"I was born in Auckland, New Zealand in 1940. At age 6, I moved with my parents to live in Wellington. When I turned 15, I left my art course at Wellington Technical College to join J.Inglis Wright Advertising Agency as a "Junior Executive" - in other words, "office boy". The studio artists were very helpful about my insistance that "I wanted to be an artist", and it was ageed that if I attended art classes at night school and regularly submit the results, there was a chance "I might get through the studio door!" Night school was great and here I met Judi, my wife to be, who was also studying drawing and lettering. These valuable new skills took me to a number of Wellington art studios where I was employed as a visualiser/artist and eventually invited to join an established freelance art group. Judi and I married in 1962, leaving Wellington in 1967 to work with well known advertising company, J. Ilott Ltd as Art Director, and to live on Auckland's North Shore. I continued to work in a variety of studios and later, with Judi, we built up our own well-known graphic design company which kept us very busy for the next 23 years. Later we sold the company and I had an important wish granted - to paint in watercolour for pleasure - this all came true when I had the great opportunity of being tutored by Ted Sherwen - surely one of New Zealand's top watercolor painters! I have exhibited at various events and galleries in the Auckland area and set myself a goal to paint high quality work that has humour, unexpected detail, beautiful colours and a sensitivity that I believe invites a longer, more rewarding viewing experience. As for my style, it is best described as "slightly contemporary - off the wall and unpredictable" - and it really will change regularly - so watch this space! I happily acknowlege all the characters who have inspired me to use the wonderful medium of watercolour, including Cezzane, Juan Gris, Modiglianni, and more recently, Brandt, Post and Sherwen." |
