His figurative work ranges from vibrant paintings of women in circus and steampunk dress to sunny beach and garden scenes to softly painted nudes. He has won awards for his fine art portrait painting and been commissioned by a number of well-known organisations. Of his circus paintings, Paul said: These paintings reflect our two worlds, the exterior and interior, the seen and unseen. The effects of our surroundings on our inner essence. Paul is drawn by the inherent strength he finds in people while quietly observing their face and form. He favours a loose brush style with the work evolving on the canvas as he paints, and as he deepens his understanding of the subject. Character imperfections appeal to him and he balances his attempts to capture the essence of poses in the human figure with an interest in the life experienced by the individual person. Paul paints intuitively, through perception, and only uses photographs as a reference tool. Influenced by the American artist Alex Kanevsky, Paul’s figurative work is often given movement and atmosphere through his use of abstract backgrounds. Paul also paints the occasional captivating New Zealand landscape and still life. His interest in landscapes focuses on the extended vistas and rolling hills of the North Island, capturing the NZ summer with a finely tuned sense of light and atmosphere. His intimate still life renditions exploit the contrasting qualities of surface and light reflection, their detail and composition speaking to his senior experience in the craft. Paul has enjoyed a career as an exhibiting painter, professional illustrator and tertiary lecturer in Auckland for more than forty years. In the seventies and early eighties he had an extensive career in illustration, working in several of the top Auckland advertising agencies. He tutored part-time at a number of tertiary institutions, including Whitecliff College of Art, for over twenty years. He has said that teaching life drawing, fashion, and figure studies encouraged him to constantly perfect his own technique. Paul has completed a variety of significant private commissions including oil portraits of all of the America's Cup Skippers, and a series of three portraits for Kings College in Auckland. He has been a finalist in the Adam Portraiture Awards no fewer than six times and, in 2004, he was commissioned to design and illustrate six stamps and two first day cover motifs for the Christmas Stamps for NZ Post. Now retired from teaching, Paul is painting full time. His portrait art painting is collected both nationally and internationally.

He has a wide range, from sunny NZ beach art to golden light on snow-dusted mountains, soft-flowing New Zealand waterfalls, and emerald green lakes. In all of his landscape photography, Peter’s distinctive style is apparent, showing an experienced understanding of light, detail and clarity, and the impact of wide panoramic shots made by stitching many frames together. Constantly seeking new inspiration, Peter conducts extensive research to uncover fresh subjects and locations that engage his audience. New Zealand may be small on the map, but these far flung islands pack more variety and grandeur into every corner than anywhere else. Not that it makes my job any easier, NZ is surrounded by vast oceans and that means one thing—rapidly changing weather & plenty of liquid sunshine! I work hard to capture images that portray an original point of view, but it's all about the light and getting yourself in the right place at the right time. And when things don't go to plan, I'll try again. I'm persistent if nothing else! Peter was drawn to photography at an early age. He learned to develop film in a darkroom and found the whole process, including the length of time it took to reveal each photograph, magical. He bought a Canon T70 in the late 80s, soon followed by a Bronica 645 120 film camera. Today, the latest generation of Phase One medium format camera equipment allows Peter to capture images with even greater precision and detail than previously possible. Peter prints all of his photographs himself using a large format printer with archival pigment inks onto 100% cotton-rag fine art paper or acid-free archival canvas. These processes are state of the art and the materials used are the highest quality available. Print permanence ratings were published in 2007 by the Wilhelm Research Institute of California. They rated the print permanence of the processes and materials Peter uses to be greater than 250 years (indoors). Peter’s first book, Looking For The Light , was released in 2017 to wide acclaim and has now sold out. In the same year, Peter completed a series of 20 large installations for Auckland International Airport, showcasing the NZ landscape on an extraordinary scale. His latest book, Land of Light: Landscape Photographs of New Zealand was released in late 2024 and is available on order. Peter’s New Zealand landscape photographic prints are held in collections around the world. He has completed commissions for a number of corporate clients (TVNZ, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Rydges Hotel, Vector Arena, and more). Art by the Sea stocks a number of Peter’s framed canvas art prints and fine art paper prints and a wide range of his unframed prints in store. We can arrange for any prints we do not stock to be made on order. We also offer framing and shipping services for national and international orders.

She works either in phosphor bronze or cast bronze using the lost wax method. The phosphor bronze technique is a unique art form only known by a few. In this method, Lucy welds strips of bronze together, building the piece up from one side to the other to create one-off pieces. Lucy creates ecological art or protest art (artivism) concerned with environmental issues, particularly climate change (as we see in her travelling polar bears). While her subject matter is global and political, Lucy's work remains fervently empathetic in its creation and intent. Lucy graduated with a BA (Hons) degree from Bath Academy of Art, UK (1987), and settled in New Zealand in 1998. Her work has appeared in solo exhibitions and collective shows such as Sculpture on the Gulf Waiheke Island and Sculpture On the Shore Auckland. In 2009, Lucy won the Peoples’ Choice Award for a meercat piece entitled ‘Special forces on patrol.’ Lucy was selected as a finalist for the Small Sculpture Art exhibition at Waiheke Island Gallery in 2013. She also won The McConnell Family Supreme Award for Big Man at Sculpture in the Gardens 2011/12 and has work displayed at Brick Bay Vineyard Matakana and Auckland Botanical Gardens. The Big Man sculpture of a polar bear in a hoody (life-size, one-off bronze) is now on permanent public display outside Lower Hutt City Hospital.

Kirsty’s summer bush and coastal scenes showcase New Zealand’s incredible native trees and flora, including nikau palms, harakeke flowers (NZ flax), cabbage trees, toetoe, kawakawa, kōwhai, and blossoming pōhutukawa. Her paintings feature tui and pīwakawaka (fantail), with korimako (bellbirds) and kōtare (NZ kingfisher) also making an appearance. When I lost my wonderful dad the birds began to feature in my artwork. Birds even sounded louder to me. I bought a charm for a bracelet of a pīwakawaka and would often run the back feathers though my fingers as I thought of him. As I paint each bird I want them to look as though they are thinking something. Watching something. Communicating with each other. A snapshot of them in thought. When I lost my beautiful mum, once again the birds sounded louder. For over 20 years Kirsty has been a successful artist capturing the intensity of colour and light found in New Zealand’s unique native bush and coastal scenes. She began her career in advertising and now cherishes the peace of the canvas and her subject matter. When I start a painting and the first layers are coming together there's a piece of me that knows how it will look completed, and there will be a part of it that surprises me. Sometimes, in the middle of the process, I have to stop and wait a while to gather my thoughts and get back on track. So I stop. That painting needs a rest. Kirsty’s appeal and recognition as one of New Zealand's foremost landscape artists has been celebrated in national art publications such as Art News and Asian Art News. She also features in the New Zealand Favourite Artists book (2010) edited by Denis Robinson. Her range and experience in different techniques such as acrylic painting, watercolour, and etching has increased her popularity amongst collectors. Her Art by the Sea exhibitions consistently sell well and her growth in popularity is a testament to the timeless quality and detail of her NZ landscape paintings. Nestled in their settings, my birds give me a lot of peace. They are company. When a show is all put together and the birds are lined up in their bush and foliage settings I almost feel as if I can hear them. They are windows to a green restful place. With all the chaos surrounding us, advertising hammering us, political uncertainty, climate madness, I want my paintings to communicate peace. To slow us down. To literally stop and breathe.

Jana specialises in oil portraits. For Jana, portrait painting is a vehicle through which to visually process aspects of the “human condition.” Themes in her work include the frustrating boundaries and restrictions we contend with in daily life, and her own deep conviction of the intrinsic value of humankind. When she paints, Jana is drawn to the tension of creating an impression of someone, whilst celebrating the mediums used as the “fabric” of that impression—the paint, the brush, and the canvas or board. By revealing not only the physical materials with which the work is made but also the hand which created it, she hopes to achieve an honesty and sense of authenticity. Her painting process involves building the picture plane with brush or knife strokes, whilst leaving parts of the canvas undeveloped, emulating the effect that the progression of time has on our character. She aims to enable the viewer to trace her brush, offering them a window into the past whilst illuminating the obscurity of time. Her constructional process further alludes to how situations and moments in life might influence, build and shape us, rendering us all perpetual “works in progress”. Jana completed a BA(Fine Art) in South Africa at the University of Pretoria. Growing up, she enjoyed ample opportunity to travel with her family and, having lived on three continents, Jana developed strong cultural competency and an ability to adapt. Relocating with her husband and two boys to New Zealand in 2016 meant yet another new environment. Through this experience, Jana came to see the common denominator of our humanity—as the “crown of creation,” more fundamental than any of our differences. This understanding prompted the current direction of her work. Recently, Jana has become intrigued by different world-views and how, as guides, they direct our understanding of truth, meaning, reality, and ultimately our attempts to make sense of the world around us. She is also inspired by the relational capacity of humankind. Deciphering non-verbal cues from each other is part of our daily functioning; by using her subjects’ names or nicknames as the title of some works, Jana invites the viewer to engage with them as individuals. Jana’s work has been recognised and exhibited by art institutions such as the Pretoria Arts Association, Sasol New Signatures, and the Ekurhuleni Mnyele Fine art awards. More recently, she has been a finalist in New Zealand contemporary art awards such as the Tasman National Art Awards, where she won the ‘People’s Choice’ award twice (2019 & 2021), as well as the Supreme art award in 2022. Jana was selected as a finalist at the Adam Portraiture Awards (2020 and 2022) hosted by the NZ Portrait Gallery in Wellington, and won the Committee's Choice award at the Taranaki National Art Awards in 2020. Her fine art portrait painting is held in private collections across the country and she is available for commissions.

His style is diverse, ranging from early metal collages of boats and sailing life to classic plein-air paintings of NZ to modern downtown city scenes. More recently, Graham has enjoyed painting beautiful and wildly colourful flower gardens, often with a white villa stark against the sky in the background. I have the whole world in my garden, a place for reflecting on life and nature. Graham has been carrying his paint box around since he was about eight years old. He paints in both oil and acrylic, depending on the artwork. In his early quirky conceptual collages, he was known to upcycle metal and found objects. New Zealand art critic, T. J. McNamara, has described Graham's NZ landscape art as "filled with light and full of charm and joy in water, clouds and sky.” I have had a lifetime of conceptual art, but I find that now I have returned to the beginning. My paintings are a synthesis of sketchbook drawings and memory, expressing the visual poetry that resonates within the bounds of my past and present. To express that tranquillity in my own language and to acknowledge how beauty can be in the common world around us and let my paintings be a refuge from the everyday tribulations, and to celebrate nature is my raison d’etre. Starting his career as an advertising art director and illustrator, Graham worked for many international agencies. He won many awards in this role, working on iconic NZ brands like Air NZ, Edmonds, Hubbard cereals, Cuisine Magazine, Belly-Gully, and more. Up until his retirement, painting was Graham’s escape from the commercial world. Now, he is able to devote more time to his passion.

Carol’s abstract watercolour art is most often painted after a walk around her local area, recalling her impressions of the scenery and activities. Her work is prized, in particular, for its contemporary style and the incredible depth and brightness of colour she is able to achieve, testifying to her skill and experience working with watercolours. Women of my age have seen thousands of pictures so they have a greater interest in simplified, pleasing, and balanced arrangements of one's own ideas and outlooks. By referring to abstraction in painting, I think that my intention is to create the essence of the subject rather than to reproduce the pictorial aspects of what is presented. I personally prefer the work to take on a life of its own as it grows naturally from my memory, vision or perspective. Carol is a self-taught artist who has been exhibiting her modern art for over 40 years. She studied at Christchurch Teachers College, Victoria University, and the University of Auckland. In her working life, she held positions in teaching, social work, personnel management, and industrial relations. As a painter, Carol feels an affinity to artists such as Doris Lusk, Austen Deans, Toss Woollaston, and Colin McCahon, among others. While travelling through Europe in her twenties, Carol discovered the French impressionists and was enamoured, in particular, by Manet. In London, she came across a large J. M. W. Turner painting at the National Gallery. It was this experience that encouraged her to explore atmosphere using watercolour, adding a unique delicacy to the fortitude of colour in her personal technique. Now retired, she is able to paint full time. Colour, form, and linear relationships are important to me with a particular place, event or significant person suggested in the composition. "To thine own self be true" has remained a guiding principal and this allows some personal issues and occasional problems to be resolved as each painting develops. My best advice to an aspiring artist would be to follow your thoughts when it comes to painting. Carol’s watercolour landscapes have been recognised by a number of regional and national awards, including the Pumphouse art awards in Takapuna and the (formerly) Telecom New Zealand Art Awards. She has also received first prizes at the Depot Art Awards in Devonport and the 2002 Royal Easter Show awards in Auckland (watercolour section). Her work is held in private collections nationally and internationally. Carol’s abstract modern art paintings are available to purchase unframed, for easy transport, with a few pieces framed up so you can see what they look like in store. Art by the Sea offers a full framing service at an additional cost.

- About | Art by the Sea Gallery
Read the story of Art by the Sea and take a virtual walk through our Auckland art gallery. We exhibit fine and affordable original art and limited edition prints by NZ artists. Find Auckland art museums in New Zealand. About Us Making connections through art Kia Ora Koutou e nga Manuhiri. Nau mai, haere mai, haere mai. Hello and welcome to our gallery of established and emerging artists from Aotearoa New Zealand. Art by the Sea virtual tour Our Story Art by the Sea was established in 1991 in the historic Duders building on the waterfront of the seaside suburb, Devonport to showcase New Zealand art and artists. We would like to acknowledge the hard mahi of Bronwyn Davies who ran the Devonport art gallery for its first ten years in business and established its integral connection with the Devonport community. The current owners, Mike and Linda Geers, purchased the business in 2001 and built it up to the reputable Auckland art gallery it is today. Following the move to Takapuna in 2021, Art by the Sea has established strong ties to the Takapuna and Milford communities. We are honoured by the support and welcome we have received. We could (and may!) write a book with the stories that have travelled through or begun at Art by the Sea. Mike and Linda Geers interviewed by Mandy Jakich, Creative Connections Podcasts , Episode 188 (full interview below) There have been floods (in 2001 and during the infamous Auckland Floods 2023). There was the drunk driver who crashed their car through the front window. There have been practical jokes, such as the time we placed a giant sandstone kina on the beach by the ferry on April Fools’ Day, or a few years later when we precariously climbed the Edwards Parade clock tower to balance presents on top at Christmas. And there have been incredible community events—charity fundraisers for Amnesty International, War Child, the Key to Life Trust. On these nights, the gallery came alive as we witnessed poets and artists joining together in creative expression about human rights, children affected by war and conflict, and mental health awareness. The stories will continue... Today, Art by the Sea stands as a respected Auckland art gallery showcasing a wide variety of fine and affordable original art and limited edition prints from across Aotearoa New Zealand. We are proud to have a sister gallery, Art by the River , in Whanganui. Art by the Sea is a business but it is also a communal space that draws in residents and travellers alike seeking a little time-out and inspiration away from the chaos of today. We are kaitiaki (guardians) of this space. And this space provides manaakitanga (respect, support, and hospitality) to all who visit it. Hei kona mai. We look forward to welcoming you into our gallery. Linda and Mike Geers

A natural dreamer, her work is influenced by emotion and intuition, and she allows that to guide her hands and speak in her prints. Kate's linocut relief prints are made by pulling designs from her pencil sketches and cutting them into lino blocks with small chisels. The work is then hand-burnished on to quality acid-free paper using light-fast inks. Due to the hand-made nature of the linocut printing process the prints have very slight variations, making each piece one of a kind. She works mainly in oil on canvas but enjoys playing with other mediums too. While she is particularly drawn to modern portraits and figurative work, she has been known to experiment with other subject matter. Thinking about her approach to art, Paula appreciates this quote from nationalgalleries.org: Expressionists searched inwards for deeper meaning. The style is defined by free brushwork, heightened colour and jagged or elongated forms. Paul is self-taught. She is inspired by individuality in people, and looks to discover/reveal that in her artwork. Paula is interested in exploring options for commissions.
