Sean Crawford
New Zealand Sculptor in Steel and Metal

Sean Crawford NZ contemporary sculptor

Sean Crawford lives on a two acre block on the edge of Carterton in the Waiarapa, New Zealand. From his purpose built studio/workshop Sean creates sculptural works under inspirational views of the Tararua ranges. Sean's creative development took him from the plumbing trade in the suburban New Zealand landscape to experiencing wide European vistas during his OE. This awakened his desire and flair for art and design. Returning home to New Zealand Sean put aside his trade and, at the age
of 30, he made the decision to pursue years of study, gaining a Bachelor of Design with Honours.
"I believe that the off-setting of old and new technology, processes and materials provide the challenge to extend boundaries - boundaries which
I will continue to explore in further exhibitions and commissioned works."

Sean employs distinctive materials such as galvanised or stanless steel, native timbers and copper resulting in a unique style.
Sean has partcipated in numerous group and solo exhibitions and his works are held in New Zealand and overseas collections.

"It is not the object that defines us - it merely implicates us."

'Waiting for Hammond' 3.3m tall by 1.1m wide
Panel steel ( laser cut feather design ), Stainless steel
sub frame and plate steel - Powder coated

This work takes the painting Waiting for Buller by
Bill Hammond as a starting point -
the idea was to develop a Hui bird abstract into the
form of Demi God or Guardian, this is counter point to
the reading of the painting - with bird figures awaiting
their collective fate.
I see this work providing a spiritual link from the
man-made world to the the natural world.
As in from architecture to landscape - giving place a sense of other world-ness.

'Ewe and the Bomb"
'You and the Atomic Bomb' by George Orwell 1945.

Dimensions - length 2M, 0.8M wide, 1.2 M high.
Materials - Steel frame and Laser cut missiles - Galvanized
( Hot Dipped ) and Powder coated Artic White.
Suitable for exterior placement.

This work encompasses the romantic ideals of isolation as a solution
to a global threat. The sheep grazing icon of serene New Zealand,
the missiles hark back to cold war fear.
The point that an action could happen quickly and that geographic
isolation would only be a monentary buffer.

"Fortified"

Dimensions - length 6M, 0.5M wide, 1.2 M high.
Materials - Steel frame and Laser cut AK47s and Armilite Weapons, steel chain and stands

Fortified continues a body of work that engages the component rebuild/reworking of an object. Through a shift in module (cell) the meaning of the overall form is altered, creating new associations that the viewer can draw upon. This work touches on a number of ideas, one being the accessibility of private space. Using the Pit Bull as the defensive mechanism the view is challenged to approach the area it occupies. It is through this close exploration that the work reveals.
As humans will distil many qualities of our own onto animals - the ability to be protector and to act aggressively as we define our space. Sometimes it is the nature of the animal that is questioned and not the nature of humanity, which through manmade devices (strength of arms) we venture offensively to take our neighbours (or distant) lands.
