Bio

Rustic Twist is an art business specialising in life-size metal animals made from 100% New Zealand steel and recycled materials. These outdoor or garden sculptures are sturdy and highly unique, each piece individually hand-crafted and made to age well in the elements.

What began as a hobby turned into a business in the year 2000 when the artists were asked to make a life-size pregnant cow out of corrugated iron. This sculpture launched the business and “Rustic Twist” evolved out of that. While the lambs, sheep, and angora goats are the most popular, Art by the Sea has also hosted several life-size metal lamas, wild boars, the occasional peacock, and a giant cactus. We have also transported a life-size Friesian cow to Southland, and hosted a one-off flock of sheep art installation piece for the Milford Centre Sculpture Trail (2020) in support of the Key to Life Trust.

All of Rustic Twist animals are made from recycled metal on a steel frame. The large animals, like the sheep and goats, are handmade from corrugated iron roofing. Some of the smaller bird sculptures are made using repurposed sawblades or pieces cut out of old copper hot water cylinders and then assembled by hand.

All sculptures are made to order, so please contact us at least three weeks in advance of the date the artwork is required. We regularly arrange international shipping for these pieces; please contact us for a quote.
