He paints intuitively, rarely using preparatory sketches but instead allowing the work to take shape organically. A key focus for Carl is achieving balance in line, tone, colour, and overall composition. The incredibly precise lines and 3-dimensional shapes in Carl’s abstract fine art comes from his industry background in sign writing with a specialty in pin-striping for Hot Rods—a trade he learnt from his father. His artistic influences include cubists and impressionists such as Vincent Van Gogh, Wes Freed, Wifredo Lam, and Jean Michel Basquiat. Carl’s passion is the outdoors and interpreting the many varied people and experiences that colour his life. Some of his landscape scenes and NZ beach art have been painted en plein air in and around the west coast beaches of Auckland. Each of Carl’s geometric modern art paintings is meticulously and painstakingly hand-painted and then sealed with a final protective varnish. Symbols and intersecting planes suggest a way into deciphering his paintings, but the real beauty lies in discovering something new every time you look them.

He is married to Sherie Kemp and they have three sons. He was born in Ōtautahi Christchurch and moved to the Bay of Plenty when he was two. His iwi (tribal connections) are Ngāi Tahu, Ngāpuhi, and Te Arawa (Ngāti Mākino). Every time I start carving an old bit of wood I am always reminded of the tree it once was, and how it lived for centuries before it became the piece of wood I'm carving. As l start carving more into the piece I get a sense l am being directed with my chisels from the grains and natural flows of the wood. As the pieces evolve into form, I feel like they are old ancient relics from another time and l get to take the layer of overgrowth from them to reveal an old life force that once lived in Te Waonui O Tanemahuta (our ancient forest). A time forgotten . . . Joe is self-taught and works primarily in wood as his chosen medium. He enjoys the “secrets and surprises” that New Zealand native trees have within them. Joe’s standing and wall sculptures (NZ), or wall masks, depict human forms and faces emerging out of the wood. He has said that he feels the human form connects him with his ancestral history, bringing new meaning and purpose to the finished work. I sense a connection with Tane Mahuta (the life force of the tree) as I'm working with the wood, so it is quite a special feeling. I also carve a variety of stone, where again there is a connection with Papatuanuku (Earth Mother). I look to bring out the Wairua (essence) in each piece, starting from where the material originated and using any special features and grains in the stone and wood. Joe has over 20 years’ experience as a sculptor. He has participated in sculpture symposiums around the country, most notably at the Lake House Wood Sculpture Live symposium where he won first prize in 2012 and 2013. His work has evolved into the style and form we see today, drawing together traditional Māori carving with contemporary styles and cross-cultural influences (as we see in the Viking-like helmets on some pieces), allowing him to form his own, unique brand of contemporary Māori art. Joe's Māori wood carving is strong in wairua (spirit). They have a presence. We feel they protect our gallery space and offer something to our local community - we often speak with customers who tell us they believe the sculptures drew them into our store. [Today], I have a deeper understanding and respect for my work and the mediums I use which helps me connect to the wairua within. My work depicts new beginnings in a new world, with presence of Kaitiakitanga (Guardianship), Amorangi (Leadership), Mana (prestige, self-worth), kaha (strength), hope, and purpose.

He has a wide range, from sunny NZ beach art to golden light on snow-dusted mountains, soft-flowing New Zealand waterfalls, and emerald green lakes. In all of his landscape photography, Peter’s distinctive style is apparent, showing an experienced understanding of light, detail and clarity, and the impact of wide panoramic shots made by stitching many frames together. Constantly seeking new inspiration, Peter conducts extensive research to uncover fresh subjects and locations that engage his audience. New Zealand may be small on the map, but these far flung islands pack more variety and grandeur into every corner than anywhere else. Not that it makes my job any easier, NZ is surrounded by vast oceans and that means one thing—rapidly changing weather & plenty of liquid sunshine! I work hard to capture images that portray an original point of view, but it's all about the light and getting yourself in the right place at the right time. And when things don't go to plan, I'll try again. I'm persistent if nothing else! Peter was drawn to photography at an early age. He learned to develop film in a darkroom and found the whole process, including the length of time it took to reveal each photograph, magical. He bought a Canon T70 in the late 80s, soon followed by a Bronica 645 120 film camera. Today, the latest generation of Phase One medium format camera equipment allows Peter to capture images with even greater precision and detail than previously possible. Peter prints all of his photographs himself using a large format printer with archival pigment inks onto 100% cotton-rag fine art paper or acid-free archival canvas. These processes are state of the art and the materials used are the highest quality available. Print permanence ratings were published in 2007 by the Wilhelm Research Institute of California. They rated the print permanence of the processes and materials Peter uses to be greater than 250 years (indoors). Peter’s first book, Looking For The Light , was released in 2017 to wide acclaim and has now sold out. In the same year, Peter completed a series of 20 large installations for Auckland International Airport, showcasing the NZ landscape on an extraordinary scale. His latest book, Land of Light: Landscape Photographs of New Zealand was released in late 2024 and is available on order. Peter’s New Zealand landscape photographic prints are held in collections around the world. He has completed commissions for a number of corporate clients (TVNZ, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Rydges Hotel, Vector Arena, and more). Art by the Sea stocks a number of Peter’s framed canvas art prints and fine art paper prints and a wide range of his unframed prints in store. We can arrange for any prints we do not stock to be made on order. We also offer framing and shipping services for national and international orders.

His colourful paintings of NZ house interiors offer us glimpses into New Zealand home and bach lifestyles with native bird life and NZ landscape scenes often appearing through the windows. His still life painting (or "shelf life") suggests warmly nostalgic domestic scenes. My paintings and drawings are a positive expression of our world in form and colour, motion and character, radiance, and depth, with the energies of universal inspiration. Raymond’s contemporary oil painting carries a dynamic energy. His virtuoso colour arrangements, light and dark contrast, and strong sense of form and movement combine to offer inviting and lively house interiors. In his work, there is adept attention to spatial dynamics and dimensions coupled with a sense of stylised homeliness. Each room is laid out to draw us in – indeed, we feel as if we could almost step into them. Born in New Zealand, Raymond has been an artist most of his life. He began painting and exhibiting at the age of twelve. Two years later, his work featured in a nationwide Society of Arts touring exhibition. He also painted a 20m mural inside Kamo High School library, Whangārei, and became a working member of the Northland Society of Arts at the age of fourteen. Raymond studied at Elam School of Fine Arts, Auckland University, graduating in 1975. A theatrical childhood, with both parents acting and producing plays, my father also being an eccentric physics teacher, and a family friend being a prominent architect, all introduced me to creative expression. Then, being introduced to oil painting on canvas at age twelve, with exhibitions and sales of work soon after confirmed my direction as an artist. Raymond has exhibited in solo and group shows in New Zealand, the USA, and Singapore. He has been a finalist and prize winner in New Zealand arts competitions since 1977, including the Parklane Art Award and Auction (Auckland Museum), the James Wallace Art Awards (Auckland), the Duxton Art Awards (Wellington), the Molly Morpeth Canday Art Awards (Whakatāne), and the Waitakere Trust Art Awards (Auckland). He was a Parkin Drawing Award finalist in 2024 with his pen and ink drawing, Christo’s New York Studio – 1985. Raymond has completed many commissions for private and corporate clients and continues to be available for this work.

His figurative work ranges from vibrant paintings of women in circus and steampunk dress to sunny beach and garden scenes to softly painted nudes. He has won awards for his fine art portrait painting and been commissioned by a number of well-known organisations. Of his circus paintings, Paul said: These paintings reflect our two worlds, the exterior and interior, the seen and unseen. The effects of our surroundings on our inner essence. Paul is drawn by the inherent strength he finds in people while quietly observing their face and form. He favours a loose brush style with the work evolving on the canvas as he paints, and as he deepens his understanding of the subject. Character imperfections appeal to him and he balances his attempts to capture the essence of poses in the human figure with an interest in the life experienced by the individual person. Paul paints intuitively, through perception, and only uses photographs as a reference tool. Influenced by the American artist Alex Kanevsky, Paul’s figurative work is often given movement and atmosphere through his use of abstract backgrounds. Paul also paints the occasional captivating New Zealand landscape and still life. His interest in landscapes focuses on the extended vistas and rolling hills of the North Island, capturing the NZ summer with a finely tuned sense of light and atmosphere. His intimate still life renditions exploit the contrasting qualities of surface and light reflection, their detail and composition speaking to his senior experience in the craft. Paul has enjoyed a career as an exhibiting painter, professional illustrator and tertiary lecturer in Auckland for more than forty years. In the seventies and early eighties he had an extensive career in illustration, working in several of the top Auckland advertising agencies. He tutored part-time at a number of tertiary institutions, including Whitecliff College of Art, for over twenty years. He has said that teaching life drawing, fashion, and figure studies encouraged him to constantly perfect his own technique. Paul has completed a variety of significant private commissions including oil portraits of all of the America's Cup Skippers, and a series of three portraits for Kings College in Auckland. He has been a finalist in the Adam Portraiture Awards no fewer than six times and, in 2004, he was commissioned to design and illustrate six stamps and two first day cover motifs for the Christmas Stamps for NZ Post. Now retired from teaching, Paul is painting full time. His portrait art painting is collected both nationally and internationally.

Rosemary Eagles is an established contemporary abstract artist known for her paintings capturing the natural beauty of this country's vibrant plant life and stunning land, sky, and coastal environments. Her abstract landscape art has been described by collectors as both “peaceful and serene, vibrant and unique, or reminiscent of places visited.” She is especially known for her eye-catching paintings of NZ mānuka trees. Standing open and exposed are the Manuka trees, creating a line against the horizon. They are strong, durable and resilient against the harsh elements that batter them. Native Manuka plants offer multiple benefits to both the environment and humanity. These Manuka trees are the original source for our precious Manuka honey, Manuka oil, as well as being perfect for ecological restoration. Rosemary’s paintings of NZ are marked by her unrestrained use of colour and texture, testifying to her skill as an artist, her knowledge of different unique natural environments, and her industry experience in interior design and textiles. After excelling in art at school, Rosemary completed an Interior Design Diploma at Whitecliffe School of Art and Design in 1991. In 1996, Rosemary travelled extensively through the Middle East where countries such as Syria and Morocco exposed her to a completely different cultural and colourful environment, compared to the lush, fertile greens of New Zealand’s North Island. She went on to work as a textile importer where her contact with American and Indian textiles and fabrics increased her awareness of different substrates and textures, and stimulated her to pursue an earlier passion for oil painting. Rosemary finds moments of inspiration during family trips and hikes around New Zealand, especially when holidaying in the Coromandel or on daytrips up to Tāwharanui beach and conservation reserve. Tāwharanui Regional Park is located on the eastern end of Tokatu Peninsula which extends into the Hauraki Gulf just north of Kawau Island. In my mind this has always been a place of incredible beauty where rolling land meets the sea, with stunning beaches in every direction. Our family treasures this sacred piece of land which is simply idyllic. Rosemary has had over 12 exhibitions at Art by the Sea. Her earlier, bold fruit and flower paintings gave way to earthy terrains and strata, moody skies, and evocative horizons. Today, we see a lighter, uplifting colour palette in her nature painting with spring flowers, native ferns and flax, mānuka trees lit by touches of gold, and skilled expressions of New Zealand’s atmospheric coastal landscapes. Listen to Rosemary talk about her work in this 2022 episode of the Creative Matters podcast .

While oil portraiture is the main avenue for his art, David also occasionally presents highly detailed still life painting for sale at Art by the Sea. In these paintings, David chooses simple, often unnoticed, items from everyday life. David is a self-taught oil painter and draughtsman. In his approach to fine art portrait painting, he views the whole picture first as a construction of abstract qualities—colour, shape, tone—on the picture plane in order to communicate an overall sense, rather than to focus on a single subject or object. He uses representation to draw the viewer into the poetic world of the painting. In creating this believable world, he encourages us to look beyond the objective, towards the subjective inner workings of the mind. David has spent much of his time studying traditional painting, from the renaissance to the early 20th century, and this knowledge underpins his work. He has worked as a painting and drawing tutor, and he has work in the Wallace Art Collection. He has been selected to exhibit in the Adam Portrait Awards three times and has been a finalist twice, including with his Portrait of Esther Deans. Pictured left is his self-portrait.

Her artwork offers a skilled explosion of life and colour, evoking the riot of growth, delicacy, and resilience to be found in flower gardens. Zoe has worked as full-time artist since the early 2000s, painting for exhibitions, on commission for hotels and restaurants and overseas clients, and completing a number of large murals. In New Zealand, her early work featured still life paintings of glass bottles. When I was a child, I always love glassware, such as glass bead, necklace, and button. Each time I watched the light that show through the colourful glass and reflected into spontaneous pattern, it aroused my imagination endlessly… from fairy tales, Cinderella’s crystal shoes to lighting magic, and a wild fancy. I came to New Zealand 5 years ago. Collecting old glass bottles become one of my hobbies; they were all well made by hand, some of them over a hundred years. I was attracted by their simple forms, pure colours and full of mystery… each bottle is a unique creation and has its own unique story, and I tried to capture all these feelings and merged to my painted image… I wondered where it drifts from, what was inside the bottle originally. What would it's owner look like… might be "The old fisherman" (Hemingway)… or a beautiful rich lady… until today it hides somewhere under the ground, quietly laid on the beach and buried by sand day after day until someone picks it up. Following four years studying graphic design at Chongqing University in China in the 80s, Zoe became an avid painter. She worked as a graphic designer for a magazine in Beijing and in the design department of a Chongqing television station, and painted in her spare time. She finally opened her own professional studio after completing an oil painting course at Sichuan Artists College in 2000. The College retained two of her oil paintings for permanent display. She moved to New Zealand in 2007 where she worked part-time in a flower shop and was inspired by the dual fragility and resilience she found in the flowers, delicate in beauty and yet able to survive journeys to different climates and plant roots in new soil. Many of her paintings evoke half-remembered emotional experiences to do with human interactions, relationships, and self-discovery. Zoe was a featured artist at the 2002 Guangdong Artists Exhibition and a nude oil painting of hers appeared in the art book they subsequently published. She received a commendation for excellence at the 2003 Chongqing Art Teachers Exhibition. Zoe has held sell-out exhibitions of her flower art at Art by the Sea since 2019, with clients often commissioning further work from her when all pieces have sold.

Jules is originally from Zimbabwe, now based in Auckland, and is especially known for her incredible oil paintings of African animals. Painting exclusively in oils, Jules is a mid-career artist and is self-taught. She paints with an almost photographic clarity combined with a painter’s understanding of glowing light, brush strokes, and atmospheric abstract backgrounds and wide landscape vistas. I have always had a fascination with the natural world. Detail is important and it gives me a view into the rhythm of nature, so that I can build a relationship with the subject and get a glimpse into their character. It takes time to get to know them which is why oil paints suit my process. The goal is to be more than merely a representation, and this takes gradual layers of paint. With a gentle coaxing, a conversation is begun, a story begins to unfold. Jules has lived in New Zealand for over 15 years. She is passionate about wildlife conservation and this love and care for nature comes through in her work. Her paintings are rated highly by national and international wildlife and nature photographers. Jules is available for commission work.

Pauline’s New Zealand micrography uniquely employs writing conveying her environmental art activism in images depicting the environment she seeks to protect: Aotearoa New Zealand’s precious native bush and eco systems. I have a deep love and respect for our beautiful country and in times of stress find the beauty around me has a calming and healing effect. The effect man has had on this beauty I find disturbing. We are the only species on this wonderful world of ours that does not complete the circle of life. Sure, we go back to the earth, but while we are here we consume nature's resources and when we leave, we leave behind a myriad of possessions that pollute the earth. Art was a late discovery for Pauline. Uncertain of her ability, but eager to try, she attended art school for the first time in 2001. Pauline quickly fell in love with the work and the materials, indulging in every medium she could lay her hands on. Over the following years, her art slowly evolved into the nature art we see today, giving expression to her voice as an environmental and creative activist. The realization that through my art I can portray how beautiful I find the world we live in and my sorrow at the destruction we are causing was a turning point for my art , coupled with the development of micrography which seems to suit my drawing style. I can now create beautiful images that carry a strong message. If those that view these images are moved to make even a small change in their lives I have achieved my goal. Pauline is an award-winning artist who has appeared repeatedly in the NZ Herald. Her NZ art is held in private collections around New Zealand. She has been accepted 9 times for the Pattillo Whanganui Arts Review.
