecological art artistically exploring NZ landscapes and history in meticulous, multimedia detail. His inspirations are as varied as they are evolving. Techniques he learned from his boat building father interweave with creativity that frequently highlights environmental and social messages. History plays a role with some of Sean’s works questioning the contradictions of New Zealand's colonial past, whilst also being influenced by the Gothic storyteller Edgar Allen Poe and the paintings of Bill Hammond. Art and the great outdoors were features of Sean’s childhood. He could draw before he could walk (or so the family story goes!). Holidaying in the Wairarapa, Sean spent his summer helping out on local farms with livestock and pest control. Although he initially trained as a plumber, overseas travel rekindled his passion for art and design. On his return to New Zealand, he graduated with an honors degree in Design in 2003, and has been a full-time sculptor ever since. A highlight of Sean's career to date is his 2015 commission 'Waiting for Hammond', a two metre tall Huia bird sculpture set on a headland overlooking the Irish Sea. In New Zealand, his public work ‘The Head of John Doe’ was installed in Palmerston North in early 2022, and is sited near the entrance to the Te Manawa Arts Centre. His latest public sculpture is found in Masterton (in the Wairarapa). Titled ‘Distant Chant’, this two-piece work is made from corten steel. It stands approximately three meters high and depicts both male and female Huia ‘in flight’. Sean passionately believes that art should be as accessible as possible to all. His work is now being seen in even more public spaces, both in New Zealand and abroad. Outside the New Zealand embassy in Washington D.C. sits another commissioned piece. This work is titled ‘The Cloak of Remembrance’ and is an embracing cloak made of laser cut red poppies. It's a sign that his ideas, although largely home-grown, are respected and relevant on the world stage.

Jana specialises in oil portraits. For Jana, portrait painting is a vehicle through which to visually process aspects of the “human condition.” Themes in her work include the frustrating boundaries and restrictions we contend with in daily life, and her own deep conviction of the intrinsic value of humankind. When she paints, Jana is drawn to the tension of creating an impression of someone, whilst celebrating the mediums used as the “fabric” of that impression—the paint, the brush, and the canvas or board. By revealing not only the physical materials with which the work is made but also the hand which created it, she hopes to achieve an honesty and sense of authenticity. Her painting process involves building the picture plane with brush or knife strokes, whilst leaving parts of the canvas undeveloped, emulating the effect that the progression of time has on our character. She aims to enable the viewer to trace her brush, offering them a window into the past whilst illuminating the obscurity of time. Her constructional process further alludes to how situations and moments in life might influence, build and shape us, rendering us all perpetual “works in progress”. Jana completed a BA(Fine Art) in South Africa at the University of Pretoria. Growing up, she enjoyed ample opportunity to travel with her family and, having lived on three continents, Jana developed strong cultural competency and an ability to adapt. Relocating with her husband and two boys to New Zealand in 2016 meant yet another new environment. Through this experience, Jana came to see the common denominator of our humanity—as the “crown of creation,” more fundamental than any of our differences. This understanding prompted the current direction of her work. Recently, Jana has become intrigued by different world-views and how, as guides, they direct our understanding of truth, meaning, reality, and ultimately our attempts to make sense of the world around us. She is also inspired by the relational capacity of humankind. Deciphering non-verbal cues from each other is part of our daily functioning; by using her subjects’ names or nicknames as the title of some works, Jana invites the viewer to engage with them as individuals. Jana’s work has been recognised and exhibited by art institutions such as the Pretoria Arts Association, Sasol New Signatures, and the Ekurhuleni Mnyele Fine art awards. More recently, she has been a finalist in New Zealand contemporary art awards such as the Tasman National Art Awards, where she won the ‘People’s Choice’ award twice (2019 & 2021), as well as the Supreme art award in 2022. Jana was selected as a finalist at the Adam Portraiture Awards (2020 and 2022) hosted by the NZ Portrait Gallery in Wellington, and won the Committee's Choice award at the Taranaki National Art Awards in 2020. Her fine art portrait painting is held in private collections across the country and she is available for commissions.

He is drawn to details and textures, relishing the moments when he becomes engrossed in a subject and can envision the finished photograph. Largely self-taught, Jonathan’s style is influenced by Ansel Adams and the American West Coast movement of the middle 1900’s. Jonathan studied engineering science at Oxford University and enjoyed success at its photographic society. After losing both his parents to cancer, Jonathan emigrated to New Zealand where he met and fell in love with his now wife Julie. It was Julie who encouraged Jonathan to pursue his passion for photography. In Jonathan’s black and white photography process, the initial camera exposure is followed by what he terms an interpretation stage . Originally done in the darkroom, he now manages this on his computer with a stylus (tablet pen). He adjusts overall brightnesses, colours, and contrasts with a slow and subtle build-up of effect (called dodging and burning), taking hours or days on each photograph. This is the part of the process he loves the most. Before 2022, Jonathan's camera of choice was a Large Format Field View Camera made by the British firm Gandolfi. Resembling the plate cameras from history, this camera is made largely from wood and has a bellows. Every time he removed the camera from his backpack, Jonathan would marvel at its beauty. He would crouch under a dark cloth to focus and set up the shot. Exposures could take an hour or more. Jonathan was once asked by a young boy if he had a proper camera hidden inside, or was the outside just for show? In late 2022, in a big change, he began using two old digital cameras, one by Fujifilm and the other Leica. Whilst retaining his philosophy of making every shot count, the newer cameras offered freedom and spontaneity. Jonathan continues to create fine art photography, now with a contemporary approach in his attention to details and textures. He has a collection of photographic art at Art by the Sea Gallery and his work is found in private collections nationwide.
