She is a wood carver and a sculptor working with stone carving, steel, corten steel, and cast bronze (NZ). She does her own welding for her faceted steel artwork and outdoor garden sculptures (NZ). Originally from Taranaki, Anna is now based in Benin in Africa but returns regularly to create her New Zealand sculptures. Anna has a BFA in sculpture from the University of Canterbury. In her modern sculptures, she works with themes of the female form in relation to strength and fragility, balance, identity, and symmetry. Her more abstract and minimalised forms conceal complex ideas about feminine roles and the projection of the inner self through the outer form. Anna’s works are autobiographical, using the female figure to communicate her experiences. Of her 2023 exhibition, she said: This exhibition explores the two sides of my reality from the static works portraying myself in the present form conjuring hard, but delicate lines to the light hearted, tender works which refer to memories and dream states produced from a distortion of reality and transient, personal thoughts that revisit the playful mischief and mystery of childhood. Anna is a regular participant in sculpture symposia and sculpture park exhibitions both locally and abroad. Anna has participated in (and won prizes in) international symposia in Qatar, Montenegro, Cyprus, Australia, Denmark, Romania, Albania, Macedonia, Egypt, Turkey, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Korea, and Costa Rica, among others. Many of her symposium pieces have been installed as public art sculptures following the event. In New Zealand, Anna was awarded first prize for her work at sculpture symposia in Rotorua (2014), Whangarei (2012), and the Coromandel (2008). She has been exhibited on multiple occasions at Sculpture Onshore (Devonport), Sculpture on the Peninsula (Banks Peninsula), Art in a Garden (Canterbury), and Shapeshifter at the Dowse (Lower Hutt). She has twice been a finalist in the prestigious Wallace Art Awards (2016 and 2018). Anna was a trustee on the board of Eco Artists New Zealand, a charitable trust that uses funds from the sales of art to help environmental projects, specifically focusing on native New Zealand species and their ecosystems. On her views about the relationship between humans and environments, Anna said: …the figure represents myself in varying states of tension and emotion but the new elements are recognising the structure, the strength, and with that the weakness of the communities we are connected to. Anna has completed many commissions of indoor and outdoor sculpture and is available for more.

Alysn Midgelow-Marsden is a contemporary fine artist from Auckland with a northern European heritage. Her sculptures (tabletop and wall-mounted) are intricate mixed-media combinations of textiles, metal or found plastics, gilding, canvas, gesso, verdigris, and stitching. Alysn’s work is inspired by her curiosity with the human psyche. She is driven by her background in science, her continuing interest in the natural environment, and her attention to the social stereotypes associated with textiles and stitching. She combines her environmental interests with a fascination for the traditions of different cultures and times, finding connections in shared human experience. My practice delivers an invitation to create pleasurably intimate connections to personal experiences through subconscious, visceral, and emotive interactions. Marked visually by a complex, lyrical fluidity, the sculptural works articulate connections, responses, fragility, and strength. Alysn’s complex mixed media textile art presents forms and figures whose meaning are largely open to the viewer’s interpretation. Themes emerge slowly in her gentle yet obsessive mazes of stitching or crochet as she exploits the boundaries of the surfaces and creates subtle combinations of colour and material. Alysn has received awards for her work at national and international exhibitions, including the Mandurah Wearable Art show in Australia (for a work entitled ‘What Lies Beneath’); the Wall Brooches II exhibition in Australia (for ‘Taniwha’); and Nelson’s Changing Threads show in New Zealand (for “The Spaces Between VII”).

Find NZ art, abstract art NZ, and affordable original art at Art by the Sea Gallery. More > 2020 Price $1,680.00 Figures from the Anthro Scene Price $1,850.00 Figuring the Multiverse Price $1,850.00 Bio Catherine Manchester is a mid-career abstract and figurative artist from Wellington, New Zealand. She holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Diploma of Fine Arts. Her paintings often have elements of the sea; she thinks of them as “landscapes of the mind.” Her current and ongoing body of abstract art (NZ) is inspired by a wild and windy Wellington night when her TV began producing pixelated images. The wild distortions of the images and changing bands of colour were my weird gift from the wind to the wire. I ran to get my cell phone and captured some of the fast changing images. I printed them off and for the next year or so I stayed with them, imagining how I would paint them. Catherine grew up in a coastal settlement of Eastbourne in Lower Hutt. Her early memories are of beaches in Auckland. As a teenager, she wrote her hopes and dreams into poems. When she was 19, the death of a friend plunged her into sorrow and her work is often about working her way towards the light and giving a permanence to those early dreams of love. I am interested in where we come from and the places we love and inhabit. When I turned 65, I wanted to know about my ancestors so I sent off a DNA sample and was surprised and delighted to find I was 51 percent Celtic and 41 percent Scandinavian, and with Italian, Spanish, and Greek for the rest. My ancestors lived by the sea in Cornwall, and some came from Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The Scandinavians are seafaring people. One of my early dreams was ancient artefacts being washed up on Days Bay beach. They looked Roman! Catherine is a writer and poet, as well as an artist. She spent 15 months in Auckland in Laingholm, a seaside settlement near Titirangi. It was a perfect place to paint, work on films and to start a novel in between covid lockdowns. Catherine has work in both private and public collections throughout New Zealand. Public collections include the Christchurch Law Society and Timaru's Aigantighe Art Gallery. In 2025, one of her works was published in The Orion Powerhouse Gallery Akaroa: A Half Century of the Arts by Marie Connolly. She was a finalist in the 2006 Adam Portraiture Award, the Greater Wellington regional art award in 2018, and the Whirinaki Whare Taonga Wellington Arts Review.

He paints intuitively, rarely using preparatory sketches but instead allowing the work to take shape organically. A key focus for Carl is achieving balance in line, tone, colour, and overall composition. The incredibly precise lines and 3-dimensional shapes in Carl’s abstract fine art comes from his industry background in sign writing with a specialty in pin-striping for Hot Rods—a trade he learnt from his father. His artistic influences include cubists and impressionists such as Vincent Van Gogh, Wes Freed, Wifredo Lam, and Jean Michel Basquiat. Carl’s passion is the outdoors and interpreting the many varied people and experiences that colour his life. Some of his landscape scenes and NZ beach art have been painted en plein air in and around the west coast beaches of Auckland. Each of Carl’s geometric modern art paintings is meticulously and painstakingly hand-painted and then sealed with a final protective varnish. Symbols and intersecting planes suggest a way into deciphering his paintings, but the real beauty lies in discovering something new every time you look them.

Her landscapes, skyscapes, and urban scenes capture passing moments that have struck her while out travelling or hiking—a small red barn in a hay field, a complex cloud formation, bright red tomatoes spilling out of a wooden crate, a perfectly still and reflective lake. Landscapes have continually changing aspects and I enjoy working with the fluid motion this engenders. The sky plays an important role in the landscapes I paint, its vastness and expressiveness is a constant source of inspiration. Holly began painting at an early age and attended several years of portrait painting workshops and untutored still life painting sessions. She works mainly in strongly pigmented oils, enjoying the depth of colour, vibrancy, and texture offered by this medium. Her work has been further enhanced by attending courses at an Atelier in Edinburgh where she refined her skills in classical and traditional realistic oil painting and returned to New Zealand with a stunning selection of paintings of Europe. My main inspirations for painting are light, colour and atmosphere. I aim to use these elements as a means of creating an integral connection with the subject. Growing up in New Zealand surrounded by natural beauty, has inspired in Holly a passion for expressing sky and light on the canvas. The sky takes on a special significance and its vast and ever-changing nature is an inspiring subject matter for Holly’s work. New Zealand landscapes continue to influence her alongside the Scottish and European historical architecture and scenery that has brought to light new creative possibilities. Whether the moody atmosphere of a misty sound, or a Parisian windowsill with fluttering gauze curtain, Holly’s paintings open a door into a different time and place, one that may speak to us in its familiarity, or offer an imaginative escape.

Her broad skill base of glass art (NZ) includes (but is not limited to) cast glass, kilnforming, glass slumping, and flameworking or lampworking. She’s particularly known for her incredible glass sculptures inspired by her time travelling across Africa. Jo’s background includes equal parts science and the arts with glasswork offering a happy marriage of both. She has two apprenticeships in Medical Laboratory Technology, gained during the mid-80s, and believes a seed of interest in glasswork was apparent even back then. I got to play with test tubes, petri dishes, glass slides and pipettes—measuring and mixing liquids and chemicals, and spending a lot of time looking down a microscope! Jo also holds a degree in English and Linguistics and certificates in English language teaching and graphic design. She traces her passion for glass artistry to a mosaic conference in Hobart, Tasmania. There, she saw a presentation by a sculptor who made life-sized birds with kilnformed glass feathers. She was “fascinated and hooked” by the intricacy of the birds, each with a wingspan of 5 metres. Jo now makes her own glass birds (NZ), with intricate carved patterning. Glass encompasses my love of science and art—it is the junction where both loves meet! Jo has completed numerous master classes in kilnforming and flameworking, learning from both local and international glass artists. Her incredible Naisiae (pronounced “nay-zee) sculpture is a life-size glass representation of a shuka (type of sarong) worn by Maasai women on the East Coast of Africa. This piece would be an outstanding showpiece in any art glass collection.
