CERAMIC SCULPTRESS

I am largely self taught, and have been sculpting for 20 years. I have several styles. I make small delicate figurines in white clay, high fired and painted, glazed and sometimes gilded or lustred. These may be cute dressed animals, fancy clowns, realistic animals, people, fairies, pixies, dragons.

My most prolific style is large stoneware hollow animals, especially native birds, e.g. takahes, pukekos, tuis, wood pigeons and large cats, dogs and boars. These are press moulded and then hand finished. Garden sculptures, goblins and gargoyles are done mostly freeform. All these are stained, glazed and high fired to render them weatherproof. One of my dogs is in the Auckland Museum Contemporary Ceramic section. I have won numerous awards and participated in mainly group exhibitions over the years. I have completed three large public sculptures; a couch and chess table in Onehunga Mainstreet, and a Dragon Seat in Ngataringa Reserve, Devonport. These are ferro-cement sculptures with hand made tiles cemented in place. Many of the picture tiles are made in relief and hand painted and glazed.

On Tuesday nights I teach ceramic sculpture at Waitakere College. I am also a woodcarver, specialising in small figurines, hand carved signs, chip carving and English Traditional. This is more for pleasure than profit. I have taught nightclasses for 12 years. I have been a member of Auckland Studio Potters, Titirangi Community Arts Council and Waitakere Central Community Arts Council where I am Past President and have been an active Committee member for many years.

I live with my husband, motley flock of hens and small terrier ( inspiration for my fierce dogs) up in the bush end of the Henderson Valley where we are visited by tuis, wood pigeons and numerous mallard ducks.
