Penny Smith Printmaker

Dunedin artist
Penny Smith was born in Hastings and studied at the Otago Polytechnic
School of Art graduating in 1997 with a BFA. Her work is informed by
her deep love of the environment and by the landscapes she encounters
in her walks in and around the tracks of the South Island. She works
as a full-time artist from her home studio and has been exhibiting in
Dunedin and nationally since the early 1990's. She combines the disciplines
of painting and printmaking to produce compositional narratives, using
images of displaced clarity and shifting perspective.
I hope to convey, through my art works, a tranquil, restful quality and a sense of stillness, contemplation and peace. I find that time has a way of becoming the master of my days, and in a world which seems to be running faster and faster, it has become important to find a haven where I am able to stop and reflect on my place within the cycles of time and space. I have a great love and respect for the land and its bounty of precious metals and plant life. I enjoy working with different media such as silk, cotton, canvas, stitching, copper wire, hand made silk paper, hand made flax paper, printing, painting, dyes, and inks - to pull together a cohesive image. |
