Her fine art photography captures pockets of beauty in the everyday world: the texture of nīkau berries falling like beads down a trunk; bright citrine hibiscus flowers in a bed of blue/green leaves; or jewelled water pooling in coloured patches over a mossy forest floor. I have always been a visual creature, drawn to beautiful colour palettes and the awe-inspiring compositions created by mother nature and by artisans alike. Natalie worked for many years in a demanding career while also raising a young family. Then, in 2012, her husband Guy bought her a camera for Christmas. “I love seeing the world through your eyes,” he said, and immediately everything changed for her. From that day, she had a tool to capture and construct a world view that she hadn’t realised existed. It ignited a wellspring of self-expression, and a love affair with nature. I’m drawn to the untamed and unrelenting beauty served up by nature every day for everyone who chooses to pause long enough to connect with it. Natalie’s photographic art has been described as “a celebration of the often overlooked” but she likes to think of it like a trail of breadcrumbs, leading us back to treasure that which we have long since forgotten to see, to acknowledge, or to pay tribute to. As a botanical photographer, Natalie captures the texture as well as the vivid beauty of the flower. Each piece of her work is a microcosm of nature’s wonder: a vignette of the majesty that exists under our very noses... just waiting for us to claim it. Her art is also a subtle statement in activism. By composing and presenting each ‘unremarkable’ serving of nature, I hope to elevate the reverence and respect that our beautiful world deserves… Art is cheap, but nature is priceless. As Natalie has explained, photographing nature is a mirror for her; it is a truth and a vehicle to process, recall, and reframe the beliefs and experiences that shape her life. A camera her constant companion, Natalie is inspired by art's capacity to soothe the soul, and to change the way we see the world.

Craig’s NZ bird art and his large wildlife landscapes are inspired less by photographs and more by observation and research. Influenced by his background in graphic design, Craig looks for colour and detail in his subjects, while also noting down unique subtleties in their behaviour. I have observed tūī in their natural environment for years. It’s their personality, they almost have an arrogance about them as if they know they have adjusted better than most other native birds to the urban environment. Travelling to remote locations around New Zealand, Craig will sit and study his subjects for hours. It is here, without distraction, that Craig gains insight into certain bird habits and their particular or unusual postures. Māori mythology and New Zealand history have also been influential in Craig’s NZ art, as he shares his learning about the role of our native birds in founding stories and in the sophisticated structure of Māori beliefs and customs. While he observes bird interaction in their natural habitats, Craig is also interested in the way birds engage with man-made objects in urban environments. This shed at Stanley Point wharf, Devonport is the most amazing colour, and the lighting effects the colour generates are beautiful. When the lighting is right on a clear, still day, the angles of the tin create rich dark and light hues of the base colour... I started reading the signage one day as I admired the lettering skills of a profession I was once involved in. The beautiful brush control on the serif font is a skill long-forgotten, and the aging of the sign and the rust creeping into the fixtures adds to the time and history of the shed. Also, the message the sign portrays—the choice of wording goes back to a time when certain language was acceptable… I wonder what the colour of the shed was back then. The modern sign has almost been produced to clash with maximum impact. So what is so dangerous that you can’t dive from this shed? …I have used two species of birds to almost thumb their noses at the authority behind the signage… The terns’ balletic skills, skimming the surface of the bay, and their precise diving skills are a majestic sight. The Kingfishers, ever vigilant, notice any movement in the tidal zone. They pounce on any unsuspecting crustacean moving from cover… Craig’s painting process always begins with sketching and a colour study, to see if all the elements he has in mind will work together. The blocking in of the composition begins with broad brush strokes to fill the canvas and create a base for the painting. The vision is then built up using finer and finer brushes to achieve high detail. By the end of the painting, Craig will be using a tiny brush (almost a pencil) to note fine detail on a blade of grass or the glint in a bird’s eye. Craig developed his understanding of colour and his skills in realism, precision, and detail during his 25-year career in graphic design, where he specialised in illustration and packaging. his passion for birds began at a much younger age when he raised and rescued nestlings; sparrows that had fallen from a nest, blackbirds, thrushes, and many other species spent time in his parents’ hot water cupboard. He moved on to raise and breed budgies for many years and began to draw birds as a child. Craig’s strong interest in New Zealand’s great outdoor spaces grew through his love of surfing, which took him all over the country. Today, his travelling and his love of birds are expressed through his art. Craig Platt has regular exhibitions at Art by the Sea Gallery. His work, particularly his tui painting, is held in private collections across the country.

Find NZ art, abstract art NZ, and affordable original art at Art by the Sea Gallery, Takapuna. Catherine Manchester Abstract Oil Painter Catherine Mansfield is a trained fine artist specialising in abstract and figurative work. More > 2020 Price $1,680.00 Figures from the Anthro Scene Price $1,850.00 Figuring the Multiverse Price $1,850.00 Bio Catherine Manchester is a mid-career abstract and figurative artist from Wellington, New Zealand. She holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Diploma of Fine Arts. Her paintings often have elements of the sea; she thinks of them as “landscapes of the mind.” Her current and ongoing body of abstract art (NZ) is inspired by a wild and windy Wellington night when her TV began producing pixelated images. The wild distortions of the images and changing bands of colour were my weird gift from the wind to the wire. I ran to get my cell phone and captured some of the fast changing images. I printed them off and for the next year or so I stayed with them, imagining how I would paint them. Catherine grew up in a coastal settlement of Eastbourne in Lower Hutt. Her early memories are of beaches in Auckland. As a teenager, she wrote her hopes and dreams into poems. When she was 19, the death of a friend plunged her into sorrow and her work is often about working her way towards the light and giving a permanence to those early dreams of love. I am interested in where we come from and the places we love and inhabit. When I turned 65, I wanted to know about my ancestors so I sent off a DNA sample and was surprised and delighted to find I was 51 percent Celtic and 41 percent Scandinavian, and with Italian, Spanish, and Greek for the rest. My ancestors lived by the sea in Cornwall, and some came from Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The Scandinavians are seafaring people. One of my early dreams was ancient artefacts being washed up on Days Bay beach. They looked Roman! Catherine is a writer and poet, as well as an artist. She spent 15 months in Auckland in Laingholm, a seaside settlement near Titirangi. It was a perfect place to paint, work on films and to start a novel in between covid lockdowns. Catherine has work in both private and public collections throughout New Zealand. Public collections include the Christchurch Law Society and Timaru's Aigantighe Art Gallery. In 2025, one of her works was published in The Orion Powerhouse Gallery Akaroa: A Half Century of the Arts by Marie Connolly. She was a finalist in the 2006 Adam Portraiture Award, the Greater Wellington regional art award in 2018, and the Whirinaki Whare Taonga Wellington Arts Review.

An advocate for nature and the preservation of the environment, Derek is known for his oil paintings, wooden sculptures (NZ), and New Zealand wooden wall art showcasing Aotearoa New Zealand’s unique wildlife, including eels, fish, and native birds such as the tūī, kōtare (NZ kingfisher), and kererū (wild pigeon). A consistent style in Derek’s wildlife art is found in the attention he pays to different types of light. The colour palette in his oil paintings captures the half-light, moody yet beautiful, found on the west coast of Auckland and in the Hauraki plains. Derek believes his work practice is often about giving form to his thought processes. Usually when I begin a piece I have only a partial idea about the narrative and the form it will take. Solutions gradually unfold during the process of working and I love the journey of uncovering this mystery. Derek graduated from Elam School of Fine Arts in 1969 and Epsom Teacher Training College in 1970. At Elam, Derek’s painting tutor was Colin McCahon, which comes across in Derek’s skilful, atmospheric landscapes. As well as teaching, Derek has worked part-time in the fields of leather craft, jewellery, sculpture, painting, and photography. His jewellery featured in numerous group and solo exhibitions between 1982 and 1989. Derek works in his home studio in West Auckland, surrounded by nature, where he has lived for over 45 years. His teaching, post-graduate studies, art work, and involvement in the restoration of a river habitat in the Waitakere River Valley, all reflect his love of nature and concern for the conservation of the natural environment. His memorable exhibition, Dark Waters, at Lopdell House Gallery was a reflection on the transformation of the land on the Hauraki Plains and the tension between farming and the loss of wildlife habitats. Derek is a keen member of Riverwatch, a volunteer group that replants native vegetation around river banks and estuaries. Painting has been Derek’s main focus over the past fifteen or so years and his nature art has featured in numerous solo and group shows over that time. Alongside Art by the Sea, his sculptures and nature painting have appeared in solo exhibitions in Lopdell House (Titirangi, Auckland), Corbans Estate Centre (Henderson, Auckland,) and The Suter Gallery (Nelson).

Alysn Midgelow-Marsden is a contemporary fine artist from Auckland with a northern European heritage. Her sculptures (tabletop and wall-mounted) are intricate mixed-media combinations of textiles, metal or found plastics, gilding, canvas, gesso, verdigris, and stitching. Alysn’s work is inspired by her curiosity with the human psyche. She is driven by her background in science, her continuing interest in the natural environment, and her attention to the social stereotypes associated with textiles and stitching. She combines her environmental interests with a fascination for the traditions of different cultures and times, finding connections in shared human experience. My practice delivers an invitation to create pleasurably intimate connections to personal experiences through subconscious, visceral, and emotive interactions. Marked visually by a complex, lyrical fluidity, the sculptural works articulate connections, responses, fragility, and strength. Alysn’s complex mixed media textile art presents forms and figures whose meaning are largely open to the viewer’s interpretation. Themes emerge slowly in her gentle yet obsessive mazes of stitching or crochet as she exploits the boundaries of the surfaces and creates subtle combinations of colour and material. Alysn has received awards for her work at national and international exhibitions, including the Mandurah Wearable Art show in Australia (for a work entitled ‘What Lies Beneath’); the Wall Brooches II exhibition in Australia (for ‘Taniwha’); and Nelson’s Changing Threads show in New Zealand (for “The Spaces Between VII”).

He is known for his modern art oil paintings on canvas based on moments captured in old photographs, particularly black-and-white photographs that he paints in colour. I try to breathe life and the moment into what are otherwise static records of a time and a place… I can’t reproduce with photographic accuracy, which is not my aim, but I can use colour to increase the depth of the image, creating something that the photo cannot be. Hamish used to spend hours sitting on the floor of the Auckland Public Library photographic section, deliberating long and hard about which photos he would paint. He is especially drawn to Magnum photographers like Robert Doisneau and Cartier-Bresson. His style comes across as almost illustrative, while retaining the memory of the photograph, with a surrealist edge. Hamish began his art career as a jeweller, receiving instruction in 1986 at the Daniel Clasby Workshop where he worked for two years before establishing his own workshop. He sold jewellery and small sculptures at The Fingers Contemporary Jewellery Gallery, and was involved with a group of young jewellers called Jewellery Unlimited which ran for several years until it dissolved. In 1986, he became involved with The Medallion Group and exhibited in three of the early shows. This group later renamed to become The Medallion Association of New Zealand, or MANZ, and has continued to show Hamish’s work. Hamish began painting in 1991 and has appeared in a number of exhibitions. Alongside Art by the Sea and MANZ, Hamish has exhibited his contemporary oil painting at The Cliff McPherson Gallery, Orexart, and Artis Gallery in Auckland.

The beauty and vitality of New Zealand’s bush, river, and coastal environments are well-represented in Sarah’s art. The physical size of her long thin New Zealand landscape art - and the drama of the work - lead us on a grand journey over land, sky, and sea. I am well-known for my use of unusually long canvases—more than six times as long as they are high. I first used this format in 1998, and I have been surprised at the enthusiasm with which it has been welcomed by collectors. The width enhances the sense of space within the frame; but I believe it also stretches the imagination, and infers the idea of the landscape extending beyond the edges of the canvas. Originally from Whangarei, Sarah grew up in Rotorua and Cambridge. She went through formal art school education in Christchurch in the 1970s. After graduating from Canterbury University School of Fine Arts and Christchurch Teachers College she taught art and art history at schools in Whangarei, and later at Kaipara College in Helensville. Sarah has worked as a full time painter since 1995, regularly exhibiting in groups or solo shows. In 2007, she exhibited in the Biennale Internazionale dell' Arte Contemporanea in Florence. Her paintings of NZ are in private and public collections in this country and overseas, including the prestigious Barilla collection of Modern Art in Italy (which also holds work by Pablo Picasso, Francis Bacon, Henry Moore and Max Ernst.

Julia Lochhead is a fine art photographer from Mount Maunganui, New Zealand. Her soft, long exposure seascapes evoke feelings of tranquility and peace, offering a quiet sanctuary from the chaos of the world today. At the same time, the familiar NZ beach art and coastal photos ground us in nature, reminding us that there is more to the world than just ourselves. My work blurs the line between painting and photography by using varying lengths of exposure and natural movement of the ocean. I capture not only a moment in time but also create that feeling that brings you back to your senses, back to your breath, and back to you. Julia grew up in rural New Zealand and developed a strong connection to nature and, especially, the ocean. Long summer holidays were spent by the beach and the water became her “soulful place.” She fell in love with photographic art, especially that concerned with creating movement, while attending a course at the London School of Photography. I began learning to capture what it was that I was feeling and with this, photography became the way I saw the world. After eight years, Julia came back home to further progress her passion by completing a 2-year diploma in Photographic Imaging. This formed a solid foundation for her to refine and evolve her techniques in fine art photography. She has had successful exhibitions at a local gallery in Mount Maunganui and has appeared in exhibitions at Art by the Sea, where many of her works are sold.

Her more abstract and minimalised forms conceal complex ideas about feminine roles and the projection of the inner self through the outer form. Anna’s works are autobiographical, using the female figure to communicate her experiences. Of her 2023 exhibition, she said: This exhibition explores the two sides of my reality from the static works portraying myself in the present form conjuring hard, but delicate lines to the light hearted, tender works which refer to memories and dream states produced from a distortion of reality and transient, personal thoughts that revisit the playful mischief and mystery of childhood. Anna is a regular participant in sculpture symposia and sculpture park exhibitions both locally and abroad. Anna has participated in (and won prizes in) international symposia in Qatar, Montenegro, Cyprus, Australia, Denmark, Romania, Albania, Macedonia, Egypt, Turkey, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Korea, and Costa Rica, among others. Many of her symposium pieces have been installed as public art sculptures following the event. In New Zealand, Anna was awarded first prize for her work at sculpture symposia in Rotorua (2014), Whangarei (2012), and the Coromandel (2008). She has been exhibited on multiple occasions at Sculpture Onshore (Devonport), Sculpture on the Peninsula (Banks Peninsula), Art in a Garden (Canterbury), and Shapeshifter at the Dowse (Lower Hutt). She has twice been a finalist in the prestigious Wallace Art Awards (2016 and 2018). Anna was a trustee on the board of Eco Artists New Zealand, a charitable trust that uses funds from the sales of art to help environmental projects, specifically focusing on native New Zealand species and their ecosystems. On her views about the relationship between humans and environments, Anna said: …the figure represents myself in varying states of tension and emotion but the new elements are recognising the structure, the strength, and with that the weakness of the communities we are connected to. Anna has completed many commissions of indoor and outdoor sculpture and is available for more.

He works in cast bronze and hand-crafted ceramic, and has taught many classes and workshops on these mediums. I have been enthralled in the act of creation for many years now . . . [My bronze sculptures] have a textural quality that is so much a part of working with cast metals, and they show the physicality that is required to produce a finished work . . . they challenge the viewer to look, contemplate, and bring their own aesthetic sense of form and texture to the work. Bill’s earlier weird and wonderful bronze sculptures featured chevron shapes in many forms, interactive wall pieces with travelling marbles, and alien or underwater imaginary creatures with spines and pods. Today, his New Zealand contemporary art vessels and wall plaques depict NZ sea- and landscapes with diving gannets, soaring tui, and swimming hammerhead sharks. His large bronze tabletop art ocean scenes with historic sailing ships and waka have appeared in exhibitions and prompted several commissions. Some of Bill’s commissions include: a giant “Pelagic Chevron” public sculpture at the corner of Tangihua Street and Quay Street in Auckland City; a large, bronze interpretation of Captain Cook’s sextant; a bronze entranceway for the Wairakia Golf Course; a copper and ceramic fountain for the entrance to the Lake House Art Centre; bronze plaques for the Sir Edmund Hillary Ice Axe memorabilia case; and a sculpture of renowned art benefactor Lady Becroft’s hands.
