Artist Statement
I paint because of the challenges it puts before you. Starting with an idea and seeing that through to its conclusion
I find both hard work and incredibly rewarding. For a work to be successful it has to adhere to a certain visual language. For me that
consists of working with the principles I call the three C's. Colour, Composition and Cezanne. The latter having been the biggest influence on my work.
I concentrate most of my work on subject matter of interest to me, from the exploration of space to Temuka pottery. What's vital is how the visual dynamic plays out. Capturing the viewers attention and holding it, that is the challenge set before me as the painter.
I don't believe the work needs excessive amounts of external dialogue for the conclusion in the viewers eyes to be valid. I am more interested in creating a visual dialogue between me as the painter and the viewer as the final destination.

This painting deals with an idea that's been brewing in my head for a long time. As a carpenter I use saw-horses everyday. I became interested in the idea of re-inventing them, to re-animate them back to their original form. This work is about the saw-horse's world, an unknown world to us, a place occupied by him and his kind. The apple blossom signs itself to spring, a time of renewal, freshness and re-birth. The ball at his feet acts as a companion and plaything and adds to the sense of wonder I wanted from the work. Colours represent an off-world Mars like feel with danger at every corner. A place with pyraclastic clouds of poison and sharp grass - somewhere we do not belong.

This work is made up of symbolic images. The stage is an image i've used before. I like the idea of a made up situation. People look towards stages expecting to see some form of act take place - this adds to the effect of the non-real. The sheep stands in for people or whatever you want, a startled
creature caught in some sort of outside influence. Drawn directly on a piece I wanted a flat, cut and paste feel to its form - stuck on therefore easily taken off. The breed is Drysdale used extensively for its coarse long fibre for carpets. The landscape is another "icon" in this country, said to belong to people. I wanted to comment on the way land holds people, captures their attention so I used a stained glass effect in the colours and treatement
of the hills. Creates a sense of light emulating from within the work whcih in turn creates a sense of Karma.
