Bino is a self taught artist who has been brought up and surrounded by carvings, paintings, singing and sports at his Marae in Porirua, Wellington. Bino is of Ngati Toa Rangatira, Ngati Raukawa, Te Ati Awa desent. Tainui being his waka. Unfortunately Te Reo was not taught in his earlier days and now he is currently studying the Maori language at Tertiary level in between carving. Bino's inspiration comes from his culture and the language. Papatuanuku... Mother Earth, Te Moana.. the sea and nature. "Being brought up by the bush and sea and being taught to hunt and utilise the bush, to dive, fish, collect sea food, surf and respect Tangaroa (God of the Sea) is in just about every aspect of my life." Bino feels truly humbled to have been involved as a designer on such epic New Zealand made films such as The Lord of the Rings, King Kong, The Last Samurai and Half of the Lion , the Witch and the Wardrobe. His materials are surfboards (polyurethane).. Oamaru stone (limestone)... Bone (beef and whale bone).. Paint (both spray and hand painted).. Airbrushing and Wood (carved waka paddles, etc) Bino has a few different approaches to each medium, but the one thing they have in common is the... Shape..Ahua... Symmetry.. Auaha... Detail... Mokamoka and Balance.. Toenga. "Thats the most important component to all my visions and thoughts. Weather its visualising what to create inside a set shape and its limited space e.g the surfboards... or creating a shape out of a block of stone.. my sculptures and bone carvings."
